Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

I think I there was thread a while ago where this was discussed. I cannot find it. With my last serious melee character recently I tried the old "teleport to one corner" tactics. And died soon, because I didn't have enough breathing space to rest. Stair dancing is obviously out, too. So how does one do it?

This character will finish Depths soon and then there's only Vault 5. From my last painful experience there, I wonder whether this char is actually ready. Though, I certainly don't like the idea of xp-farming in elves or crypt or so.

Please advise, because I feel that I'm strategically stuck in this part of the game in general.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Well, it's kind of hard, so you want to be pretty strong (which you are) and fight in a nice place. I like going in hasted and with cTele, reading mapping, then deciding what to do. You could teleport to the outer ring near the corner of the nicest quadrant right away. Or just move to the side near that same quadrant, kill some vault guards and stuff, and teleport near the corner only when something unpleasant shows up. You could even stairdance for a while, then teleport when the stairs get locked. Having some scrolls of blinking is nice.

Also you want to learn some charms if you can. Mostly RMsl or DMsl if you have it (you have wizardry and can maybe train a little bit of air), and probably swiftness.

Vaults 5 strategy got a lot less static with the open corners, so just roll with the punches and use your cTele if things get unpleasant. Don't wait until you take much damage. Once you clear a quadrant you can use it as a resting place. If you have some cure mutation potions somewhere you don't have to worry at all about a little contamination from overextending haste or hasted teleports. If you don't, you might want to be careful, but still, better mutated than dead.

How do you decide which is the nicest quadrant? The one with the most choke points?

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Main point of "XP-farming" in Crypt and Elf is to get more MR (intrinsic MR from XL helps too), source of rElec and consumables. Vaults 5 is awful when you have low MR and/or no rElec, even for characters with decent AC/EV/HP.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

I don't actually have that much experience with the new Vaults:5, so I'm hesistant to give very specific advice. I like quadrants with a bunch of solid walls near the corner because they help keep stuff from wandering out by inhibiting noise and restricting movement. Also once you have gotten rid of the monsters in sight and want to actually clear the quadrant walls provide chokepoints or corners to make this easier, and still inhibit noise. Also you can try to develop some kind of intuition for where in the quadrant monsters are most likely to be placed and try to pick a place with few monsters near the corner, but this just comes with experience.

If you're desperate and don't mind spoiling the surprise you could look up the vault definition.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Oh, also teleporting right to a corner is probably bad. I think there are usually some hard monsters there. It's better to teleport to the outer ring near a corner, but not right to the quadrant entrance. Again, disclaimer: I don't have that much experience with the new layout, so if someone knows otherwise please correct me.

I agree about MR - but not so sure about rElec; permanent sources are so rare that it doesn't seem worth taking a risk that is almost as great as V:5 in an attempt to get it. I'd say that (since the removal of the Insulation spell) less than 10% of my characters that reach V:5 have had rElec from an item and I've rarely found I've needed to quaff resistance specifically for rElec.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Besides cTele, it's also viable to blink past the initial welcoming crew, run most of the way down one of the corridors, kill off whatever follows you, then make your way to one of the corners. It works better with haste and fog.

I think Elf 3 is much easier than Vaults 5, I usually do the former even before entering Depths/Vaults. Maybe I was just unlucky but several Titans really ruined one of my last games on Vaults 5 when they got near stairs and there were no hatches/shafts on Vaults 4.

This works well. Not only does it clear a large amount of the welcoming party, it will also draw much of the attention to the center, from which you are about to teleport away from.

Also if the stairs get locked, prioritize on killing the warden that locked them. If there are more than one in LOS, you can pull them all to one of the corridors, kill the one that locked the stairs and then tp back and climb up. You can also continue to stair dance after this, at least until the next lock down. Killing off the wardens asap will save you much trouble. Immolation can do this very effectively and spectacularly.

Scrolls of fear are quite useful for separating the welcoming guards so you can fight a few at a time. Also, the OP is following Zin, so Sanctuary would probably make a good panic button.

