SpEn mid/late game problems

Hi,

As the title suggests I'm having trouble with how I should approach the mid/late game with my Spriggans. Starting with stabbing and some hexes is very reliable, but I'm having trouble in progressing past the stab-plan. I have let many Sp down that has taken 1 or 2 runes but then start having trouble to keep up with many of the later threats (I'm aiming for 3 runes, so late is Depths, Zot and V5). I find the HP, low AC and hunger-constrained trains to be very limiting and making it hard to create a well rounded character.

I currently have one alive and kicking with 2 runes that I'd love to have some feedback on, primarily on how I should build/have built differently to not be a total blank against golden dragons and titans. Some visits to V5 was fruitless and costly. Any advice on this race that I find way more difficult than the stories I read about here on the Tavern seem to indicate is very welcome.

Vaults 5 is much harder than both Slime Pits 6 and Abyss 3 for the character, get one of those runes instead. For TRJ you can quaff a potion of brilliance and cast Tornado. You can skip all Zot if you like, should be easy with Haste and Ash though I would probably stab all those draconians for XP.

Vaults:5 isn't more dangerous than abyss rune for a spen of ash, what is wrong with this forum. it's a predictable level that doesn't randomly screw your terrain, doesn't generate new monsters faster than you can kill them, and doesn't have executioners

slime is a reasonable choice though

I guess you haven't checked the character before replying. It has 12% tornado and is incredibly stealthy. Abyss is very easy for Sp of Ash even without Haste/stealth because you can run from almost anything and can detect portals. Vaults 5 is the worst level for Sp because it has all stairs in one space and reduces usefulness of speed due to monsters everywhere.

Yes, Spriggan + Deflect Missiles + Tornado makes for a rather easy TRJ fight. Assuming, of course, you know how to dance with the winds to do high damage while staying out of melee. (go counterclockwise around things, usually)

Um, you're missing the point. It's not about Air Magic, it's about a lvl 9 spell in a 3-rune game. And the OP wonders why he/she has trouble towards the end of the game.... Well it's because they sunk all of their skill points into Tornado.

Let that be a lesson; if you're building an air mage, keep a sharp eye out for some tool that lets you kill a titan.

It might not work with your char for 3 runes anymore since you have 0 skill in translocation/summoning but this was the approach I used for 15 runes with a SpEn (+Orb of Destruction).
I would add the low-level translocation spells like Blink or Passage of Golubria. With your high spellcasting you have hardly anything to invest into Translocation for that.
Since you already invested that much into air: silence will shut down any lich/ancient lich (if you consider them to be a threat)...but prevent you from casting, too. It might still be useful against them. You have wands of teleport if you need to get out of a situation where you are silenced (potions of canc. could be used to end silence if you are the soruce).

It looks a bit strange to see a SpEn getting converted to an AE.
Your direct attacking spells are loud and Tornado is getting much stronger if you are close to enemies and stay exposed to as many of them as possible which is the opposite of what a SpEn is good at. Translocations will help here as cheap ways to get out of situations created by using these spells.

Thanks for all the input. For specifics, what would be a better weapon? I'm assuming I should keep the shield, and from what I can recall the quick blades are pretty rare. Short blades does seem rather unexiting outsite of stabbing from my experience.

Also, seems like some of you don't like the choice of a lvl 9 spell. The lightning-balls have been pretty effective in the mid game and still is in some cases, so I thought pushing to Tornado would be defendable (given that it is single school). It does however not really play well with the playstyle I'm currently applying, which is more stealth-oriented. How do you suggest I relocate my skills (I do worship Ash after all)? Have yet to find OoD, which would have been really nice in this situation.

Silence for titan, interesting. Thanks for that idea.

One last comment on the lvl 9 spell and then I'll shut up. :)

There is a surprisingly huge gap between lvl 7 and lvl 8-9. Especially lvl 9. So while getting Ball Lightning going wasn't too expensive, getting Tornado online needs a whole different order of magnitude of skill points.

