How do faith-demanding treasure troves work?

I just met a treasure trove portal that "prizes the material over the divine" and says entering will make me "lose all favor" with my deity. Does that mean zero faith, or wrath, or excommunication?

It means your piety is reset to 0.

I thought it was set to like 15 or something, so you don't get excommunicated. I've done it before and gotten back up to max piety with the help of a faith amulet.

Yeah, piety is set to to 0 stars (I don't know the exact number). I have entered such a trove twice, because piety is usually easy to regain. I did it once with Trog, just did a couple of floors of elf and was back to 5* again.

Yeah, I did basically the same thing -- Faith+Elf+PietyOnKills = quick recharge. But the trove was junk, and even the stuff I got in elf (which I wouldn't have done otherwise) didn't make it worth the hassle...
