Indeed.

Also, an early-game tip: Snakes are not the same as small snakes.

On those lines, iguana : giant gecko :: water moccasin : snake. (Or, worse, as yak : sheep.) Huge increase in power for being "only" the next level up for the monster type.

And likewise, Yak =/= Death Yak. Just because they can both appear on the same level doesn't mean they're anywhere near the same power.

Another thing about giant spores: never ever go and stab them, no matter how tempting that question mark is. I actually did this once (survived too, by the way), yet I still have to fight the insane impulse every time I come across one of these things.

Firing a +4 exploding sling bullets from a +9,+12 sling into a packed shoals:5 rune vault will not kill, or even significantly inconvenience, anything inside. It will, however, wake up every every javelineer in the world.

On the plus side, if you manage to survive the forest of incoming spears and run away, when you sneak back the rune will have been left completely undefended.

Yeah, but you can often get the Abyssal rune at pretty low level that way. Just run (at a slight diagonal), only gun when you have to, rest in nooks, and teleport as soon as you get gummed up even a bit. Repeat Abyssings now mean that I no longer fear the Abyss so long as I have double digit levels.

Lesson: If you accidentally use ID a potion of Mutation that gives you good Mutations, stop use IDing potions.

Adding Aizul to the list of 'what the hell just happened' uniques. My level 15 KoFE rounded a corner and was dead in two turns.

Yea, Aizul is really bad. There is only one thing to do:
when he sees you immediately read a scroll of teleportation
After that you can risk a little fight for 2 or 3 turns, before you are hopefully far,far away.

No matter how tempting it is to stash that shiny new suit of gold dragon armor, it is never a good idea to try to climb the stairs of the deepest dungeon level you've been to while encumbered. I lost an extremely promising KoBe in Vault 8 when two cyclopes killed me with six rocks in one terrible action.

Oh god, yeah, that's another thing: being burdened and going up the stairs means enemies have free potshots at you as you go up. Being overloaded means you -can't- go up the stairs. Found this out the hard way.

Lure the individual slimes back upstairs and put paid to them. If you pillar dance a monster slime for only a few turns, it will split back apart and you can then brutalize the mini slimes in a manner fitting for their kind.

Forward the Dwarves.

not only that, if you're overloaded and try to go up stairs the game tells you you can't... and counts that as your action. Your incredibly slow action.

Agreed. I get that it's supposed to be like "Well, you can go down stairs and not up because of gravity." but it takes up a turn or three, where a simple "You can't do this yet" message would suffice.

That's long since fixed in trunk, actually. Trying to climb stairs while overloaded costing a turn sounds like a bug too.

I just found out that new plants can spontaneously grow. I discovered this when a I found a brand new plant blocking a staircase I'd been down before. I thought it would be a mimic, but it wasn't.

Using a mapping scroll in an ossuary will not show you areas behind secret doors, but will show you the secret door.

Portals can appear in slime.

Thank goodness I had a scroll of magic mapping and wand of digging, but that was not a fun sprint.

Edit: Make that two consecutive portals can appear in slime. At least this one was close to the stairs. Game is just teasing me.

If you have managed to get Fire Storm castable for the first time ever, it is a good idea to use it on that pack of yaktaurs and yaks you just ran into, instead of trying to confuse them and pick them off one by one.

Stabbed Royal Jelly today and killed it in one hit.
