Enemy Hordes on cleared floors - Why?

I keep getting attacked when I come up stairs to leave a fight when I'm low MP or HP but keep getting attacked by hordes of enemy's. These are floors I have cleared out but keep running into packs of monsters. My last one was from shoal 4 and group on shoal 3 so up to shoal 2, again a pack, up to 1 and another pack, barely escape out of shoals and orc pack is waiting for me. Why are they there and is it coded from them to wait at stairs?

Monsters keep spawning on floors after you've cleared them. There's no special case for them to aim to the stairs.

How do you find the spawn points?

Unless I'm mistaken, they just sort of pop out of thin air wherever they want.

They won't spawn within sight out of thin air. They can spawn from staircases within sight though. If a monster randomly appears in fron of you and it wasn't from a staircase, I got teleported there.

You sure they won't spawn in LOS out of thin air? I'm pretty sure I've seen "The <foo> materializes out of thin air!" when not near any staircase.

At any rate though, there aren't any sort of static spawn points that I'm aware of, to the original question.

I've seen bands of monsrters spawning in LoS, but only in Abyss and maybe Pan (not sure about that one).

Yeah, the Abyss will spawn stuff within LOS. Should have mentioned. I don't think Pan will. I don't think Hell will either (barring hell effects).

I can't count the number of times I have had groups from 3 to 9 pop out of thin air around me. I'll go up a stair to escape and try to move to a stair up and pooff a group shows up. Normally is while I'm close (2-4 tiles) to the stairs I just came up.

I'm also under the impression that stuff has been showing up around stairs a bit more. Though I'm less certain about large groups; I've often seen just one or a few wander up.

This does sound consistent with a model in which monsters occasionally just decide to go along staircases though. Are they really "new" monsters, or are they part of the population from above/below? I wonder.

Yes monsters spawn out of LOS on cleared floors. This is an excellent thing because security is the death of excitement.

ehhhh, ymmv re: it being an "excellent" thing. I tend to think the game shouldn't throw popcorn at you that interrupts autotravel; maybe it would be cool if the spawn timer rolled against your XL and didn't place monsters that were below some threat level.

Sometimes the popcorn gives me chunks which prevent satiation base interruptions to auto travel.

Remove food please.

Are you sure that it's not just monsters adjacent to stairs following you up when you ascend the stairs, and you never knew they did that for the entire time you've been playing?

Well for my part, I'm quite sure I knew they do that. :geek:

Unless some of them really took their time "following," I don't think so at least... But i reserve the right to be sleepy/misunderstand what just happened now and again. Shrug.

Getting a handful of popcorn every so often is a valuable tradeoff for coming upstairs to flee from a hydra at half health after fighting off a yak pack only to discover a spiny frog has generated
