Anyway on giant spore, you can throw anything (dart, rock, dagger, choko...), just use F. Doesn't worth a wand.

If you're a shield user, maybe. But for 2H I think +4,+12 vorpal glaive bests any vanilla bardiche you're likely to get.

There's not much to explain. A bardiche is simply better than a glaive in terms of damage, so any normal bardiche with decent enchantment will beat the Glaive of Prune.

Also vorpal is a bad brand, so you can put an actually decent brand on a bardiche too.

The glaive of prune isn't a bad item though.

Very true.
My point of raising my voice was not this fact, which I and any of the more experienced players know. My point is that newbies, browsing this thread, probably do _not_ know this. Then, a simple "No" with no further explanation is not much of an advice for them.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

I don't see how "No, the glaive of prune is a pretty good glaive, but bardiches are much better than glaives and vorpal is much worse than flaming/freezing" would have been a huge improvement over just "No". I usually try to explain what I say, but this seemed too obvious to bother. Plus if you don't have the exp to get weapon skill up to 26 the glaive of prune might actually be better than most bardiches, because delay 17. So if I start explaining myself I have to write a whole paragraph, which I really didn't feel like at the time. Pointing out that the post above mine was wrong (in most circumstances where you actually might want to use a glaive or bardiche, because that means you probably want 27 weapon skill anyway) seemed better than just leaving it there without comment, so that's what I did.

It certainly would have been an improvement, at least in pointing those who are not so familiar with the game mechanics to the right way. Your "No." could lead to someone going "Why?".
It's nothing personal against you from my side - but sometimes it seems to me that some people on this forum forget they were once newbies as well.
I am not exempt from this behavior, of course. But I do my best to be helpful and explain myself everytime I post. If I do not feel like writing a whole paragraph, I simply write nothing - someone else probably will do so in a better way then I would when not in the mood.
Again, it's nothing personal against you.

Re: I think we learned an important lesson today.

About the Glaive - bardiches are freaking rare. Granted, the purple glaive is just as rare, but on the occasion that you do get it, it's a very good weapon. My case in point: I had a MfBe who was gifted the purple glaive and then an anti-magic bardiche. Anti-magic doesn't add extra damage, and getting a bardiche from Trog at all is rare. Even if I were to find a vanilla bardiche out in the dungeon, I wouldn't have been able to vorpalize it with freezing/flaming because I'm a berserker.

If you're being chased down a one-tile corridor by a group of gnolls armed with polearms, the first one will start stabbing you as soon as he's two tiles away. He will not move closer to you. If you hold your ground and snipe at him with a ranged weapon (or spells), he will continue to stand on that tile and block the next gnoll from being able to reach-stab you.

yeah gnoll groups were already scary for many builds when you come across them, their fairly free reaching made them very dangerous for melee-only starters, or someone who only has a limited amount of casting ability available to them in the early game.

Yep. That's why, when you're a melee build, it sometimes pays to pick up the first sling (and stones/shots) or pile of spears you see. Even if you keep the ranged skills off, it's not too hard to hit most early monsters with one.

Any character that has access to a bazaar or treasure trove is too good to waste, but it's almost worth the idea of drinking poison or shooting wands at oneself in a "safe" portal to imagine the look on someone's face that left their armour and potions outside to free up carrying capacity.

I know the temple can't spawn player ghosts. Do or should troves and bazaars have the same kind of restriction? Should anywhere else?

You can if it's a random blink (but whether you actually manage to is, of course, a matter of luck). And you can turn a controlled blink into a random blink by trying to blink to somewhere you would die (i.e. over deep water for most races). Scrolls of fog work well too, if you're not standing right by her.
