This was probably mentioned before, but *** piety under Ashenzari is much more valuable than advertised.

Also, a lack of resistances can be made up for with destructive power. A room filled with enemies that can poison your poor crawler /freeze /whatever is not impending death if you can obliterate >50% of the mobs with immolation/wands/spells.
There is always something new to learn.

I have come to the conclusion that the most important lesson for success at DCSS is: DON'T MAKE ANY MISTAKES! This is particularly true at low levels, and when playing an Octopode. Words to live by, which I don't...

When making your way through the Hells, never forget the fact that cancellation exists. That way, you might avoid a humiliating failure involving petrification and spawned mobs. :oops:
