Scrolls of fog, how do they work?

So, I'll shamefully admit that since I've started playing crawl, I've never used a scroll of fog, but I THOUGHT I knew how they worked... here's what I pictured:

If a centaur or any kind of ranged attacker has LOS on you, it can attack you, but if you fog it up with a scroll, they wont be able to see you and will stop shooting at you, and stop casting spells ...

Every time I've tried to use a foggy scroll, this is EXACTLY what happens ... so, how the hell are these things supposed to work anyway?

Re: Scrolls of fog, how do they work?

You need two squares of fog to block LOS. That means that you'll have to read a scroll, then take a step away from whatever is shooting you, and then LOS will usually be blocked (until they get close again). So they won't ever really save you as a very last-second measure, but if you remember to use them a few turns before you're about to die they can help a huge amount against ranged attackers.

They work like magnets.

For a long time I never used them either, but now they're one of my favourite scrolls. Use them to escape, stop ranged attacks, break mesmerized, approach statues etc.

They also work as a poor man's see invisible. If any invisible creatures are in the fog, that tile of fog will look slightly different...
