Benefits of UMBRA?

So I have found the ring of Shadows on L6 somewhere and I'm a non-stealthy mostly melee type. The description says it causes enemies to miss. How often is that? Is it worthwhile to put it on instead of a Ring of Evasion +3 for example?

Umbra should translate to 4ish ev so it is slightly better than a 3 ev ring, not considering the other less important bonus.
Anyway umbra from the ring does affect yourself too, so I don't know if it's worthy the swap - especially if you're using a 2 hander with low skills.
But this is min-max a char, and you don't really need in dcss: just use the ring you prefer

IIRC, Umbra reduces both monster and player accuracy by 1d4+1; so EV-wise it's close to that EV+3 ring you have. But if one takes the player's accuracy penalty into account, I'd use the EV+3 ring if I didn't benefit from the 1.5x stealth boost, SInv, or +Inv.

I'm pretty sure you are immune to your own umbra. Also, undead don't take the accuracy penalty.

you can have benefits of +Inv too if you train Evo a little bit

As far as I know, "immune to your own umbra" is one of Dith's benefits, so a non-Dithmangos worshiper still has to deal with it.

undead are no longer immune to umbra's accuracy malus and "your own umbra" is not meaningful afaik

Dith and Yred protect against the negative effects of umbra; otherwise, regardless of source the umbra penalizes you.

Invisibility is a very good buff even if you don't stab

Yes, but a shortened view is almost never good for ranged, so if you weren't melee I'd say skip it unless you see a tough ranged, and want to fight it/escape it more easily.

A shortened view is still good for ranged and conjurations because fewer monsters will initially notice you, and those attracted by noise in your vicinity are less likely to see you, chase you, and make more noise.

Having fewer enemies chasing you is more important than a couple extra turns of free damage.

Oh, sorry... I thought Umbra applied a reduction of LOS. It turns out the spell Darkness does that, and Umbra is basically the Dith effect.

So my recommendation applies to people casting Darkness, not people wearing =oUmbra.

Does umbra cause a reduction of accuracy when
something IN an umbra targets something NOT IN an umbra (y/n)?

Its amazing how many things can go unanswered in a game as complicated as DCSS.

Umbra is checked for the defender, so no to the first, yes to the second.

Attack.cc:
  Code:
if (defender->backlit(false))
            mhit += 2 + random2(8);
        else if (!attacker->nightvision()
                 && defender->umbra())
            mhit -= 2 + random2(4);

So if the defender is being backlit or the attacker has nightvision, umbra has no effect.

Gotcha, so you gotta try to hit monsters while they're not in an umbra, which mostly pertains to having the ring of shadows on.
