Convenient switching ranged/melee with shield

I like switching between ranged and melee weapons. The ' keystroke is perfect for that. But that fails when wearing a shield.

Say I have a War Axe and a Shield and a Short bow. In that scenario I need to press T and unequip the shield and not forget to re-equip it once I'm done with the bow.

Is there a good way to fix this?

Are you aware that equipping/unequipping a shield takes 5 rounds? This makes switching a very poor choice in combat and outside of combat it doesn't make too much sense.

(You could assign a macro, but really, either go unshielded or forget about switching)

... or use slings if you want to keep your shield.

You can throw things with a shield and for most races right now throwing is the kind of ranged combat you want to be doing anyway.

Alternatively just use a 2h weapon in the first place.

Hand crossbows are also 1h. But really you should probably be using throwing or evocations or both as your ranged attack if you want to be using a shield.

I did not know that unequiping a shield took so long. I'm still struggling with the aut system it seems. Thanks for all the pointers. I realize now that I was on the wrong track.
