epic sad death, question about MR and paralysis

I've been build zig-buster characters lately. The last one died in a way I don't totally understand. Here's what happened:

• It was my second zig, level 27, and it was pan lords
• I thought it would be fine since I tore through the entire zig, including multiple giant mummy levels
• I was paranoid about clouds of chaos, so each turn I made sure I wasn't standing in one
• I was spamming Tornado, Shatter, Fire Storm, and Disc of Storms
• Makhleb was healing me so I was at full health (298 HP)
• My MR was off the charts (MR+++++, i.e. "almost entirely resistant to hostile enchantments")
• Mid-Tornado a Pan Lord named Clint paralyzed me
• The Tornado kept doing damage and Makhleb kept healing me
• But the Tornado ended and I got walloped

So my questions:

• Did Clint cast a spell or use an ability?
• Did it bypass my MR?
• If it didn't bypass my MR, what was the chance of it succeeding?
• Something similar happened to me once with an Eldritch Tentacle; does that bypass MR?

Seems like I need to wear an amulet of stasis if this is remotely possible. Incidentally, I had crazy great mutations, which I picked up very early in the game (i.e. D:2): antennae 1, stinger 2, repulsion field 1, poison breath, clarity, magic resistance 2, electricity resistance

I believe chaos-branded attacks ignore MR when they try to paralyze you. Did he have a chance to hit you in melee?