So why is stair dancing out? Or I guess a better question is why has your character not developed ways to deal with spellcasters through screens?

Wardens are actually pretty beefy, so killing them quickly at range, possibly without clear line of fire, is not that easy. Certainly not impossible, but in a typical stairdancing situation I would probably prefer teleporting away and spending the waiting time trying to minimize the damage I take to killing the warden with several wand blasts and possibly ending up too damaged to risk using the stairs. It really depends on the exact situation of course.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Typically what I do is to go down the stairs, and take stock of what's around. If there's a warden, stairdancing is out, but there's a good chance there won't be. If there's no warden, I stairdance as much as possible of the welcoming party. Once you thin it out a bit, you can actually get to any wardens that appear, so you can basically stairdance until stuff stops coming at you on the stairs.

If stairdancing isn't an option, simply running through a gap and down one of the hallways is another option. If you can haste, all the better, but even if not you'll probably lose a few pursuers as you run down the hallway. At some point you have to stand your ground and start killing guys, tactically retreating as necessary to avoid being surrounded. Eventually, you clear a path back to the stairs, and can handle it like any other super dangerous rune level.

Teleporting is a good option too, as long as you can do a few teleports if you land in a bad spot.

Another option is if you don't like the looks of the welcoming party, just go back up the stairs and do something else. You don't HAVE to clear vaults at all, but even if you do, you don't have to do it right away. And when you finally come back there's a decent chance the party will have dispersed somewhat. Of course, there's no guarantee you can go back up the stairs after the first time, so if you go back down, be prepared to be stuck down there till you kill some wardens.

Stair dancing almost always works for me, to be honest, but if the initial setup of the ambush has wardens you'll have to find another method.

EDIT: Yeah, like others have said, if you get marked, you want to get out of there ASAP. Being marked anywhere sucks. Being marked on V5 is usually a death sentence if you can't get out of V5. This is the time to use those potions of cancellation if you have them, and MR is very important here.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Pretty sure it was my thread.

Haste/swiftness (must have), agility and might (why not if you have them) go down and read a scroll of fear. Then walk in the direction of the least resistance, keeping an eye out for heavy hitters or monsters with special attacks you dont want to deal with in a crowd. Once you get to the edge, immediately walk half way to a corner (pick whichever side you are closest to) and wipe out any thing that followed you that far. Dont fight near a corner yet.

Once there, make your way all the way around the outer ring, clearing it out as you go, always fighting at the midpoints between the corners and the main cross hallways. Then lure guys out of each of the corners and main hallways, and after a while, pick a quadrant you have already killed the most from, and clear it. Then clear the center of stragglers and finally the remaining quadrants. Obviously never fight near the black, always drag guys back to safer, previously cleared sections with minimal LoS.

Would add that you need to not get marked if at all possible, and if you do, you had better get to the stairs in a damned hurry.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Stairdancing is ok if you have a good plan for if it goes wrong. I don't personally like it (it has a decent potential to go wrong, about on-par with the other options that don't involve ctele) but with the v:5 open corners you end up with a selection of not-great options so whatever you pick is going to have some problems.

If you have ctele then just go down, get outside the vault guards somehow, lure them down one hallway and then ctele to somewhere that looks safe. Since monsters lose track of you when you teleport this is pretty much failproof unless you get marked (don't get marked).

Otherwise what has been suggested above is fine. Use consumables, since v:5 is kind of the exact situation you want consumables for in the first place. Scrolls of summoning, lamps of fire, god abilities, etc. are all very good. Potions of cancellation remove mark, so if you have any and get marked then use them.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Another thing that I've found is useful when planning to stairdance (or even considering any strategy where at some point you might be retreating up the stairs with enemies next to you) is to learn animate skeleton (most characters will have found it by then, and as long as you're not worshipping Trog or a good god it's not too hard to learn, especially since it doesn't matter if you can cast it reliably because you'll be casting it out of combat), and summon a small skeleton army on Vaults 4. That way, any time you retreat up the stairs with 8 Vault Guards following you or whatever, your skeletons will blocks some of them off and scatter them a bit, and help you kill them. But even then, as others have said, if you're going to stairdance, you need a plan for if a warden shows up.