As for what weapon, ctr-f for what good weapons are around. You're worshipping Ash, so you can redirect extra levels in Air magic or Short Blades into the new weapon school. If you can find a good long blade, don't redirect the short blades skill points as you get more out of the crosstraining than you would if you transferred the skill. (right? someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.)

I am not sure what the character would get instead of Tornado. Tornado is the best level 9 spell, especially for Sp who cannot spam level 9 spells because of hunger. The character has everything it needs (Fighting, Weapon, Dodging, Stealth, Haste, several other level 6 spells from different schools like Freezing Cloud, Invisibility/Mass Confusion, Deflect Missiles, Conjure Ball Lightning) so I believe going for Tornado was optimal in this case. I would probably also work for Necromutation next if I was going for extended.

Um, what about an actual weapon? That can kill things? Even in corridors? Like you said, Sp can't spam Tornado, so how's it going to kill things with MR and rElec? What will Tornado kill that the other spells won't?

Spriggan does not need to kill everything it meets. I am still shocked after spectating Yermak's last game in the 0.18 tournament.

Edit. Tornado kills everything, even MR immune monsters with rElec. Only a few monsters are immune to it.

Monsters made of air (air elementals, ball lightning, and twisters) are immune to this spell

As a final note, what would be a good weapon? I think there is at least one demon whip available (brand unknown, cannot look it up right now). If I had the option, should I take a double sword/lajatang and drop the shield?

The demon whip is perfect.

I also think that the elec rapier is very good against dudes who don't resist electricity. The venom one, however, is trashy at this point.

Given that you've invested a lot in Air, the Staff of Air would do excellent damage against things that don't resist electric.

+1 for staff of air, normal weapons will do too little damage with Str 4 and no slaying.

Edit. Though as far as I remember staff of air is 2h for Sp.

Demon whip or demon blade (1-h, right? If not, put in 2nd choice group) would be my first choice. Staff of air, lajatang, demon trident (2-h, right?), maybe broad axe, etc are my 2nd group.

Rapier of electrocution is strong. Push Sblades to 14 for best use.

Quick blades are common from acquirement for Sblades users. They aren't that strong for the late game without a ton of slaying or source of stabs (summons, Gozag, etc), so I wouldn't bother at the point. Pain, distortion, or electrocution change that a bit (but many nastiest resist pain and electricity) and these are very rare without Kiku, Lugonu, Okawaru, or Trog. Acquired quick blades are always (I think, or at least almost always) unbranded. (They can be randarts, though...) Summary: I wouldn't bother trying acquirement for a quick blade at this point.

SpEn does better with summons or necromancy to create allies in the endgame than with level 9 direct damage spells. (This is true of nearly any character, since summons and necro deliver so much value for so little xp investment.) Good spells to go for would include mana viper, shadow creatures, simulacrum, and death channel. You could get all of those online very quickly with this character, though not all would be needed. Regarding tornado specificallly, if you really want to cast some higher level spells, which is absolutely not necessary, some better candidates would be borgnjor's revivification, death's door, controlled blink, and malign gateway. These are all considerably cheaper xp-wise. On the other hand, as an Ash character, using xp inefficiently is not always a big problem. Frankly, the excessive investment in air is wasteful enough that the redirect suggested up thread might actually be warranted. Don't think I've ever said that about an Ash character before.

More worrying is your equipment. Your weapon is bad. If you don't want to stab anymore, the demon whip suggestion is good. It is easy to get to mindelay and it's good damage for a spriggan. Your ac is unnecessarily low and your ring of magic resistance probably doesn't even do anything. I suggest that you find a buckler of protection and fully enchant it. There's probably one on the ground somewhere already. You can offset the loss of rc with a replacement for the ring of magic resistance. I suggest rethinking your magic skills so that wizardry isn't needed and switching to a ring that provides some ac. I doubt the robe is the best you can do. You should check out ego robes laying around if you haven't already. A robe of resistance would be clearly better. You can probably get away without relec and 2 more ac is a lot when your ac is 7.

