Trying something different.... OgWz

Hoping for general thoughts on this one..
OgWz, not very far in yet... maybe D4.
Just wondering what some of the experienced members here might advise.........
Do you focus spellcasting and conjurations early?
Or dodging and fighting?


Never played this build. Looking for a quick tip.

Play it like a melee character, with a couple of spells. I recommend blink and summon imp. Get an a mace or flail and skill M&F.

OgWz is a fun character but very hard in early game.
i have won OgWz once, but this char was very low win-rate.

though mid and late game is pretty easy, early game is very very hard.
you should use every item you find(sling etc) and always call imp, and if things go bad, you should escape early.

Skill Training
-Call Imp and Blink are priority in this char. train spec and summon and tloc, but more spec.
-if Call Imp and Blink are online(12%), you should turn off magic skill. wait for int+15 at Cheibriados.
-always train fighting and mace. you should wield early club, and switch mace if you find it.
-train throwing and fire sling(crosstraining). throwing is very powerful but unskilled throwing is terrbile.
but if you train throwing, throwing tomahawk is ok.

I wouldn't recommend going Chei...

Basically, if you have bad int and/or bad apts, you don't want to cast spells whose effects depend heavily on spellpower in a normal game. This includes some summons, most hexes, and essentially all conjurations and direct damage dealing spells. Good things to cast include most charms, translocations, necromancy, and some summonings (esp. shadow creatures). If you try to cast these spellpower dependent spells as your go-to source of damage, you'll find your character has bad offense and bad defense through most of the game.

notice that conjurations stays low and the endgame spell list is oriented toward spells that support melee combat, rock throwing, and/or do not depend on spellpower in any important way.

Both Mephitic Cloud and Conjure Flame are castable with only small investment, and both are pretty strong effects. Generally, I'd recommend getting most of the Minor Magic book to a low failure rate and then focus on Fighting, M&F, Armour and Dodging.

What I've done with OgWz in the past is to play it like a melee ogre, except that you want to train a fair amount of spellcasting, and a bit of translocations, conjurations, and charms. With the ogre's great spellcasting apt getting mephitic cloud and conjure flame castable is pretty easy, which trivializes 90% or more of the early game. After that just see what the dungeon gives you for spells, but trying to go heavy on conjurations is always going to be suboptimal on an ogre. That doesn't mean you can't do it, and it doesn't mean it's not fun though.

I got 10 runes with an OgWz of Veh, and ended up dying somewhere in extended, but a 3 rune win shouldn't be terribly difficult.

So, the way I skilled this was my usual lazy way,train M&F, fighting, dodging, and spellcasting. Maybe alternate between conjurations and air to get mephitic online a little faster. Use conjure flame and mephitic cloud liberally to make encounters easy (Block a hallway with the fire, shoot a meph cloud at the enemies behind it, enemies in a cloud will happily walk through more clouds, so even if they don't get confused, they'll march into the fire) Then beat them up when they are in the fire.

Essentially, you're playing this as an OgHu, except you're shooting spells instead of throwing rocks. You could also decide to just use support spells, and throw rocks instead of bothering with conjurations.

I am currently on my 50th attempt to win with OgWz. This particular one (the 46th iteration) should have been a 15-runer, had I known and considered the extraordinarily deleterious effects of dex stat zero (on a mummy zig floor, no less, beefing him up for extended).

Edit: I do manual skills training, starting out only Spellcasting and Conjurations, both *, and I memorize all except Slow from Minor Magic, in this order: Blink (XL2), Call Imp(XL2), Mephitic Cloud (XL3), Repel Missiles (XL3), Conjure Flame(XL5), and then I throw the book away. I start training Fire, Air, and Poison at * after I memorize Meph and Conj Flame, and I train Charms, Summoning and Tloc at + until they reach no more than 2. Eventually, I throw in Fighting, Dodging and Evocations, always at + only, and I never let them get higher than the primary elemental schools. Spellcasting never gets turned off, and Conjurations rarely so. If I find a shield, I'll train that to around 6 usually. I train evo high because I rely on a crystal ball in large, tactical battles I know I wouldn't have enough MP to get through otherwise.
