Could use some tips for a troll healer

I've started up a troll healer; it seems pretty easy, but some quick questions/confirm these statements

I want to use a large shield with shield skill 15.

It's worthwhile to train some spellcasting for low level buffs like swiftness/repel missile if you find the spell books.

Should I train str or dex on level up (or int if I'm trying for buff spells)? Is training dodging worth it with my large size and -2 aptitude?

Should I train armor instead, and how heavy/light should my armor be, assuming I do find dragon/troll hide armor I can wear?

Edit: Are transmutations such as spider form/ice form/blade hands a good idea if you can get them castable? Spider isn't too hard to learn but blade hands might be too much for a troll?

1) 15 skill for a large shield is correct.
2) Picking up some Charms is a good idea; with a bit of work, you'll get Haste castable (I have had this by mid-Lair on a TrDK, just goes to show that it isn't hard).
3) Dodging isn't really worth it.
4) Pick INT.
5) Some dragon armour is good; nowadays, mottled is better than swamp if you want the really light stuff for optimal casting, but personally I would prefer fire or pearl. Troll leather isn't very good because it won't even help you regenerate.
6) I wouldn't learn Transmutations. You will have no problem with damage output and enough to put your experience in already. Maybe if you find a good book early, but Charms will be better, probably.

1.) Maybe. I don't see what's wrong with just a *regular* shield.
2.) Yes, but try not to get carried away.

7.) (Bonus advice): If you find this combo too difficult, transfer your troll healer to ADOM.
