My next project is to win with all gods, and these are left. If anyone has a strong recommendation for any, I'd really appreciate it.

Jyiva: TrXX ^ Fedhas -> Jyiva (unless getting early slime altar). Any other race background is kinda good
Nemelex: anything works, but melee background are better (you have less exp to spend early on, getting similar results to magic user), races with good evo are obviosly better
Qzl: something strong all the game, possibly melee background. HO (cause good invo) probably's the best
Ru: any race any background, he's good
Xom: Tr
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

Re: Gozag, Jiyva, Nemelex Xobeh, Qazlal, Ru, Sif Muna, Xom

On one hand, is good to worship a god early on when the game is most difficult, one with strong early power which is worthwhile as substitute until you get jyva. On the other, you want some easy wrath you can survive after ditching him.
Fedhas has the strongest *..... power, which can carry anything easily until lair (and over), and one of the worst effect of fedhas' wrath is getting oklobs near you, and jyiva helps greatly granting rcorr.
Sure, you still elemental miscasts but that you should survive (especially with high hp race like trolls)
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

So that was it! I didn't know that J gives rCorr. Thanks for all the advice.

Nemelex - SpEn
Jiyva - OpTm of Fedhas -> Jiyva (assuming you don't mind dying a few times). If you are, then Tr anything of anything -> Jiyva
Qazlal - HOFi
Ru - Pretty much anything will work, Ru is good all around. HuTm is an ok choice.
Sif Muna - MfSu, among many others
Xom - never played with it.

Most of these recommendations are very-very weird. Especially the OpTm, yuck.

Op is the second (or third) worst species in the game. Tm is the second (or third) worst background in the game. To recommend OpTm, when you can pick anything... this is so fucking absurd that I cannot find any words for it.

Re: Gozag, Jiyva, Nemelex Xobeh, Qazlal, Ru, Sif Muna, Xom

Seems that nobody told you about Gozag... Since I was afraid of food clock, I used it with Sp**, En probbaly, because it needs no god to win... Fun to play imho

Here's a dump of CeTm of Fedhas->Jiyva that went quite well

I find Sif boring and had only some MuSu games...

For Qazlal, HO Fi or Gl is a solid choice : you need high Invo to make best use of the granted power, and you can rely on them like conjuration support, just play a melee brute with Invo.

MuGl of Gozag is very nice, you don't starve and can quaff potions.
Jiyva is fun with characters who want to change their stats
Nemelex Xobeh - Fe/Ko
Qazlal - heavy armour
Ru - fun with normal speed stabbers since the god helps to stab, run away and kill unhexables
Sif Muna - MuSu/Cj, no hunger and great help with miscast protection
Xom - no idea, DrCK was good and I haven't played others except MuCK a couple of times

Gozag: nah, you don't really want to win this one
Jiyva: not actually possible!
Nemelex Xobeh: nerfed, don't bother, you can't even be a dungeon vacuum anymore
Qazlal: more like Qaz-LOL, am I right?
Ru: Ru is great, play Ru all the time
Sif Muna: I mean channeling is pretty okay, just whatever book start
Xom: I think people do trolls because it's a troll, but remember, trolls suck in the midgame. maybe xom will give you cool mutations or something to help you along

They really don't. Through Lair and Orc you get "hey look at me killing everything with my huge claws" and then you start finding large rocks and you get "hey look at me killing everything with large rocks" and the whole time you also get a heaping load of HP.

Yeah, getting a bunch of EV or AC is kind of hard (though a good shield can be pretty OK) but you'll start seeing dragons and can make some dragon armour by the time you start dealing with yaktaur packs and such (which I'd consider the midgame).

Trolls may not be as insanely dominant in the midgame as they are in the early game, but I'd never call them weak.

I wonder if some sequel guru can run a query to see average AC/EV for Tr who died middle game (XL 12-18?).

Well, I took your comment seriously and I agree with it. Unlucky Trolls are below average at this stage: little/no magic, bad AC, bad EV, bad MR, bad stealth and suddenly you cannot rely on regen because there are too many monsters around.

A quick clarification: I am interested in the strongest (easiest) combos, not in the most challenging or whatever. I definitely won't play any stupid mummies (or octopodes, felids, formicids).

I have already started a TrHu, went Fedhas, then switced to Jiyva when I found an altar at the Slime entrance. Now the dungeon and Orc is done, also got the Slime rune. Nice run so far. Jiyva is always shuffling my stats and mutations.

