Great player and Greater player

Could someone please explain what these terms mean, I see them used a lot in the community but I can't find any source that clearly states what it means. It seems to be some sort of achievement system special to the forum users

great = all species
greater = all backgrounds

good - 10 wins
great - all species won
greater - all species AND backgrounds won (checquers is wrong, or at the very least, ambiguous)
greaterFOO - all backgrounds as race FOO or all races as background FOO won
greaterest - all available background/race combinations won, as well as one race/background combo unavailable in a stable release

the only other such achievement i know is "tiamat", for winning a draconian of every colour.

Are there any accounts other than comborobin with this?

yeah a shitload of accounts have goodplayer. me, for instance.

greaterest player i have no fucking clue, but i looked at a lot of "the usual suspects" for greaterest player, and none of them had it. there's probably an irc query you can use to find out though, but i wouldn't know what it would be. tbf i think CR might not even have greaterestplayer, because of that second requirement.

Another widely recognised achievement would be polytheist, for winning a game with every god.

You don't have to look at a lot of "the usual suspects", just this page:
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/scoring/best- ... score.html

And of course, nobody is even close. There are 640 or so combos, and there are only 2 accounts that have more than 50% of that. (And both stopped playing year ago.)

a free variable; replace it with a background or a race of your choice. e.g., greaterhuman is someone who has won every background with a human.

Well, except for Comborobin, which has every current availible background won. Someone would just have to dig up a branch on a server and win Dj/LO to clinch it.

The CR project is already done. Dj and LO never got into any stable version, so they count even less then, say, grey elf or ogre mage (and those don't count either).

You can win all races and backgrounds etc. offline, but then lack of verifiability will deny you the adulation you crave. Driven to despair you will end your life, dishevelled, urine soaked and alone, at 3am in the car park of a cut price eatery. When they find your body they'll say "It was only a matter of time".

Probably.

I won all species... offline. There wasn't even a banner that popped up! Worse yet, the PC I did that on was wiped out since then, meaning the only record of my incredible achievement is in my own memory!

Let this be a lesson to you. Play online, or have your mighty achievements fade into the oblivion of your own faulty memory, to be believed by none.

I've been playing online since... but what are the chances there will be another double damage bug so I can win felid again?

decentplayer - have at least 10 oneandwon games (oneandwon = play combo for the first time and win).

CR would need to win something like Dj, LO, GrDK, or XXJr to get greaterestplayer. This is independent of the goals of the CR account.

I am currently working on great player, starts off easy but gets much harder as you progress.

Wouldn't all backgrounds with MI be fairly easy, start off as MIWZ and switch as soon as you find a fighter type god.

These are not real titles, only inside jokes of the IRC crawl community (which is a pretty small group of old players).

I don't know what you mean by not "real" titles, they're not 100% official challenges but as far as things to try and achieve in crawl they're pretty good.

Doing a greatrace takes much longer than you'd think. Even at one win a day, you're looking at almost four full weeks of winning daily.

They're not official, no, but they're not really any more arbitrary than any other achievement.

Does the Wz part add anything there, or is it above average because Mi is Mi and you're allowed to drop your spellbook on turn 1 to go worship trog/oka.

It's not. You mainly just have to reset fights more often, rest more often (and in less convenient places), and escape the abyss more often. And occasionally he just kills you and you have to start again.

One thing you learn when doing a greatrace is that backgrounds are meaningless after the first 10 minutes. Backgrounds are a starting kit, not a class or a job. There is no "intended" build for any background, and you have absolutely no obligation to stick with your starting kit.

This is especially true if you're trying to win. You are better served following the whims of the floorgod and the racial constraints/aptitudes.

This is all true. But personally I enjoy Crawl more when I 'roleplay' the backgrounds to some extent. To me, background determines what skills I train and how (of course, found items affect this). Example: My monks put 50% of exp into UC until UC is maxed. This is very far from optimal play, but I find it fun.

If you're going to be doing a greatrace, I recommend whatever maximizes your enjoyment of playing, even if it's suboptimal. It really would be a lot of hours of crawl.
