That totally awesome vault you've never been able to teleport into might actually be a gate to hell.

Gloorq can Torment multiple times a turn. Especially if you're slowed after Berserk. Ever been tormented four times by the same creature by just taking a single step? I would have avoided him entirely after that, but he seemed rather reluctant to step away from his rune...

Reading scrolls of curse weapon/armor/jewellry (and I guess other harmful/useless scrolls) is a cheap way to victory dance your way towards gaining Spellcasting.

If you have a weapon of holy wrath, curse weapon can't curse it, but you still spend the exp towards spellcasting.

If you manage to successfully blink away from the Lernaean Hydra, do not think that you may as well go back and try and kill it again.

Lost my best character ever (L18 KoBe with boots of levetation and randart amulet of cFly that pwned the rest of the lair and had cleared all but the final level of shoals) to that damn thing.

Didn't know that one. I remember seeing curse armor curse stuff I wasn't wearing, so I assumed curse weapon worked the same.

Some more from my last YASD:

- Don't leave a pile of scrolls on the ground right next to a room that is spewing flame columns. The flames can spread farther and torch all your scrolls that you thought you'd left in a safe place

- Being burdened slows you down and even if you have space between you and a hydra, it can kill you if you start going up stairs, even with a spriggan.

- shadow creatures can summon whole elf armies including deep elf knights.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Dropping potions to protect them from mummy curses is generally a good idea.

It's a bad idea to do so in an ossuary though, at least those wide open ones. Losing a few potions to decay when you kill the mummies is unfortunate, but being forced to retreat from a crowd of mummies you can't kill, leaving all your potions inside? That's just awful.

Dropping them on the gateway before going into the ossuary (or an ice cave) is quite safe (though you gotta be extra careful without potions).

Does the Treasure Trove work the same way? (with timing?)
I've stumbled on it a couple of times, but never had enough gold for the entrance fee.
If I pay the "deposit", i'll have to go look for what the imp wants, and I've always wondered if I don't pay will it stay around?

If the imp locks the trove, it stays.

I think that, in current trunk, troves are permanent but always require a cost in items, not in gold. There was even a trove that required a Horn of Geryon to open :).

I tend to mess up the other diagonal- I try to hit y and get t all the time. If I'm not paying attention, I'll end up double pressing and shouting. That's a very dumb thing to do when you're attempting to sneak up the diagonal.

hyx wrote:ha... and I was wondering if anyone plays ASCII using the hjkl movement keys :)

I've learned to use yubn since switching to a laptop and losing my numpad, but I still hate hjkl. It doesn't affect crawl, but accidentally moving every time I try to (k)ick or (l)oot in nethack is infuriating. ...I need to go in and manually remap or something.

You can (k)ick and (l)oot?

I never knew anything other than ctrl-d and #loot... something new, every day. I play with hjlkyubn because it's what I've always known, and also because I have no numpad on my laptop!

(For the younger members of our community, hjkl are also the original directional movement keys for vi, a text editor once amusingly described by Tom Christiansen as 'an early Roguelike game' :P)

If you ever come down the stairs in Orc:4, find Nikola, and flee back up the stairs (because you are XL 12 and have no rElec) without dying, for Pete's sake, put an Exclusion on the stupid staircase. If you are slightly ADD and play a game over the course of a few days, you will completely forget why you didn't finish Orc, blithely hop down the stairs, and get a very quick Chain Lightning death.
