My weapon is a +0 dagger of electrocution - have cleared Lair, Orcish Mines, Up to D:14, Fully cleared elven halls but didn't find quickblades. My damage seems to be sorely lacking, not sure where to go.

Try to get "Confusion". Confuse the enemy and then just stab, stab, stab.

i like ensorcelled hibernation. it diminishes in usefulness eventually but it's only a level 2 spell and it works on nearly everything through lair and its branches, orcish mines, and remains useful on some things thereafter, like vault guards/convokers/etc, many sorts of dragons, hydras, deep trolls...

Based on the last stabber I played:

Ensorcelled Hibernation - something wakes while you're sneaking to eviscerate unnoticed? Put it back to short-term sleep, then make sure that the sleep is forever.
Confusion - similar to above, something thinks it has the right to be safe from your chronic backstabbing disorder? This spell removes such silly thoughts.
Invisibility - being invisible, unsurprisingly, makes stabbing awake monsters that lack See Invisible tag rather easy. Mind though that having any monster with the tag in the area can ruin your day very quick. Don't make the mistake of solely relying on this though if you want to be a dedicated stabber: high Stealth allows you to eviscerate those pesky See Invisible guys first, which in turn makes Invisibility a viable option again.

Stuff I haven't tried, but sounds useful:

Sure Blade - Not really necessary, but it's a Hex/Cham buff to help ensure your backstabs hit and makes combat go quicker when running is not an option.
Dazzling Spray - Multi-target stab-enabler combined with irresistiple damage.
Mass Confusion - Somewhat self-explanatory: multi-target confusion. Doubles as escape tool and nice way to deal with large packs of nasties.

Then there's the generic useful stuff like Repel/Deflect Missiles, Blink, Swiftness etc.

EH is nice for a decent part of the pain game, it tapers off not long after lair but can still be useful. Confusion came my go to after that. Mass confusion is nice but doesn't get everyone and it seems like it doesn't have a long effect time. Useful, but I wouldn't go charging into the middle of the fray cause it might wear off and now you're surrounded.

Sure blade was nice but not necessary most of the time. Dazzling spray was nice and did enough damage to make it useful into zot for me, and the blindness was also nice.

I particularly liked discord. You wont see that until maybe vaults though. Sure you aren't "stabbing" but there are such large hordes later that its so much safer to let them tear each other apart.

Stabs always hit (you literallly cannot miss when stabbing, you can fail to stab if they're awake and not-paralyzed, and therefore miss your non-stabbing attack, but you can't miss if you are stabbing), Sure blade doesn't do anything for stabbing at all. What it does do is make your non-stabs hit more often, so you are better at fighting when you're things you can't stab.

I played a ton of melee orientated stabbers and found that you can do just find without spells, in fact it was often easier waiting on that than trying to balance magic use in as well.

Just get a branded shortblade of any type asap (elec, draining, and poison are all good pre-lair tho poison runs out there pretty fast, avoid vampiric as you will likely not do enough damage in the beginning) and try to get it to about +5. Then hang on for an artifact or a QB and if the latter, brand it and enchant it to max asap. You can get a QB with high probability by asking for a weapon with a scroll of acquirement, especially if youve seen the other short blade types already. Oka and Trog will pretty much always gift you one eventually, as well. Ice or even flames works fine on a QB as well.

Get the weapon to min delay first thing, as this requires very little xp. Then get your dodging and stealth up.

Wham bam you can stab all kinds of things before they even know you're there, no need to hit them with spells most of the time. Get your AC as high as you can while you are at it, and you can even stand toe to toe in melee in places like the vaults etc, though you'll never be as robust at this as say a MiFi, so positioning, resource management, and knowing when to get out are paramount.

Confuse is the spell that matters. I'd take confuse over EH every time if I had to choose (you don't, EH is only a lvl 2). I've never run into anything that I couldn't stab down trivially if it was confused, and it has much fewer quirks about usage than EH (duration, mainly, but the double stepdown function kicks in around lair branches, and ice type.)

Everything else is just gravy, and hexes in general are awesome through a 3 rune game. Discord though, killed my yred bone dragons, and that irritated me.

Summons are always good on any character, and they can be particularly helpful on short blade users because of the low tier stabs they set up. Even just using mammals or imps has a small but noticeable impact. Also, there are two good spells that use hexes, summon mana viper and spectral weapon (which isn't technically a summon but works like one). Both of these can be gotten online by focusing just on hexes and without investing much into other magic schools.