Not excessive if you want to play a heavy air mage. Having Tornado ready for the third rune with the help of consumables is not at all unreasonable if you want to focus on it, and SpEn is a good start to do so.

the demon whip suggestion is good. It is easy to get to mindelay and it's good damage for a spriggan.

-3 aptitude hurts. Getting a whip to min delay is like a human getting a double sword to nearly mindelay, or a minotaur getting a broad axe to mindelay.

It's still a reasonable thing to do for late game, but it's very much not an easy thing to do.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about OOFs until you need to worry about them. The OP is a spriggan with 7 potions of haste, good stealth, access to Darkness, and like a billion tele charges, so really shouldn't need to fight Zot:5 anyhow.

The elec rapier will wreck most of the dudes in the game. Invis will help. Freezing Cloud will also wreck a surprising number of dudes.

I'd keep playing, using those tools to killdudes and using Ash's abilities and your speed to pick fights carefully. Manage noise. Tornado and CBL will attract friends. Remember you're outrageously squishy, so being in melee range with an ettin or juggernaut is not something you want to do.

I'd Amnesia Tornado so you aren't tempted to try and get it working, and learn Darkness. You can cast that and just spriggan-walk away from pretty much anything in the game. Learning something like Animate Dead or Skeleton if you have it will give cheap, good, allies, which help a surprising amount.

You are saying that we should not worry about orbs of fire and I agree, this is why demon whip is not needed at all. The character has many ways of killing monsters, including even orbs of fire if by some bug it will be generated in abyss or slime.
But then you are saying to amnesia tornado and I am lost, it is already castable with brilliance and it is the only answer for some monsters. If you want to learn darkness and need 2 spell slots, you can amnesia confuse or regeneration instead.

Fortunately, Spriggans have one of the best defenses against the rest of the level coming to play: be somewhere else after you're done killing the thing.

(and, to some extent, Tornado is already a defense against everything nearby coming to visit)

It's actually pretty easy to regenerate MP faster than you can possibly use it up with tornado alone.

Yeah, it doesn't do damage as fast per-turn but it does more damage total spread out over all those turns. It's very mana efficient(and only 1 spell school). Definitely my favorite level 9 spell, for a few reasons... dunking cerebov in the lava being chief among them.

Most things die to a single cast of tornado. Although it helps to know it does more damage to enemies near you and in an open area.

I'm not sure I've seen anything survive two full tornados -- I know that's enough to kill TRJ, even with relatively low spellpower.

As I wrote above SpEn has too much XP, what would you spend those points on? The character has everything it needs and even more.

It's nice to have a choice what to do. I prefer to have a way to kill anything if I can.

I'd probably train a bunch of fighting. Also evocations.

As my sig says, I'm not a very good player. But my feelings on Tornado are kind of:

* It's a lot of XP to get up without brilliance
* On a spriggan, you actually do care a little bit about food, so spamming it can be troublesome
* It's good at killing things, but it's best when you can spam it so it also kills the dudes who hear it and come see what's up
* Assuming the elemental evokers are laying around somewhere (and maybe a spider sack or two?) those and the wand of acid are pretty good answers to the things that don't die to freezing cloud and the rapier and you really would rather kill than walk away from.

The character has 19 Fighting at XL 23, that's enough for XL 27 Sp provided -2 aptitude and -3 HP penalty.
Evocations power does not scale good enough to make training Evo higher than 10-15 a good idea (unless you have rod of clouds/summoning) and I don't see any rods in inventory.

I'm amazed with the discussions, really interesting to see the arguments :)

I decided to try out as many of the suggestions as possible, since both summoning and necromancy are my least-comfort zone-schools by far. So I unlearned tornado and tried Mana vipers, haunt, death channel, silence, darkness. Haunt was really amazing for taking out strong mobs, and in combination with silence ancient liches were never dangerous at all. Since I still had never won a Sp I took it pretty chill, took a sweep and also got CBlink to 1% fail rate or something before snatching the orb. So yeah, Sp of Ash has a lot of XP to spare, given how sub optimal my training was. Anyway, escaped with 4 runes, super happy about it, thanks for all the advice!
