Don't do Tomb with a DD of Trog. I'm actually reasonably sure it can be done, but it's so bloody tedious. It's bad when losing a character feels like a relief.

Indeed, unless he somehow thought a staff of cold was just a staff with freezing on it.

Actually, hold on, even a staff of cold would just lower the spellpower, not lower the success chance, right? If so, my only explanation is that his "freezing" weapon was an artifact weapon with -3 INT.

Ajonos wrote:If so, my only explanation is that his "freezing" weapon was an artifact weapon with -3 INT.

You are right, I was switching randart weapon with Int +5 with morningstar of freezing -_- that made confusion,
so failure with Int+5 weapon is 6% and with morningstar of freezing failure is 10% (because of -5 Int)

Fun fact: While you are asleep, the melee attack that wakes you up is a 'stab' that deals 2.5x damage. (This is also how you can die to bat melee as a deep dwarf.)

I *really* need to learn this lesson.

Also when my best character died fairly recently I learned that if the game is telling you that monster is drowning you, that might actually be a really big deal and you should pay attention to it.

EDIT: Just learned that you should probably never blind-draw from a deck Nemeleh Xobeh gives you. Getting banished into the Abyss is a possible result. 0_0 (first time trying this particular deity)

That being said, a Spriggan Assassin seems much more likely to escape the Abyss than most characters, even at XL 11. This is the most exciting and fun character I've ever played XD

So ... never drink a potion of lignification if you are just waiting on a tele to go off. Not only will it CANCEL the teleport but it will make it impossible for you to teleport afterward. In fact it will basically kill you. Lost a very promising DeWz (my first) in Swamp 5 when I suddenly found myself facing end game monsters (high level demons, etc) out of a vault. All I had to do was heal up with my wand and wait it out but I got impatient and took the lignification thinking the increased AC would help. Bad, bad move. Went from 168 hp to 0 in no time. Wish I'd known the entirely unintuitive (imho) tele malus was there. (Yes I know, roots keep you in place but that doesn't stop you from going up a stairs if you are held by a mangrove...)

It would not have been the end of the world. I would have blinked or teled again, also there were no more dangerous monsters than that which I faced there. I should note that most of the rest of the level was explored so while it is possible some OP monster could have been elsewhere it would have been unlikely.

Several annoying orb spiders on an island surrounded by deep water?

Use Confusion and watch them walk into deep ocean and drown...

If there's a rock/wall next to deep ocean tile, spiders (at least Orb spiders) can move onto deep ocean tile (climbing on wall). They can also fall off and drown... :D

I'll be adding the "confuse monster next to deep water" technique to my regular bag of tricks.

You can not refresh Flying from a ring if you are flying already. You have to land first to refresh it.
Also, Iceform FLOATS!

I was flying over deep water when I started to loose boyance. I was too far out to land anywhere in time. That's when I learned the first lesson. My very promising NaTm drowned. The second lesson I realized a month later. (I confess, this was not learned today)

Crawl has a smart 'flying is ending' warning that warns you a bit before you wouldn't have enough turns left to make it back to ground. Did it not work in your case?

It did...

But at that time I thought I could just refresh the flight from the ring to extend the buff. When I noticed you can't do that, I looked desperately in my inventory for a solution and eventually accepted that I was lost. The answer would have been ice form which I had from my starting book and still had remembered.

You always have enough time to teleport if you start a teleport right when you get the warning your flight is going to expire. Said teleport will always put you on a space where you can survive without flight (well, unless you die to monsters). This is the more-generally-applicable thing to do when you mess up with not-renewable flight, though of course in that specific situation ice form is probably better.

Using summons while fighting slime creatures can make the fight more dangerous, since the slime creatures will walk around your summons to get to you, forcing them to merge as if you were fighting them in a corridor.

This is also good for the one Bailey with all the enemies who attack you with polearms across the river. In particular, I discovered this when I got to the end, with the orc warriors and knights on an island in the middle surrounded by lava. I made it to a treasure room with barely any health, and wasn't sure I'd be so lucky trying to get out. So, as a long shot, I started firing a wand of confusion at them. They all ended up killing themselves walking into the lava and I grabbed the treasure and got out easily.
