Draconian ghosts are using hax. Ban from game plz.

Now we have breath weapons that unexhaust in 10 turns. Fucking great, I just died because I assumed, apparently wrongly, that it would take longer for ghosts to recharge their breath weapon compared to player draconians. This is so dumb.

Anything else dumb about ghosts to add to the list? How about the fact that they don't generate asleep?

I hate ghosts so much and I will continue to bitch about them continuously on all of these forums until something is done about them.

Generally speaking most of my bitching will consist of reasons why ghosts are either badly designed or stupid OP and should be removed from the game, such as the lack of generating asleep and ridiculous defensive stats overwhelming the player. Dunno what your qualifications are banning.

dpeg, draconian ghosts are busted, everyone knows this. You guys are volunteers doing this for free in your spare time, so of course I'm not going to demand you fix anything. Just please don't pretend they are OK.

I've seen quite a few proposals to change ghosts, in an attempt to keep the fun, but at the same time reduce some of the problems.

In my view the discussion isn't aided by portraying player ghosts as a binary issue. There are many more reasonable positions than 'remove player ghosts' and 'don't touch player ghosts'.

For example, my personal gripe is that player ghosts can have extremely high defences in comparison to other monsters encountered on a given level. I have never been killed by a ghost with a dangerous spell set, but I could also see that being a problem in some cases. Both these issues can be addressed without removing player ghosts, simply by scaling the ghost's properties to be appropriate to the spawn location.

I agree that Draconion ghost breathe should be fixed, altgough on the wider discussion of ghosts in general, I would support their being reworked to address what seems to be common grievances against them.

I am also pretty ok with player ghosts. but draconian ghosts...? nah man. get rid of the breath weapon(all other undead dragons lose breath weapons, and all other abilities, natural or god given, are lost upon becoming ghost), or at least don't change the player's breath type/breath damage on becoming ghost(no other kind of damage players do is switched to draining type upon death-bolt of fire spell doesn't become bolt of draining, so why does bolt of fire breath become draining?), or at the very, very least, reduce the damage please

You should probably be able to set both whether you generate or encounter player ghosts as an option

Ghosts are pretty simple to deal with - just use each staircase down to explore a decent chunk of the level, and then once you've explored most of the level around the ghost, just move on and come back later to deal with it, much like you would with any powerful unique. That's why player ghosts are the only enemies in the game that can't follow you through staircases, to make that a possibility. Remember, you don't have to fight everything.

I do, however, agree that draconian ghosts are a bit much - running into something that can spam bolt of draining at you is a huge pain, and is way too strong with an early ghost - just getting hit by one or two of those at DL:5 or so gives a really crippling amount of drain.

I would suggest, to the makers of Crawl, that they give draconian player ghosts upgrading breath level based on how strong they were when they died - maybe step it up with Pain "breath" at level 1 (Not exactly a traditional "breath" weapon, but hey, neither is yellow, purple, or mottled), upgrading to a small cloud of miasma, and then maybe ghostly fire, and then finally draining. Or something like that, I'm not amazing at judging this stuff.

(Not to mention that draconian ghosts tend to be insanely hard to deal with just because of their relatively high AC, EV and HP for the early game).

I don't see why they don't keep their normal breath, why should abilities change when spells don't change, unneeded flavour.
