Owwwww...on the other hand, this Makhlebite (and Vehumite, before the upgrade to cloud targeting) who has killed himself far too many times with bad targeting just felt a teeny bit better.

When you have played online ASCII for over two years and want to get a shot at tiles, be wary and look what your opponents are.
Not discerning the difference between an orc warrior and a regular well-equipped orc can be fatal very, very quickly.
I may as well feel like learning a completely new game.

In .10 trunk, ghosts can throw sticky flame beyond melee range. Over and over.

Yep, they've always been able to do that. Actually, players used to be able to do that, too. It was pretty strong. So strong that it got nerfed all the way down to melee range, only it was never deemed important to nerf monster spells to go along. This is actually kind of a pattern, and if you watch carefully you'll notice that monsters get to keep all the pre-nerf overpowered versions of all sorts of spells.

When your staircases are blocked by (1)Eustachio and a pack of orcs, (2)Dowan and Duvessa, and (3)Pikel, his slaves and another pack of orcs, Xom is rolling with laughter at you.
Also, when deciding that Dowan and Duvessa are the easiest to deal with, Duvessa WILL be wielding a distortion branded sword.

On the other hand, AFAIK monster sticky flames can miss/get blocked which is no longer possible for the player spell.

You can play Console Crawl even through your Android tool (in my case, it's a tablet)!
Just install a tool called "ConnectBot" and somewhy manage to connect a USB keyboard to the hardware. =)
I didn't test the playing (and so I don't know whether numpad works or not), but I could easily spectate.

With constriction in trunk, if you teleport away while constricting a monster, you take it with you. It makes sense, but it's something you might not think about while you're trying to flee.

Alrighta, now I know why I like pure-text interfaces: sending a messagE through an android device (dolphin HD) is *reaklly* hard. That's right, reaklly hard, because the lags you experience while typing all the stuff will reakll you out...
Iвщ рщзу еру ащкгь сфт цщк лцшерщге ОЫ. I mean, i do hope this forum can work without jAVascript. I don't even want to delete the mistyped text, and with my pedantism, only one thing can make me do that... LAaaaaags

Edit: Still, Opera Mini works, and works EXCEPTIONALLY better comparing to all other browsers. It even matches my USB keyboard in speed!
Another good reason to support text-only input and to hate WordPress.

1) Promising KoHus have a serious rCentaur-- thing going on in the very early game. Lately, I have been experimenting with fire in particular. Read-id a scroll of immolation in a corridor? Yes, a centaur will hear it around the corner. Wear an unidentified ring? Yes, it will be a ring of ice when you meet a fire-bowed centaur. And yes it will only take 1 turn after the centaur is in your LOS.

2) Your 18 lvl char with regeneration active CAN succumb to poison if you don't have any healing potions with you. And the reason you don't have any healing potions on a 18 lvl char is because you are using Ozu's refrigeration and left the majority of your potions in your stash and on to a couple to a "safe location" on the current level. And when you instant teleport with Nemelex cards to your mini-stash with only like 11 hit points left you WILL realize that your mini-stash is gone. This was one of the most humiliating experiences of my Crawl-career  Will wear that rPoison ring next time. I'll wear 2.

3) In Crawl there are very few invincible characters in the mid- or late-mid game. The only two I have found so far are heavy armored DDBe with a big axe of vampirism and TrEE with statue form. With the former you usually end up with full health after every battle and with the latter losing HP doesn't matter because you have a poopload of it, you regenerate f-a-s-t and you can kill everything with 1-3 hits anyways. Playing 0.8 still, so I guess both of these have been nerfed into oblivion by now ;).

Constriction made Snake Pit no longer a walk in the park when you got rPois. It's HARD, especially if you're a melee.

I dodged that one by bringing a save over of a character that already completed it. But I have noticed tentacled monstrosities are harder now, so I'll take your word for it. In any case, I was actually referring to playing AS a naga and constricting the other guy. Apparently you don't let go before you teleport, even though you're the one trying to get away. I suppose that does present some interesting new tactical opportunities though.

The melee range "nerf" wasn't really a nerf. Sticky Flame is guaranteed to hit now, and can easily take care of 90%+ of threats through Lair. (If you're brave, this group includes hydrae. It just hurts.)

If you think that's not a nerf you probably didn't use old sticky flame much. I don't think anybody is saying Sticky Flame is weak now, but it's definitely weaker than it was before.

If you are playing badly enough, you can start your day with a Zotsplat, and your sixth and final death of the day can be getting one-shotted by Edmund with a +4 Flail of Crushing.

At this point, you should seriously stop playing Crawl for a while.

You just need to learn to run more. It's cowardly, sure, but I tend to completely skip over half the uniques I run across, sometimes trying to avoid it by stair hopping and clearing half the other side of the level, sometimes just skipping the level altogether. I think the best skill to learn for surviving crawl is learning when to dive a level or even fully bailing with an annotation of "screw this branch: Mennas. Come back when have tele wand".

When you try to overwhelm Eustachio with own summons - never do this in a small room. Or at least double check there are no orc priests behind.

And never try to kick Menkaure with MuWi in close combat, even if it is D:4. Especially if it is D:4!

I don't think I saw this, it fits in with all the Death Yak <> Yak, but Alligator <> Crocodile.

Also snapping turtle is like a reaching brand on a demon trident, it hits very hard. Do not think, "oh I'll just go in and sticky flame it." You might sticky flame it, but you'll also die. This is more embarrassing when you do this with a character that has learned OOD. You will also hate yourself when you run into your sticky flaming, OOD casting ghost the next time you visit the lair.

There's a swamp ending where a cloud of freezing vapors blocks the entrance to the rune vault. Sure, you can use dispel undead to clear out the simulacra and freezing wraiths that are wandering about, and one semi-controlled blink will get you past the first set of clouds, but clouds randomly appear inside, and those can kill you, too.

Maybe I should have bought that rC jewelry. This is the first time I've gotten a whip of pain to do more damage than a whip of electrocution, and I was hoping to find a demon whip Kiku could convert for me. All gone.

If you want to evaporate a "beneficial" potion (sometimes they create clouds of flame/freezing_vapour/pestilence/mutation), throw those potions of agility into the fray. I guess you won't be drinking them anyway. If you are fairly strong, potions of might can go next.
Even if you are planning to be a pure mage, keeping those few potions of berserk rage might be fairly useful -- they might create clouds of flame with 50% probability.
