If you are stupid enough, you may forgot to breath !

74592 Danakh the Severer (level 15, 108/129 HPs)
Began as a Hill Orc Berserker on July 28, 2011.
Was the Champion of Trog.
Forgot to breathe
... caused by a brain worm
... in The Abyss.
The game lasted 04:23:02 (30692 turns).

In another way : do not try to regen your life in the Abyss on a safe spot with only a brain worm eating your not so useless brain ;)

Angels in Abyss are the reason why not to play undead, at all.

As in, you can't run from them, and you can't blink from them, and Haunt doesn't help against them.

Just because you've equipped an Anti-magic weapon and are using Trog's Hand doesn't mean a Guardian Serpent can't teleport you into the middle of a hoard of nagas, where another Guardian Serpent will teleport you again into another hoard farther into the vault... and, after you finally escape, a lowly naga warrior will spawn with a spear of distortion which teleports you again, back into the vault.

Beware any creature that can warp you into the abyss. kobolds with darts of distortion still have the chance to end the run of a level 10 player, a random pack of gnolls probably does not.

Darts of distortion? Is that an actual thing? The closest I've ever seen are darts of dispersal.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

Vampires at Thristy or less drain health after a successful stab, as long as the mob's corpse can be drained, even if the stab didn't kill them. Works great for tanking Death Yak herds with Invisibility, though unfortunately Vampires can't drain insects...

Edit: After further research, it looks as if the drain is the Vamp's bonus melee attack, like a Minotaur's headbutt, and you can use it even if its not a stab. That being said, it will always drain if you stab something, while it may 'deal no damage' if its normal combat.

Goblins can have a Potion of Berserk Rage on D:1. It hurts.

That's pretty funny. I'm pretty sure it came from that vault in the center bottom, where there were some low-level monsters in a hallway of transparent rock wall that surrounded a large square of green crystal. If that eye of devastation dug out from inside the green crystal, the south part of the map is probably crawling with out-of-depth monsters. Good thing it hasn't seen you; odds are decent you can sneak to the staircase in the northeast corner of the map and leave this level until sometime after Lair, or mid-Vaults to be safe.

Almost 6k turns on D2... I think he tripped the timer.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

I'm not sure, but I think the reason I had so many turns so early was that I searched each square on the perimeter of the vault in the bottom center hoping to get in. I guess I was lucky I didn't find the door.

On a side note: A friend of mine suggested that the Eye of Devastation might have been a shape shifter too. I'm pretty new to this game though, and am not brave enough to return to Dungeon 2 so ¯\(°_o)/¯

Edit: I didn't really understand bobross' remark, so my first paragraph doesn't make much sense. It seems reasonable that I tripped the timer with that many turns, though I didn't think of that because I've never done it before.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

From what I remember reading the timer is 3000 turns. After that you start getting much tougher monsters, if you can kill them then the dungeon just eventually stops spawning monsters on that level.

Found this out the first time I played a mummy and had a catoblepas spawn on D:1 at ~3500 turns.

EDIT: 2nd paragraph under Difficulty to play is where I found it - http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Mummy

If you've just successfully escaped from the abyss after being cast there by an ogre mage, immediately going after the same ogre mage (again) without MR might not be a good idea...

(On the other hand, you might just find the exit after only looking for some 200 turns! Now, maybe third time's the charm?...)

Everybody has to do that 6 or 12 times... :) I have a 'take a break after the abyss' rule. I find the abyss gets me all pumped and going in full run and gun mode, then I get out (or die), go 'whew', put my brain on autopilot, and get abyssed again.

Use stashes. Don't underestimate Zot:5 if you've never been there before. Don't go into Zot:5 after all your scrolls and potions have been burned/freezed. Being surrounded by a golden dragon and a black draconian with 2 hp left is not fun (but possible to survive :) )

Many times they get polymorphed by the eyes into more powerful creatures, and they not only block the polymorphs against you, but they kick ass as well!

Sure, your SpEn can cast a spell and put that ogre to sleep.

But if the ogre wakes up just as you step close to slip in the blade, he can one-shot you for 32 damage. And then who's the dead one?

Different gods take different sacrifices. Duh. I have played virtually all berserkers. My DrMo (first non-zerker I ever got a rune with) was rearranging his stash in the hive when a bee spawned and attacked. I one-shotted it, moved in to sacrifice... and gave my entire pile of permafood to Nemelex along with the corpse.

When transferring your stash from Temple to Lair using autotravel, make sure when heading back to Lair, if you get accidentally stopped next to an open branch (due to hunger or an encounter), confirm that the branch is Lair and not Orc with 30 enemies next to an open and ticking countdown volcano entrance.

Once you've picked your character's weapon types (including "what you'll be moving up to"), ignore weapons of other types, even after detect curse. A distortion weapon you can't use effectively can end your game in the Abyss....

Even though you went into the Labyrinth with 4 meats, 2 breads, and some various fruit... You'll still barely make it through alive, have to melee the minotaur with nothing but a potion of agility on an OpVM due to starvation, then make a mad dash back through the floor crawling with bad guys you can't eat, avoid 2 other bad guys on the floor above, just to die on the door step of the general store that has food for sale...

Casting poison and inner flame on a monster is not always a smart move.
It will survive the next few spells you throw at it with a small amount of HP, comes closer to hug you, to explode in your face >.<

Are you sure the stuff is gone? I seem to remember doing that once in 0.7, and the stuff that got walls dropped on them was shunted to other squares. I did have that moment of panic, though.

Polymorphing an orc high priest seems like a great way to deal with them, until they turn into an orb of eyes and paralyse and blast you.

A DEFE can cast sticky flames at good by level 4. A level 4 DEFE can also be killed from full health by miscasting sticky flames.

The Crusade card from the Deck of Summonings can turn your Nemelex Xobeh worshipper into Orc Jesus. And your followers will even level up.

Corollary - casting Torment from the deck of destruction (or a number of other effects from it) will turn your newly leveled Orc Knight follower into Judas.
