Traps skill 9 is no guarantee that you won't blunder into a Zot trap on DL 19 and get banished.

I'll add: If you draw a legendary minefield card...
... searching a couple of times isn't guaranteed to find all the traps, even at skill 8.
... the one you step on could well be a trap door
... when you travel back up to the level, remember to steer clear of where you drew the card (legendary minefield + 20 evocations skill has a lot of range, apparently)
... you might very well step on a Zot trap
... which might well banish you.

DO NOT shout in the Orb's Vault to attract that Orb of Fire to your Oklob Farm without getting in its line of sight. Doing the latter is a far safer idea.

A ring of sustain abilities will not in fact prevent an orange crystal statue from reducing your intelligence below zero.

This doesn't seem right to me.

Yeah. Also, even though the grapevine will tell you that having at least 8 of every stat will save you from stat death... it is wrong. It is horribly wrong. Stats can go into the negatives as far as they need to.

it only halves stat loss (rounded down), so stat losses greater than one will continue to drop your stats, just by less. might want to shell out for that wand of disintegration.

Meant to quote not thank - anyway, I was packing a disint wand, and was attempting to charge the horrid thing in order to take it down. What I was lacking was an amulet of clarity: I got confused right off the bat and by the time I got unconfused I was -1 Int. It was only a few turns after that that I "forgot to breathe". And isn't there a potion that brings stats back up? I should have packed one of those in my bag lunch.

quick etymology lesson- necro = death, phage = eat(usually used to describe WHAT something eats) so literally, it means "death eater". in this specific scenario i would take "death" to be synonymous with "decay" and would therefore expect the thing to eat rotting corpses - analogous to the "saprovore" trait some races have.

And I would say 'Necrophage' sounds way cooler than 'Death Eater'. JK Rowling, take note of this.

The really odd thing of course, is that I was disturbed by a monster eating a corpse in a genre where you murder and eat pretty much everything and everyone you come across.

I knew this, and it still bothered me. Thanks, Crawl. It's those little touches that make a difference.

Nah, it isn't the butchering that makes a difference. I'm an old nethacker- I'm used to digging face first into a still warm pile of mostly intact gnome. :p (Though seriously- ew).

I guess it takes the game holding up an unthinking, undead, flesh eating monstrosity as a grinning mirror to yourself to bring the creepiness home.

Back from when stat death was instantaneous when your stat hit 0 or below, 8 is the minimum you need to not get one-shotted by a high-level necromancy miscast (usually ala mega-mummy in the tomb). If you had 8 or more you could have a turn to quaff that restore abilities potion before the next blast. But as you note this is pretty irrelevant now. If you didn't do any necromancy and never go the tomb it was pretty useless information then too.

Ettins do 45 damage per attack, and get two per turn. This means that if they get a double pulse and land 3 hits, your elf is toast.

Monsters shouldn't be able to attack you twice because of energy randomisation.
