If you find a robe of the archmage on Dlvl 1 as a DEEE, a centaur will be waiting for you on Dlvl2.

The run when you find rings of wizardry and magical power by D3, you're playing a Fighter. The run when you find two +5/+6 rings of slaying you're playing a Wizard.

Heh. My current Wizard is mostly killing things with an axe right now, since he found it lying around... sometimes you just make lemonade :)

It's taken me hundreds of games to start realising that starting role doesn't have dictate much, if you don't want it to!

[14:51] <Henzell> pan[6/7]: Beware, if you leave a level (including getting banished (including by the wizards in lom lobon's vault (including high MR in your pan checklist is a good idea))), it won't be generated again -- making you miss the rune.

Except, that is, if you leave the level to enter a Ziggurat.

On the plus side, I cleared a Ziggurat for the first time, and found a dungeon exit a couple of levels later.

Also, dungeon exits do not generate in Pan as frequently as that led me to believe. Bring a weapon of distortion if you value your sanity.

Conclusion: Felids in Pan are insanity.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Also: Agnes is much tougher you remember, possibly because you never ran into her when you were still this squishy. And uncontrolled blink is not a great way to deal with this discovery.

RIP Shelf the mad axe-wielding DSWz of Ashenzari, you were truly entertaining right up until then.

Wielding a weapon of distortion to remove a plant (and afterwards unwielding it) it surely more tedious than using the normal dagger if it results in you-know-what. ;)

Lessons from the tourney: The Abyss can still kill you at low levels, even if you haven't died there in years. And do not attempt to streak with a mummy, if you haven't played Crawl in months.

You are your adventurer's worst enemy. Never think: "Lemme just try that, what's the worst that could happen?"
Perhaps your adventurer does not think like this. But he has to obey, perhaps to his doom. Give him good advice.

Do not stairdance using stairs back to the previous level that you haven't used before.

Especially if you bypassed a dangerous unique.

Pulled a lone skeletal warrior back to D:14 and got knocked into the next county by Rupert whom I had left behind, and who just happened to be by the stairs. (He had rPois armour and I was a VM...why wouldn't I have bypassed him?)

The tab key has no compunctions whatsoever about taking you into an exclusion area.

Also, TSO and shields of reflection do not mix well.

I learned this after my buckler of reflection bounced Aizul's poison arrow back at him, poisoned him and TSO put me in penance.
(I'm wondering if I should consider this a bug and report it on Mantis...any feedback? It's technically correct but doesn't seem appropriate thematically.)

Thx minmay. Can't believe I've never had it happen before. I end up with TSO endgames more often than not and reflection is just about my favorite shield.

Thankfully the current character had the unrand shield of resistance and had just made enough shield skill that I was about to switch over anyway.

Being a full square away from a Hydra when in Spider Form isn't enough distance to get up stairs before he can move into range and attack.

...until you are impaled by five javelins and a couple icicles at once (possibly while mesmerised) on Shoals:5.
Though I don't think Shoals 1-4 are much harder than Swamp 1-4, but the branch endings have quite a margin between them.

Maybe I just had bad luck on how the turns lined up, I thought I was safe to go up the stairs... no water around at all.

Nevermind...

  Code:
There is a stone staircase leading up here.
Your transformation has ended.
The giant centipede stings you but does no damage.
The giant centipede barely misses you.
There is a stone staircase leading up here.
The six-headed hydra bites you!
* * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * *
The six-headed hydra bites you!
* * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * *
The six-headed hydra closely misses you.
The six-headed hydra bites you.
* * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * *
The six-headed hydra misses you. The six-headed hydra bites you!
You die...

Apparently my spider form wore off just as soon as I hit the staircase. Even so, he was a full square away, I hit < he moved and apparently got in all 6 attacks before I could move up the staircase. Maybe I'm missing something though because I got the "There is a stone staircase leading up here." message twice - Another important lesson for me to learn today?

Don't forget scrolls of remove curse and ID, and lots of them, when running a Ziggurat, or you'll have to bail out on level 20 due to lack of space for more items.

Edit: also related, bring a melee weapon or lots of summons even if you're a ranged weapon specialist, to deal with slime levels, unless you enjoy that slurping sound as your +9 bolts get vacuumed up.

Things I've learned in the day I've been playing...

Don't use random wands against crystal walls, for lightning may kill you.

Sometimes, when at low HP, beleaguered and potionless, you should turn and fight rather than run. But you will never know when until it is too late.

Just because you've shrugged off multiple Orbs of Destruction and Iron Shots from Boris, it doesn't mean he still can't pull an 80 damage shot from nowhere and kill you just before he dies, this time even with 30+ AC/SH.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.