I'd do SpEn of Ru/Gozag/Nem (assuming you don't mind repeating combos, but any good Sp is fine), CeGl^Qaz and uh, perhaps DrCj^Sif (disclaimer: I haven't yet won with and don't particularly like Sif). If the TrHu fails you could try TrCk^Jiyva.

Playing a caster of sif is pretty easy, it's just tedious. A lot of running away from fights to regain mp.

Why? Isn't the point of Sif Muna that you can channel mana during fights? Just pick Mu to deal with hunger.

Re: Gozag, Jiyva, Nemelex Xobeh, Qazlal, Ru, Sif Muna, Xom

In my experience, Sif's channeling is more useful after a fight than during a fight. Sif's channeling is pretty weak turn-wise and gives enemies lots of extra turns to hit you. When playing a squishy caster, it's much safer to retreat than give enemies 2-3 free hits. Per fireball. Which you might need to cast several of. But having full mp soon after a fight helps with all the monsters that run over when they hear what the noise is.

The point of Sif isn't the channeling, it's the access to any spells you want and the miscast protection.

If you want more mp during fights, pick Veh. Her mp regen on kills is much better than Sif's channeling.

If you find a given god being too weak or inappropriate, you just can do a MiBe and switch to desired god during the orbrun. I did that to Kiku (and I feel guilty for doing this because Kiku is nice) and to Jiyva. I also got some Jiyva piety for the Slime Creature title!

I concur with SpEn of Ru (you get free stabs; it's quite good) and SpXX of Gozag (he actually makes food less of a problem for spriggans, instead of a bigger problem like most characters.)

Magipi, this just bothers me. You have no apologies for cursing someone who proffered solicited advice only because you didn't like the advice? This has got to be at least as rude as bringing up balls in a topic, but, Tavern being Tavern, you won't even be looked at sideways for this.

I remember you were nice, once.

I don't see any cursing at me. They are cursing at OpTm. I don't mind if anyone curses at me anyway, I have tough skin mutation lvl 3 (or at least I like to think so).

A quick clarification: I am interested in the strongest (easiest) combos, not in the most challenging or whatever. I definitely won't play any stupid mummies (or octopodes, felids, formicids).

My MuFi evocator of gozag was one of the strongest characters I've had in the last year or so, also fun and memorable; it took me a few tries to get one going but way less than Op/Fe/Fo/Dg. Granted I had good luck with shops. It isn't any Mi--, but for gozag I would definitely recommend a mummy, and probably not a book start.

To me it looks like the *reccomendation* is being cursed. At least that is what I read as the antecedent to "this". I agree that there is no way "this" directly refers to the person who made the suggestion. Although one might interpret it as implying that a "fucking stupid" suggestion was from a "fucking stupid" person.

One minor thing: I was calling the suggestion "absurd", not "stupid".

Still, I think Aule is right. I was acting immaturely, perhaps because I had a bad day, and started flaming over nothing. I am not proud of this, and sorry for it, Bel. The next day I was probably in a much better mood, because Sandman suggested mummies, and I did not become mad at him. :D

For this message the author Magipi has received thanks:

It happened because I tried to come with "least annoying" combos for Sif Muna and Gozag. They are not the most powerful ones but they are the least annoying IMHO. Chunk-eating and you-cannot-cast-because-you-are-starving for the former and rush-or-you-will-starve for the latter were very unpleasant when I played non-Mu. Also potions are really great for Mu.

I'm pretty sure spriggans are easier than mummies. And gozags food issues are just as mitigated...

My next project is to win with all gods, and these are left. If anyone has a strong recommendation for any, I'd really appreciate it.

Gozag - I've never used him. However food issues are a thing with Gozag; so something that runs outside the food clock or doesn't cast a lot is probobly a good choice. Considering the distracting powers of the Gold and the Food Clock, and the fact you can petition for Blood when you need it, a Vampire Enchanter might work well.

Jiyva: You don't plan for a Jiyva run. Nothing's really that good or bad for Jiyva.

Nemelex: If you want to Nem you want someone with good Evo. The highest Evo without a major downside [DD lack of healing and Spriggan's Diet] is Kobolds with 3.

Qazlal: Loads of ways you can handle this. Due to the noise you either want an Axe-user for the cleave; or some form of ranged combat to kill things as they are attracted into your storm. Also there's the gimmick of a Translocations user using Translocations to displace enemies and themselves to keep things in your storm. If I was running a Translocator Qazlal would be my choice.