I'm also a big fan of using immolation. I usually don't even teleport after. If I have a ton of rF, I'll sometimes just immolate the guards, blow them all up, and then see what happens and react accordingly. It attracts a lot of attention, but you've got a lot of fire clouds damaging anything that comes to you, you can retreat up the stairs if anything nasty that's not a warden comes to check out the noise, and you usually have clear Line of Fire to wardens so you can take them out with any ranged attack, not just smite-targeted or piercing ones.

Alternatively, if you've got good ranged attacks, you can read immolation, quaff (or cast) haste, then use cBlink/?blinking to teleport outside the ambush into one of the hallways. Get a bit of distance, and then start killing the wardens and let the chain reaction to start. You'll have a wall of fire protecting you from anything that comes to investigate the noise, and a character with a strong ranged attack can usually kill enemies as they come through the fire pretty easily, in my experience. There will be some enemies who come from behind, but usually not too many, you just want to make sure you're ready for that.

Doesn't Alistair's still work? Even if it is only for a few turns, you will have enough MP for several casts and if you disable the vault warden long enough you can get to him and drop him.

Just pure melee is not the best strat, even if you are mad strong and can drop dudes in two turns. Immolate to start things off works fine, and you can melee the rest carefully, but having summons or magic will greatly help you out. You're practically fighting a war down there.

I would also wear the other pair of boots, you'll be facing quite a bit of elemental damage.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

there are a few metagame issues with your character imo:

1. switch to the arte boots with rf relec rpois, it's good to have at least 1 rank of rf,rc,relec if you can so as to avoid getting killed from like 80+ hp from a high damage bolt.
2. wear the ring of rC, and ring of EV+4, you can just swap out to ctele if needed later
3. you should probably take more dexterity on level ups - it seems you only took like 3 dex (or got it randomly), 25 str is overkill unless you want to wear GDA, so your evasion is lower than it could be.
4. You really want MR+++ in V:5 in some way or you will be marked a whole lot, if you get marked just ctele out and wait it off upstairs.
5. with all the xp in charms you should at least try to cast rmsl, spectral weapon, swiftness, etc. along with haste, unfortunately you can't cast regen due to Zin but at least you can use sanctuary.

strategy-wise your best options imo are to map the level and ctele to a corner/outside rim (you will want to pick the quadrant that is the least open) or use ?fear and run hasted to the rim and fight the welcome party there, this approach works best with lamp of fire. you may want to use !might + !agil at this point so as to kill everything quickly, since other things will be coming to investigate. you can also just stair dance until a warden comes onscreen and then try to make your way to the rim, so that there are less wandering vault guards coming to find you later i prefer to clear least open quadrants -> most open. for clearing, i like to work from the outside rim of the floor back towards the center so that i can use the removed corners on the subvaults. the main enemies you need to be concerned with imo are vault humans (use curare on convokers when they start to recall, provided Zin dosen't hate it (i'm not sure), /para or something on sents or kill them when they don't have LoF on you somehow), things that can paralyze you if your MR is bad, and ancient lichs. everything else mostly just hits hard but isn't otherwise notable if you have all resists.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Imho there's 4 general categories of vault:5 entrance stratigies:

1) stairdance
2) controlled teleport
3) teleport
4) fear, blink or otherwise take off on a run to the outside

I consider 3 and 4 to be inferior, 2 is decent, but I prefer 1 in most cases. The big problem with stair dancing is vault wardens, the big problems with fear/blink & run or teleport strategies is mark. Fear/blink & run or teleport also tends to put you in a slightly higher mob density, although it can vary based on circumstances.

