Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

So I'm running a DeWi of Vehemut, currently on D:10. All of a sudden, all the corpses of slain creatures have begin disappearing and I don't understand why. Been using animate dead so this really sucks. What happened that caused this?

Also, if anyone has any tips for this current character, I'd greatly appreciate it... I'm not very good at this game :)

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

The corpse disappearing in a puff of smoke message means that the monster was summoned. Did you trigger a shadow trap nearby?

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

When you kill a monster that was summoned, you receive no experience, piety, or other rewards, and they drop no items (including their corpse). You can tell if a monster was summoned by examining it.

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Ah ok, cause it happened like 4 times in a row, yeah I triggered a trap. After 200+ games you would think I would know something like this by now :) Anyway thanks guys.

How's my character look btw? Any suggestions?

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

I'd be focusing training on shields only (to 5), then I'd focus on dodging (only) for a while, and put some stat ups into dexterity.

Identify your consumables.

EDIT: First ID that wand of teleport, then I'd probably ID the potions, starting with largest stacks and working down.

Do I even need much more then 31 INT? Assuming I don't switch out the gear giving me the bonus INT, should I focus mainly on DEX now?

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Your 31 Int is pretty good for the spells currently in your mind, if you buff up the magic skills you will find you can cast most of that from behind a medium armour with little issue.

If you plan to move on to the higher level stuff, 7's, 8's and 9's then you may want more Int yet, depends muchly on your desired final spell loadout and the sort of armour class you want to go with it. Your strength is sufficient to get you to about scale/FireDA if you so desire. Best way to check, head to your stash and try on some differant armours, test fail rates in Ring and Scale.

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Int improves your spellpower, spell success rate, and reduces spell hunger, all of which are also accomplished by your magic schools and the spellcasting skill.

Ultimately, since in any game you can have up to 27 skill levels of magic, that should be more than enough to get most of your spells to low fail rates and hunger even with average int.

(It did take 33 int to get level 9 spells to 1% fail, but a ring of wizardry/vehumet easily compensates)

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Thanks for the input, guys. Don't think I've ever gotten lower then D:12 so hopefully I can keep this guy alive for a few more floors, but I have the strangest feeling that YASD is just around the corner... :)

Couple of other questions: Why are certain items - such as my potions of resistance - colored yellow in my inventory, what does that mean? Ditto for monster names, how come sometimes they come up yellow or red? Is that an indication of their threat level relative to my current level? Or just a threat indicator, period?

Or does it mean something else entirely?

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Color of monster names is relative power yes.

Grey is popcorn
White is slightly tougher popcorn
Yellow is around your own power level
Red is a monster outright 'tougher' than your character
Green for allies, they ought to have a little heart on the sprite too

This scale seems to be based on character XL and I'm guessing here..monster HD. (a couple of monsters stay red all the way to XL27, OoF, ALich) If you skip a nasty red unique and come back 5XL later, he may well have gone yellow.

Consumable Items coloring is a visual guide. Yellow items are generally more useful in critical situations, the heals/cures, various escapes, yellow items. White items are your average potions/scrolls. Purple is a mixed bag, the pot/scroll has some effects that could be considered negative, whether or not purple is worth it depends on your char and situation largely. Red consumables are always bad, never use. Cyan consumables are always good, no amount of dice-rolling will get you a purely bad result (potion bene mut, scroll acquire)

Always good is not synonymous with never purely bad.

Re: Corpse disappears in a puff of smoke?

Well so far so good I guess, I'm in Lair:1 now, barely even explored and I already had several near-death encounters... already kills like 20 yaks, griffin, several crocs and a bunch of other crap, all right near the stairs. I don't recall things being this hard on the first floor... I'm scared to go deeper. But at least I have a small army undead now, should make the rest of this floor a lot easier.

To expand on this, since you're playing tiles, a summoned monster will have a little purple (or red, in some circumstances) circle in the corner of their sprite.

unless you get wild magic and suddenly your bread and butter spells become uncastable and you are more or less fucked if you can't cure it, or horns that make your randart helmet fall off

A perhaps more accurate description of cyan would be "Things that have strategic, rather than tactical, impact and which are intended to be generally beneficial, although not always without consequence or risk"
