Someone please enlighten me on Tiamat's new Dragonskin Cloak. So, it's basically a rF+ rC+ rElec rAcid rPois cloak, but with 50% chance to function?

Made it in Wizmode, it appears to be just a +4 randart cloak. Is it supposed to take on a resistance when you're hit by that element? I can't figure out if there's something special about it.

Draconians with shields confuse me. They can't wear bucklers, but they're considered "normal" sized for most things I think... so... do they use the normal size shield penalty or the large size shield penalty? I.e., will 15 in shields negate a large shield or a normal one?

How does paying tithes with Zin work in Trunk? I notice I'm paying a tithe each time I pick up a pile of gold, but can I still pray at the altar to donate a lot of gold at once?

No. Regrettably, you cannot train down the hunger costs of anything that shows up on the "a" screen- invocations, evocations, racial abilities or mutations.

Does Intelligence influence on hunger one gets from rod spells? Or is Evocations the only safe investment?

Re: The 'Questions too small to need their own thread' threa

...I'm tempted to follow the one word answer trend, but I have more than one answer so that's difficult. Plus, I'm pretty much terminally garrulous.

Wands work, especially fire or cold combined with water in the swamp to make clouds for more damage, but they will run out on you eventually. If you encounter one outside the swamps, lightning multizaps are your best friend.

Gods can work, and somewhat more reliably than wands because they're a renewable resource. Trog's a possibility- Brothers in Arms the hydra to death. You can even overwhelm the head regrowing and healing with beserking when get far enough along the power curve (as in, almost certainly not when you first see a hydra). Nemelex can work wonderfully, especially as an unarmed troll has lots of stuff to sacrifice. Mahhleb demons or destruction, Lucy's banishent, or even Yred's gifted minions in the right circumstances.

Regrettably, trolls have horrible aptitudes in ranged attacks and casting, meaning picking up a blow or sling of flaming or taking a magic option are more difficult.

Well, if you leave swamp:5 and lair:8 (which together seem to contain 80% of the hydras in the whole game), for later (level 18-20), you can actually berserk them to death. This is especially true if you end up in some sort of dragon armour. Even further, you're almost guaranteed to survive if you wand a bit and then zerk. Just keep in mind, post-zerk in swamp 5 can get you killed since hydras move really fast in water.

A short sword or sabre of flaming is the most effective weapon against hydrae. No need to berserk even. Damage drops for each head that you cut and cauterize. ;) Good advice for a Skald that begins with a Fire Brand containing spellbook.

I've started trying to play a TrMo of Nemelex. When I draw from a deck of Summoning there seems to be about a 50% chance of the summoned creatures being hostile. What reduces the chance of the summons being hostile? Do I need higher Evocations?

Plain decks of summoning are quite bad. The problem is lack of Card power.

Yeah, evocations and piety. It's useful to burn through those plain decks so you get more piety and thus better decks. Just make sure you're a decent level before drawing em all, plain decks can be lethal (though nothing a troll shouldn't be able to handle). Personally, I ignore Nemelex until I can triple draw.

Edit: Also my own question: I butchered xtahua and got a dragon hide {Xtahua}. Is this special or is it just inscribed for the coolness of wearing a dead unique's hide?

Has Makhleb's gain health from killing been changed in trunk? I've got 1 star of piety and received the message "you now gain power from killing," but since then have cleared an entire level, and got Makhleb's second power, but have yet to regain a single HP.

Xtahua's hide is not special in any way.

Makhleb's gain health has been changed: you no longer gain MP from killing, and gain more HP than in 0.9. No idea why you aren't getting healed.

Makhleb's healing only happens if random2(piety)>30 (that means the chance is (piety-30)/200). The hp gain has been improved in trunk: HD - 1 + 1d(HD)

I tried peeking in the source, all I found was that if name.empty() is true it displays "That's a silly name" but I couldn't find the definition of name.empty(). (I could have if I'd cared enough, I imagine, BUT)

Is blade hands considered a short/long blade for the purpose of stabbing? I'd love to play a confusing touch-blade hands stabby character.

Blade Hands is unarmed combat. Unarmed combat doesn't get a very good stabbing modifier, even if you have sharp parts on your anatomy.

This is because CON is a special device name under DOS/Windows (used to refer to the console) and cannot be used for a file name. You will get the same result using NUL or LPT1. I suspect on Linux you can use those names and will get the "silly name" if it contains a forwards slash.

Plain decks of summoning are quite bad. The problem is lack of Card power.
Most Plain summoning cards create monsters that are friendly 75% of the time. Usually you can deal with an hostile monster by simply drawing more, either you get Crusade which sends the trouble makers back where the came from, or you draw more monsters that are 75% friendly and end up with much more allies than enemies. However, I have seen decks where all the monsters were hostiles, down to the last card when the deck vanished.

Summoning is quite safe because summoning is its own solution, but you can get massively unlucky and then ...

Thankfully, none of the higher power cards will be a problem. The Herd is the only one that can create hostile monsters when it's used beyond power level 0, but even in that case they'll be lost in the large group of allied ones. So once you get Ornate/Legendary decks and enough Evo+Piety to reliably get the higher power level cards, summoning decks are completely safe.

my trunk, early game HuTr of Chei just found an artifact quarterstaff (+3,+6, flame, +Lev, rN+). (UC is lvl 4, Transmute is lvl 5) How does this weapon stack up against blade hands or later transmutations? I could conceivably abandon transmute at this point and start training summoning or conjuration, if this weapon is good enough.

I took a look at the weapon lab but I didn't see an option for blade hands.

Eh, it'd be a good starting weapon if you were planning on going staves, but I wouldn't consider it good enough to change your character's build. Transmutations also has a lot going for it besides simple unarmed damage boosts.

Not sure what you mean by the second part. Blade hands is a just spell in your starting book that functions in a manner similar to your other shapeshifting abilities except that it only affects your hands.

It look like to work like the spiky mutation of the DS.
I don't know the math, but anytime an enemy miss you, you have a chance to retaliate.
I don't know if the % or the amount of hit point is influenced by skills (unarmed, fighting) level or xp level or even if it works when you wear a hat.
Anyway, for what I've seen, if you go for full plate (low ev) you will barely retaliate anything, if you go ev, you can nearly kill any rats without attacking them.
I find it mostly useful when surrounded by enemies or to soften up low priority targets (like orcs when there it is an orc priest).
So after cleaning the orc and the lair, it become mostly anecdotal.
I wonder if you can retaliate multiple time an hydra.

On a successful dodge you have a (str+dex)% chance of doing an aux headbutt attack on your attacker.

There's a chance for holies to turn neutral (not friendly), but it depends on your piety. At high piety I think it's guaranteed? It's sort of weird though, there have been suggestions to just make all holies neutral while you're worshipping a good god and I sort of agree.

greepish wrote:I heard mention that you can do stuff like write some text somewhere to make auto-explore instant. Is there a list of these kinda of options, and if you are playing on a server, where do you write them?

"travel_delay = -1" makes travel and autoexplore instant. You can find descriptions of all the options in docs/options_guide.txt (there's a daunting amount of them, though), and if you're playing on a server you press 'T' or '1' or whatever to select which version you're playing and then 'o' to edit options, and enter it somewhere there. If you're playing webtiles there's a little "edit rc" link next to each version in the top-left.

When I was spectating one player whose adventurer was worshipping The Shining One, Mennas refused to salute him on Crypt:last_level with, say, no less than four piety stars. I think he had either five or max piety stars.
