'Low strength' message

I've just noticed a message when attempting to equip some plate mail:

" Your low strength makes using this armour a lot more difficult."

....on trunk. I can't remember seeing it before (though have not played that much), and thought the standard advice used to be, 'if you aren't a caster or stealthy, equip the heaviest armour you can when you find it'. Is that not the case anymore?

There's a penalty for using heavy armor with low strength. Take the armor's evasion penalty and multiply it by 3; that's how much strength you'll need to avoid the penalty. However, you might want more if you want to avoid suddenly becoming weaker if your strength is drained.

Increased evasion penalty.

What about the "your armor (or shield) prevents you from hitting _____" I always assumed this too was due to low strength, or is this from low armour skill?

It's from evasion penalty, which gets increased a lot if your strength is too low, and is reduced by armor skill.