Ru: Personally my most successful game ever was an MfTm of Ru. Leap is massive for Tm. Close in on ranged targets; jump away from a bad fight. Ru gives two massive panic buttons, and building piety is EASY with Ru; just cut off a hand because you're training UC. You still rip things apart. Yeah the start is rough but you're a Mf; just pick up a spear and use that until you get Spider Form up. Then you're golden because high EV apt + EV boost = You only really have to fear smiting early.

Sif Muna: Works for any caster not using PURELY Conjurations.

Xom: Uh... hope for an altar on D:2 and get him on the orb run?

I just wanted to add that this topic made me build a Mu of Gozag, and it's powerful : you should try it !

Being able to haste/might/agility/HW "at will" with Mu is sweet...

qaz is a very easy god to win

just pick a beefy race, roll a Fighter then spam the sh*t out of invos for anything you can't melee

Qaz is easy in the same way chei is easy. Most of the game you feel really strong, but they expose you to some additional risks that other goods don't which may or may not kill you.

I can see your reasoning for avoiding these races, but if you want to win with Xom, you might give Formicid another look. Their innate stasis blocks Xom's most irritating trick, his habit of teleporting you at the worst possible times. So what if Fo can't teleport, zerk, or haste? Their ability to wield 2h weapons plus large shields at only 15 skill makes Formicids the best melee tanks to be found. Shaft is good for escaping trouble in the early dungeon, while Dig is absurdly useful for LOS control and murderhole tactics just about everywhere except Vaults. Zigzag patterns are super helpful for dealing with smiters, tormentors etc. Also, the Swiftness spell is not blocked by stasis, only haste is, so in an emergency there's still a way to hustle.

Another Xom note, you might want to avoid the usual practice of using autoexplore to see every last nook and cranny on a level, as Xom tends to get bored when nothing fun is happening. You don't need to rush, but you'll get much better effects and mutations from him if you pick up the pace.

Re: Gozag, Jiyva, Nemelex Xobeh, Qazlal, Ru, Sif Muna, Xom

Part 1 (Jiyva) accomplished!

First attempt: a TrHu (Hu for the starting large rocks). It went smoothly, first I worshipped Fedhas, then in Lair I converted to J, which is a mistake. It is super annoying that jellies eat up most of the gold of orcs, and as a result you cannot buy what you want. So my poor troll was quite badly equipped, but it was still winnable, however, some bad play and a shock serpent killed him in Snake.

Second attempt: enough of trolls, let's run a MiMo (Mo, so Fedhas gives me mushrooms immediately). This was a good run, but unfortunately it was in trunk, and I died in Zot vs a death cob without even realizing what was wrong. Fuck trunk.

Third attempt: another Mimo, Fedhas again. This time there was no J altar in Lair. Well, let's pick up a rCorr amulet first, then I will go down, I thought. Time went by, the run was good, 2 runes, Vaults, Elf, Crypt, Depths cleared, even a short Abyss trip, but no rCorr. Well, let's try it without. I played carefully to reach the booom floor, then lured TRJ out, went round the corner back to the middle, and converted. Next I spent a lot of turns on cleared levels waiting for the slimes to consume all the crap, and then rune number 3. Next came Zot, while Fedhas was angry, and Jiyva was constantly annoying me by putting my haste back in the "red zone" (first by decreasing my Int, then giving me big horns so that my Int hat fell off, then giving me wild magic mut.)

All in all, Jiyva is certainly not a bad god, but it's extremely annoying, I don't like it.

The winning dump:

Well, you spent 12k turns with Jiyva and 87k turns with Fedhas...

Yes, I would not count this game alone as a J win... but with the 3 runs combined, I am satisfied.

Ru is very strong. I was constantly uncertain what to sack and what not (probably sacking experience was not a wise move), but it worked out fine. Got some really awesome gear. So now I have 100% winrate with Ru :D

A quick clarification: I am interested in the strongest (easiest) combos, not in the most challenging or whatever. I definitely won't play any stupid mummies (or octopodes, felids, formicids).

I have not try Summoning in 0.16+, but MuSu of Sif used to be extremely strong. It was able to go through the whole dungeon on summons solely, totally underleveled but who cares if you have not to fight anyway.

Formicide of Ru for a 3-rune feels like one of the most easy and durable combo I ever played: you have a two-hander, shield, free blink (damage included to get rid of half a pack or EV monster) and extremely strong AOE. To give a rough idea my generic FoFi^Ru cleared Vaults 5 right after Vaults 4, without going to Depth or something, and not even was in danger. Antennae to avoid tough fights when you need to be safe, shaft to avoid fights if no other options are present.
