How much Armor/Shield skill is required to negate casting penalties?

I assume it is higher based on the armor/shield being used, but I'd like to know or see a chart.

This is for shields (from the bots):

You need 5/15/25 skill to eliminate speed, damage, and casting penalties for bucklers/shields/large shields for normal races, 7/21/- for kobolds and halflings, 9/-/- for spriggans, 3/9/15 for nagas and centaurs, -/9/15 for trolls and ogres.

Check this chart (there's several tabs).

The spellcasting penalty is 25 * (AEVP + ASP) - 20. AEVP is Adjusted Evasion Penalty (body armour) and ASP is Adjusted Shield Penalty. You need skill level 9 to nullify the leather armour penalty and 27 for ring mail. Heavier armours always have a penalty. For shields, assuming normal size, you need 1 for buckler, 11 for normal and 21 for large shield.

Does a buckler only train shields up to the level that it removes the penalty, or does it keep training regardless? I have a very cool normal Shield of Reflection but it totally f's up my LRD.

Yes, it keeps training. The nice thing about Shields is that it creates a positive feedback loop. You train Shields by successfully blocking, and raising your Shields skill raises your SH stat, which increases your chances of a successful block...

Bucklers will train shields so long as you have xp and block stuff. They don't stop training once you hit the penalty elimination level. You just stop victory dancing shields at that point. ;)

Edit: gah, ninja-ed!

Evasion creates a feedback loop too. The problem is when you're trying to train one, and the other gets in the way. Evasion based characters can have real trouble victory dancing shields at all if it takes you a while to find your first buckler.

by "Evasion" do you mean Dodging skill?

separate question - how much should I push up my Slings skill to reach min delay? does the skill just affect delay or will it add to damage as well?

Does the Robe of the ArchMagi still take away 75% of XP (In 0.9)?

The description of the item in the game doesn't say anything about reduced XP

Thanks!

The formula for launcher speed isn't as simple as melee weapons because it also take stats into account. Check your attack speed with @ and once you reach "quite fast" you're at min delay (or almost). Do it in wizmode if you want to see precise numbers. The skill also affects damage a bit, but it's unnoticeable. For launchers other than slings, a higher skill also helps offsetting the speed penalty from a shield.

I just found portal to the treasure trowe but it asks me for a +6 demon whip. I read on wiki that you can pay it 2k gold instead. How to do it?

You can't. It used to be you bought into troves with gold. Then for a while you could use gold if you could afford it, or give an item otherwise. Now they're items only.

But you rarely have the needed item, so most of the time those portals will just disappear...

The portals / troves that require a specific item DO NOT disappear anymore. Go get a demon whip and enchant the bejeezus out of it.

Magic Resistance, maybe?

1) Necromutation
2) Worship Jivya or Zin
3) Can remove some effects via Helix/Potion/Elixir cards, and various potions/wands of healing.

I believe the glow itself is reduced when it gives you a mutation (but not positive on this.)

Incidentally, this is one way in which steam draconian breath is not as good as evaporating a potion of water. You can self-target with evaporate.

I'm playing an air elementalist high elf of sif muna. I lucked out and found a book of power for mystic blast. Sif just gifted me a book with throw icicle which I can cast at very good. I've got about 11 on spellcasting, conjuration, and air magic, but zero ice magic. Is throw icicle a better level 4 nuke? Is it worth training up ice magic for throw icicle?

I read somewhere the result of this but I want to confirm:

If you see the altar with Trog and the burning spellbook, if you can apport the book before it is burnt, is it a useful book, or does it just explode anyway?

You can self-target draconian breath too, but since it's a beam and not an explosion, it won't do anything good. It seems to be harder to use it for blocking LOS anyway.

About as much as a woodchuck would chuck wood if... No wait. Between 5% and 15% of the amount of XP needed to reach next level.

Draining a monster reduces its max HP and sometimes its HD. This depends on the power of the draining attack. Can't tell how the XP is affected, sorry.

Yes, worse for LOS blocking in open areas, but better in tunnels because the entire tunnel gets steamy. So it's good for escaping.

Steam draconian breath seems to produce more squares of fog, and they seem to last longer. Maybe my evaporate spell power was low, or maybe I'm wrong.

Either way, the thank functionality is not subject to moderator modification. Your thanks, once given, cannot be reclaimed, rescinded, or revoked. So... show your gratitude with care?

On topic:

Another advantage the spell has is that it can be trained down to hungerless, and cast repeatedly. The ability will always have a hunger cost, and a breath time out.

Question: When you get the message "Partly explored, can't reach some items and places", is there a way to autotravel to those items and places? In e.g. Lair it can be difficult to find those little corners.

I've always assumed it meant that for conjurators, after the conjurations books were given, you get the summoning books, and vice versa for summoners. If he could give any book that would be stepping on Sif Muna's territory.

What are the best races for casters who also don't like to die? Anything else good to know on good caster survivability? My best character was a merfolk enchanter, but that was in 0.7 and supposedly they got nerfed. Otherwise I've had decent success with high elves, nagas, and kenkus. It just gets frustrating to be doing well and then have to start over again ): I'm left to ask if it was just a stupid mistake or if I can reasonably change something about my build.

Deep Dwarf Necromancers work well if you can make it to Vampiric Draining.

I found binding the spells (using =, then s) as follows works best:
a - Animate Skeleton
s - Animate Zombies or whatever it's called
z - Vampric Draining
x - Pain
c - Dispel Undead

You need 3 times the evasion penalty. So 27 for GDA.

I have never seen such a thing (mostly because I am relatively new to this) but as far as I know, the zot traps use the same syntax as all other traps. Monsters trigger them even if you are not around.

Comment from the source:
// Zot traps are out to get *the player*! Hostile monsters
// benefit and friendly monsters suffer. Such is life.

Friendly monsters will suffer the effect, even if out of sight.
Nothing happen when hostile monsters step on the trap out of LOS (appart from the message). When in LOS, the effect is applied to you with 1/5 chance (or nothing happen).
