Mummy Monk challenge

I have a few questions about the mummy monk challenge

No body armour allowed, but can you wear robes?
No bucklers allowed, but can you wear a shield?
No evocables allowed, but can you wear an evocable piece of kit (e.g. artifact non-body armour) but just not evoke it?
Has anybody actually done it?

Your last question is answered at the very bottom of the picture, i'd assume.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

Robes are haram, your body slot must be empty. Shields are allowed, I'm not even sure why bucklers are not, but regular shields (and large ones, I guess???) were decreed to be fine. You can wear, say, an item with Inv+ and it's fine if you never evoke it. Also Flight from boots is okay since it auto-activates when you put it off. Well, a bit of Flight might be okay anyway if you need, like, cross water or lava to get Abyssal rune.

3 people done it so far, as far as I know.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

Also, the challenge itself is more of a general guideline to make things as hard as possible, but it's not exactly set in stone. For instance, the image still says "0.16 only" (Or is it "0.15 only"? The red text is super-hard to read.), because Implo was playing the challenge in 0.17 and got fucked over by a bennu, but later he won it in trunk. The last winner used 0.18 versions. With shields, initially all shields were forbidden but later the restriction was lifted. VinnePaz accidentally worn a robe during the first couple of levels because he forgot to take it off - he's still the undisputed original winner.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

Wait, it seems to suggest you need to get the runes from shoals and snake; what do you do if you don't get those branches? Or do they just mean "the runes from Lair, Vaults, Tomb, and Abyss"?

It sounds terrible.

It sounds compelling.

Yes, it does mean that, though Implo also grabbed Tar rune because, why not?

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

OK - another question - can you have a buckler in your inventory, but not wear it (so you can train shields) ?

And if you manage to combine it with another challenge (e.g. DUPZ, DUHZ, greaterorbrun), do you get bonus points?

Yeah, I suppose so, though I'm not sure I'd train Shields without even finding one.

...I like the way you think!

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

OK - one more question. Can you put on self-evoking items, but not evoke them? I'm thinking of a ring of teleportation.

Edit: Holy sweet f**k this is a tough challenge, but I feel I'm learning a lot in the process. If you luck into some equipment early on, you just about stand a chance, but even then every last critter has to be lured well away from the black.

My strategy is UC->10, then fighting->10, then keep UC focussed with fighting, dodging and stealth selected.

I think that was discussed, but don't remember the outcome. Probably not? =Tele is really bad nowadays, anyway.

Can you throw stuff or is that a weapon?
To all new players: Ignore all strategy guides posted on the wiki, ask questions in the Advice forum, players with lots of posts normally have the best advice.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

Why the no body armor/God rule? Imho that's about the only thing making this much worse than normal, I think playing a MuMo would be interesting, but no god, no body armor, and no amulet seems like odd restrictions.

Why allow rings and no amulets? Did the first guy just not find a good amulet? :P

As for versions, only the first of the 3 listed winners did it in .15, so really any version should be fine. Maybe I'll take some stabs at this, but I think I'd want to use Chei. Chei is worse than no god, right? That should qualify :)

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

The no amulets rule was coined back when amulets of clarity were still in the game and I'm pretty sure that was the reason.

I think the general rule is to have fun with whatever version of this challenge you wish to play, just don't expect to get put in hall of fame if you are too lenient on yourself.

Because the point of the challenge is to make it much worse the normal MuMo. If you think just playing a MuMo is interesting you can always just play MuMo, there's no need to make up a special challenge rules for that because it amounts to making two choices in chargen.

Edit: regen was also considered and decided to be too good.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

Well, I'd also add the vague "must be played as Mo" rule - which entails various things like the no weapon conduct, has a somewhat softer version of the no magic conduct (damage through spells would be out, but I'd consider support magic okay), etc etc. So about half of the rules are the same - I'd avoid ranged combat, etc. But the body armor one is pretty harsh, we'll see how that goes.

For the record, here's the morgues:

http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/VinniePaz/m ... 010438.txt
http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/Implojin/mo ... 024331.txt
http://crawl.xtahua.com/crawl/morgue/Bo ... 224305.txt

All of the games involve scumming, imho, with the shortest win at 210k turns, and the longest at 442k turns.

Re: Mummy Monk challenge

That rule is so vague that even you, the person suggesting it, fail to define it. The mumo picture phrases some rules ambiguously, but it is easy to define them unambiguously (as Sar did).

Ok - another question - I've found the warlock's mirror - but I'm presuming that counts as a buckler? If so - damn!

Well, it wasn't even in the game when the challenge was conceived. That's probably something you'll have to figure out for yourself!

The next (better) MuMo challenge is to start as a MuCK and just drop all your gear (and god) on turn 1, then follow the guidelines for the MuMo challenge.

Good luck with that one! (Actually it may not be too bad - Xom's wrath can sometimes be better than actually sticking with him!)

Just watch out for those sneaky gloves of archery making your bread deal damage

Then you have to kite the thing you hit until it's back at full HP before you kill it
