@joellercoaster: hitting O, X, b will change to numpad mode- you lose the vi movement configuration, but gain (k)ick and (l)oot.

  Code:
You shall the deep elf soldier!
Space bends around the deep elf soldier.
The deep elf soldier disapears!
Lugonu accepts you kill.
You feel a bit more experienced.
You hear a splash. x2

....I'm not completely sure, but I think I just discovered you can use distortion to blink enemies over deep water. Is that possible?

It's functionally similar to g, except the command's used in Nethack, not Crawl, and used to pick up items in chests, not on the floor. Sorry about that, I'll try and stay on topic and talk about one game at a time.

Back to Crawl lessons learned today:

Easiest fix for oklobs ever: stand just out of LOS and mash spammals until they go away. It's a hillariously low risk and low cost way to deal with what is usually a more significant threat. 8D

Apologies for the multipost, but this lesson had to go up.

You know how we discovered that new plants can spawn? Well, apparently that includes oklobs. >_<

I discovered this unfortunate fact after a ctele to a region I had thought was safe.

Wands of polymorph other are pretty good against Oklobs. They turn them into wandering mushrooms.

Summon Butterflies is a bad idea if you worship okawaru - each one is just a little piety-popping bubble.

Also - Removing an amulet of faith gives a major immediate piety hit, even if you only just put it on.

The piety loss is 1/3 of current piety - the higher you were standing with your god, the more piety you lose. Piety gain is also slower beyond **** - making the hit at high piety even worse.

Lesson learned - Yet another reason to never ever test-ID amulets. Use that scroll of ID.

If you're a melee fighter worshipping Okawaru, turn off Throwing skill the moment you get it. Otherwise, be prepared for an infinite train of darts gifts. No more weapons and armour for you.

(Seriously though, this could be considered a bug, although it's given by the game mechanics of gift timeout - it's shorter for missiles.)

EDIT: I revoke the bug consideration - the train is only nearly infinite. Eight darts gifts in a row do give you the sense, though.

Unseen horrors dispite being an "x" are not demonic. So not so bad if you are a necromancer as I previously thought. You just can't see them convulsing with pain since they are invisible. Also, vampiric draining always hits weather you can see them or not. You just have to hope you know where they are :?

Lure them into a corridor and move away from them. They behave like bats, so if you move away, they will end up next to you.

to be honest, i don't remember. i'm running a straight-melee hill orc priest, so i may have not noticed. i ran away in like 5 or 6 turns anyway, seeing how i couldn't land a single hit. i've fought those once or twice in the past, but i guess i had sInv.

True that. My learn applies only to pure melee characters, who have an incredible hell of a time in the spider portal due to the absence of choke points.

Yeah, I can see that going badly. Take two steps in and you'll get swarmed. Might be a good place to carry a Wand of Digging into to make your own chokepoint if you can handle non-stop one vs one fighting for many, many turns.

Beserkers can use Brothers in Arms. I managed to clear the spider's nest - INCLUDING MY OWN GHOST FROM DYING IN IT LAST TIME - and credit it entirely to abusing BiA. Beserking iron trolls just run through ripping everything up. :D

^Brothers in arms solves anything. There's no such thing as an OOD monster for a berserker. There are only "things I can kill" and "things I ask Trog for help in killing". Well, except for a few fringe cases, like some summon spammers, torment spammers, certain smite targeters, things with abjuration strong enough to defy Trog, or SpCK ghosts with weapons of distortion.

My important lessons for the day:

Wands apparently have a recharge limit you can hit. But they don't explode when you hit it!

Apparently the sword in the stone vault can come with elves guarding it. Also, this vault can appear in slime. The result of which are vault guards who get acid-ed to death before you find them, and a randart sword you will never ever try to attain for fear of being randomly teleported into acid wall death.

Caps can come with the effect of an amulet of guardian spirit!

Nemelexies with legendary decks of summoning are frikken incredible to behold. 0_0
I unwitting summoned an executioner on lair:3, and watched in awe as it cleared the whole floor for me. After that I was absolutely paranoid about touching that deck for fear of summoning a hostile one.

I've little experience with Nemelex, but comparable experiences with Makhleb would suggest that you don't mess with legendary summoning without a nicely-stacked escape deck or two at hand.

The Pentagram card never summons hostile enemies. Most other summonings cards can only summon hostiles at power 0 (with a 25% chance), except for Foxfire which can now always summon a mix of hostile and friendly creatures.

...that's odd. It was definitely sword in the stone though- randart sword, on a tele trap, surrounded by green crystal and transparent stone walls. Someone must have tweaked it somewhere between 0.7 and trunk I guess.

Lesson for today:

If you're playing as a Nemelexian, and all you have for mutations are stat boosts, especially if they're int, do not draw from un-ID-ed decks. Because it'll be a deck of wonders. And you'll draw the potion. And it will cure mutation. Every frikken time.

As an aside, I really wish rMut gave resistance to losing mutations as well as gaining them.

Erolcha and Sonja both have the capability to send you to the abyss if they are not killed promptly. Which seems like GG for anyone who is not either extremely lucky or extremely well prepared.

Fuzzy Hlumppken never stood a chance.

Also, The random angry berserk mutation will drain you of food, and slow you at all the worst times. Not being able to wear armor or losing 10% hp is a problem of manageable degree. Berserking yourself uncontrollably till you starve (especially if you have a fast metabolism) can really throw your game. >.>

Yeah, about that. Maybe it's wise to replace icon on a wand from that of "potion of healing" with "heal wounds"(bigger blue cross) - it will be more intuitive for new players.
