you're a deep dwarf, just spam heal wounds (possibly hasted) if you're in actual danger

Well, he's berserking, so both teleport/blink and healing are off the table.

Job 1 is to get out of the net.
Job 2 is to decide whether to keep fighting or run. If you flee, you can use a potion of haste when berserk runs out. You seem to not be standing in flames at the moment, so I'd say fight. If you are standing in flames, you need to decide whether to step out or keep fighting.

Job 3 is to switch to the battleaxe and dump the war axe (after this fight or even this fight after berserk wears off).

Heh, I was more worried about the forest fire than I should have been.

So I've dropped the buckler and am now using the +1 war axe. Should I continue using Maxwell's? It seems really, really strong.

Edit: Acquirement scroll! What to acquire? I'm leaning on weapon.

Geez, it looks like you put way too much into dodging for the kind of armor you were wearing. If your dodging and armour aptitudes were swapped, that might've been a lot better. AFAIK Dodging is almost completely useless for someone wearing very heavy armor, as its increase to EV is multiplicative, IIRC.

You generally want to train dodging even on guys in heavy armor. You should train armor first though.

On this character you got bad returns on investment for dodging, but that's not because you have plate armor on; it is because you have 8 dexterity. (You didn't raise dex on level up and you have clumsy 2. Presumably due to quaffing !mutation...?)

With very low dexterity you get bad returns on EV from dodging. With very low total base AC, you get bad returns on bonus AC from armor skill. Very low strength relative to encumbrance rating will also hurt EV a lot but you don't generally have to worry about that on any berserker.

Berserkers should raise dexterity every third level, pretty much always. Berserkers should always train dodging eventually, it is just a question of when.

Please do not believe and/or spread the idea that dodging is useless for guys in heavy armor, you will end up with worse defenses in mid- and late game. Seriously, look through the YAVP forum, you will see plenty of characters in the heaviest armor (GDA, CPA) getting a lot out of dodging!
