Buffs vs. Ranged

Right now I'm running a MfGl that's turned into a low-INT Skald, having found the Book of Battle in the mid-Dungeon. I'm discovering that as a melee-focused build, when I let enemies approach I can either whittle their HP down with ranged (tomahawks for now) or buff myself, but often there's not time for both. I've read here before that for ranged one can choose a weapon skill or evocations or sometimes invocations, but it's counterproductive to try to train more than one to high levels. I'm wondering whether buff spells might be added to this list, whether they might be effective when you don't degrade an approaching enemy at all.

Re: Buffs vs. Ranged

The thing about spells is that the lower level ones can have ridiculous power throughout the game. E.g. while 10 throwing is useless with 20 bows, repel missiles and spectral weapon are worthwhile no matter what. As a Mf, you'll want low level spells no question, since anything more than FDA is generally too heavy for them. Whether anything above level 4/5 is worth it is another question, which is more preference really.

As far as degrading approaching enemies, you don't necessarily need ranged, you can always turn corners and melee them. Depends on your god I guess.

Re: Buffs vs. Ranged

You could also train some stealth. You've got a +2 aptitude, and if you're casting buffs you're probably not in terribly heavy armor. That way if you see something scary at the edge of your line of sight, you can backpedal and buff up first.

There are also plenty of vaults and rooms in the game that clearly indicate a fight is gonna break out so you can prepare first.

You can also just keep your buffs up constantly, especially if you're using like, repel missiles and ozocubu's armour and you're not using the MP for anything else.

Support magic isn't just something productive to do until the monster gets in smashing range, and neither are ranged attacks. The question you're asking doesn't get the whole picture, which is really 'what can I put experience in that, with my species, god, and equipment, will make me the most effective?'
