Invisibility is a lie

I'm so frustrated right now :x . After multiple failed attempts with a deep elf conjurer build ( dying before level 4) I finally made it to level 6 with a demonspawn conjurer. I thought I was doing really well until I ran into ogre who was giving me troubles so I popped an invincibility potion and made a run for it. The ogre chased me and KILLED ME, WHILE I WAS INVISIBLE. WHAT. THE. FUCK?!!
Anybody have an explanation? Of all creatures that could see and kill me while i'm invisible, it had to be a one eyed baboon??!

If you go invis after a monster has seen you it doesn't work like you want it to.

Monsters will try and track you down.

If you're not stealthy, the noise you're making wandering in the corridors will allow monsters to know where you are, and try to hit tiles where they think you are...

It's just fair : you do the same with monsters...

No you don't, and if you think otherwise then you haven't fought Maurice without SInv.

Invisibility is basically a thing for stabbing, the bane of the beam-throwing (ranged is beams too!) monster and +25% EV. (And none of these things if the monster in question can see invisible.)
Monsters still know exactly where you are because crawl is not nethack or something, I don't know.
(and exactly why invisibility isn't more or less the same as in nethack is a Good Question)

I did. Of course I didn't pretend it was optimal, but who hasn't tried to get the last hits on some invisible target (even Maurice).

Moreover, some situations (ie corridor) allow "easy" time against invisible monsters...

About Maurice, I think the problem is harder because of him blinking around, so you don't know where he is...

Invis is hilarious versus draconian packs. So much friendly fire.

Except monsters will still go after you even if you blink and you can't follow Maurice after he blinked because you don't know where the fuck he is.

Re: Invisibility is a lie

You know how when a monster turns invisible you can still see a disturbance?

Monsters can get that too.

Intelligent monsters are also a little better at finding you too.

Re: Invisibility is a lie

Even on an uncannily stealthy octopode of dith, when I went invis in sight of some non-see invis enemies, they kept up with me and tracked me perfectly. In my experience, if you go invis after a monster sees you, it's pretty unlikely that they'll make a wrong move following you, although it certainly does happen sometimes.

Invis does cause monsters to make some strange decisions regarding friendly fire though. Enemies like centaurs will try to fire through their allies to hit where they think you are, but if you're visible, they won't fire through allies.

Monster intelligence is a big part of it. Mindless undead, bugs, and animals will pretty reliably wander around a bit if you're trying to run away while invisible.

I have a soft spot in my heart for octopodes of dith. I think the problem may be that you were in melee range while invisible. If you get out of melee range with loads of stealth they will forget about you. Or maybe you were just unlucky.

Re: Invisibility is a lie

It's quite possible I was unlucky, I'm basing this on a pretty small sample size.

On the subject of Octopodes of dith.... I just hate octopodes. I really want to win with one so I can have the legendary offline great player award, but they're so frustrating. I've gotten 2 to the depths, and died there. I got a very promising one killed in snake because I autoexplored into a shock serpent. It got two double zaps on me in one turn when I tried to walk away, and that was that...

Re: Invisibility is a lie

Shoals aren't instawin with invisibility as they used to be some versions ago. Water nymphs and merfolk aquamancer can see invisible now. Invisibility is of course great for all lair branches except snake pit.
If you are invisible but in melee range of a monster it will usually chase you, but if you have at least 1 tile distance it is extremely easy to lose him in a just few moves (stealth and moving around obstacles helps).
