Then this makes it doubly stupid that I tried to drink a potion of cure wounds vice blinking away from that hydra. (It was on a flame spot and would have died/tried to flee in a round, thought I could make it).

It's been that way for awhile.

Does attacking with a vampiric weapon only heal health, or does it also satiate hunger?
If not, would it be nifty if, while attacking with a vampiric weapon at full health, you lost hunger instead, or is that too much?

I ask this from the viewpoint of a DDNE who quaff id'd his only potion of cure mutation, then got hit 3x by a wand of polymorph and now has -2 Str and a fast metabolism and has searched 15 levels since with no cure mutation potion to be found and am on negligible permafood and just found an axe of vampirism.

Vampiric weapons increase your satiation level by a small amount when used, iirc.

Since Deep Dwarves cannot regenerate mana when using a spirit shield (as it ties mana to health and neither regenerate, making spirit shield useless to deep dwarves; loved finding that furry hat for berserkers, thanks for nothing) does sickness prevent mana regeneration if wearing a spirit shield? If not, based on the experience with deep dwarves, shouldn't it?

It depends on what you want to do with it. Blowguns use throwing skill, and the top-end paralysis and sleep needles check your throwing skill against the enemy hit die. At 27 throwing skill, you can successfully paralyze Cerebov, switch to a holy wrath dagger, and stab him to death before he recovers.

On the other hand, if you're not planning to make throwing your primary means of ranged combat, the maximum useful level is going to be 0.

So the needles work on every creature?? Dang, I never thought about that! Thanks.

Sometimes, when I look for a certain item description there, I also read a few adjacent entries. The "needlestab" entry is not too far from "needles of sickness" and is much more informative.

But, actually, do needles affect the undead?

Can harpies steal food that's on the ground? What if another creature (like, oh, you) is standing on it?

The last few times I've run into harpies, I've dropped my food and fought them without moving from that tile, and they can't seem to get to it. But it'd be nice to have that verified!

Sickness doesn't prevent mana regeneration when wearing guardian spirit.

Also, guardian spirit is not useless for deep dwarves. Just get a staff of channeling.

Just got my staff of Wucad Mu, but I have yet to find Spirit shield in this game (as opposed to that Hat of the Bear or whatever last game, seriously, WTF). Rocking a robe of levitation and an amulet of controlled flight, and with 145HP so... eh.

I'm new to Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. I read alot about trunk, some short of words that I can't remember now. Are there other versions of DC:SS? Are there mods? Some tweaked version?
And what is the best way to get in to modding? If it is possible?

Cheers :]

There is a stable version, and a development version. The later is called trunk, it gets updated very regularly, but can contain new bugs or untested features (like the new race, octopodes) which may have to be balanced.

There are no mods, and i guess the code base does not allow easy modification short of rewriting the code.

Ah I see, I guess its best to stick to the stable for a new player then.
Besides modding are there any "must-have" tweaks that's good? I read something about Macros how useful are they?
I heard that you could change the message text colours like have Hit flavour text in one colour and Miss flavor text in another, I looked throught the option_guide.txt but I didn't really understand how to fix it still.
I've only gotten to L:1 and I'm close to 100 deaths any tips are welcome.

The option is message_colour. You can see examples of how to use it in settings/messages.txt. Regarding mods, since it's open source you can make any change you want to the code and compile it yourself. You can also use lua scripts. Some players have written bots in lua.

I made a graphical mod. Since that's just editing the tiles; and I wanted to play a Drakahn from my D&D setting. Same post has my excel sheet of things I've learnt from Crawl 0.8. See my blog.

1) does int affect the amount of MP? - need a few MP for abilities by not interested in spell casting.

2) if you start off as a non spell caster roughly how many scrolls does it take to learn spellcasting 1.

(1) spellcasting and invocations affect MP. you get the higher of spellcasting/4 or invocations/6. there are also rings and staves of power.

(2) from the bots: "it will take (12 to 25) * (10 / int) * (2^(-apt/4)) scrolls, more if you don't have a full enough xp pool"

yes, by editing the config file. for instance:

  Code:
runrest_stop_message = Your transformation is almost over
runrest_ignore_message = grinding sound
force_more_message = You are starting to lose your buoyancy

check the readme files for more goodness, or if you're lazy just check out some server RC files and copy whatever strikes your fancy.

This one isn't necessary anymore. You'll get the more prompt automatically and only when it's actually dangerous.

In 0.8, it creates a worthless shield unless you already have shield skills, and that shield vanishes if any fire based attack gets near your. This includes you casting evaporate, I think.

In trunk, the shield effectiveness is based on magic skills or spellpower or something other than shield skill, so it's better. The duration is longer, and the duration is only reduced by fire instead of eliminated. I haven't found the spell and used it, though, so I can't say if it is useful.

Yes to duration boost and better resilience to fire. However, the shield stat hasn't been changed still depends on both ice and shields. The idea is that the ice skill gives the base stat for the shield, and you can boost it further by training the shields skill. But it's not necessary, the spell is balanced to be effective at low level shields skill.

But wait. This troll has eaten thousands of chunks and got sick only once -- from the chick it ate right after wearing a amulet of the gourmand. Also, in 0.9 trolls have the gourmand resistance. (It's displayed in place of saprovore?) This suggests to me a bug whereby the gourmand resistance is temporarily removed from trolls after wearing an amulet of the gourmand. Usually when I see a bug it's user error. What am I missing?

The gourmand mutation doesn't protect from contaminated chunks. Only saprovore and the amulet do. Trolls have intrinsic gourmand, but they also have saprovore 2. You have only one chance in 45 to get sick with saprovore 2, instead of 1 in 3. The fact that you didn't get sick before putting on the amulet is just a coincidence. Also, troll's diet haven't changed in 0.9. It's been like that for a while.