The biggest reason why stairdancing is the best choice though is because it's easier to abandon stairdancing and go to teleport than the other way around. If you teleport away, get marked and swarmed, it's harder to get back to the stairs (Ctele makes this return trip more likely, although still tricky). You really can't survive a mark, and the effects of mark can easily last dozens or hundreds of turns (after the mark ends, if you still have a swarm next to you, you're still dealing with the consequences). A vault warden sealing stairs tends to only last about 5-10 turns, and if you kill the warden, it ends immediately. It's not impossible to just enter V:5 and clear out the entire welcoming party without leaving V:5 if you have some form of aoe available - slouch is the obvious easy way, but freezing cloud and other aoe can work. I wouldn't try to stay around fighting instead of stairdancing - this is just a backup option for powerful characters if the stairs get sealed. As much fun as slouching the wardens is, saving the piety when it's safe to stairdance them is better in the long term, you might need the piety very soon.

I tend to play melee characters who have high defenses and can handle tanking vault wardens for several turns if I have to, so that does make #1 more attractive. I could see mages preferring #2, but I'd be afraid of running out of mana with no place to rest (sif or CBoE might fix this problem).

5) Use shaft to enter V5. It's my default strategy for melee characters. More often than not I land in a good place. And if I do land in a bad place, I still can use teleport/fear/whatever.

Sometimes I find being marked can be a good thing in a very small number of situations. If you can handle the onslaught (like with Makhleb) and you are in a great location to fight, you can get a lot of the level to come to you rather than having to deal with them in less ideal locations. Granted this is extremely rare, and in 99% of situations, being marked on V:5 is really bad.

I used this idea in Zot 5. Hasted, stepped into an alarm trap and ran to stairs. IT's much easier when all those Orbs of Fire and Ancient Liches get out of quadrants and you can fight them near stairs.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

V5 is one of my favorite parts of the game. I love finding interesting ways to take care of it. I'm sure a few of these techniques have been mentioned, but I just can't ever shut up about 'em.

•Got Chei? Before going downstairs hit yourself with a wand of slowing and Slouch a few times. The easiest thing ever.

•Got Lugonu? High Inv Corrupt just wrecks the place. Spend the next few turns dodging the neutrals, you probably won't even have to buff yourself. IMO the most amusing method.

•Got rF++ and scrolls of immolation? Fear, Noise, and get the attention of all quadrants at once, lure them to you before blowing immolation. You can literally wipe out half of V5 this way. Risky though, it's always dangerous to have multiple titans/ancient liches in your LOS.

•Feeling unprepared? Buff upstairs, control tele if you've got it, read tele scroll, go downstairs, read magic mapping and aim for the middle of a hallway. You'll likely end up somewhere else, just don't be afraid to tele again if it looks dicey. This is my least favorite method, it can backfire horribly.

•Got Shatter? You better also have one of the above methods as well, because you're about to take out the welcoming party, but the rest of the level is about to come pouring in to see what all the fuss is about.

•Genuinely unprepared? Well, you should probably go somewhere else.

A lot of my deaths are in V5 because I obliterate the welcoming party, get overconfident and play poorly whilst cackling madly.

V5 ambush is likely the least dangerous thing you will face in V5 (okay, there are orc and yaktaur bands and such). The reason it can be bad to fight it right there is that fighting is noisy and all 4 Vault quadrants open next to the stairs and those quadrants contain Genuinely Bad Things You Should Care About.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Thank you for all the input. The last attempts at Vault 5 that I distinctly remember all died in one of the corners. In particular the very last one got into a corner, succesfully dealt with the first foes. But didn't get to rest up HP in the now cleared small area then, but instead was reduced bit by bit as with some delay more (small) waves of foes rushed in. This was with not more noise than heavy weapon & heavy armour melee.

That's what makes me so worried. With my current character I've been even more relying on being able to disengage in a timely fashion and heal. (That's essentially the reason why I went with Zin.)

***

About the immolation thing: Seriously? It sounds like a silver bullet on paper, but that's exactly what makes me doubtful. When I had a TeAE in V5 (who later died in one of the corners ...) I asked on ##crawl whether I should consider Tornado in the ambush. The consensus pretty much was that Tornado would get me killed, as the noise would stirr up all the nasty things. Offhand it very much seems to me that this would also go for an immolation inferno in the middle; but I'd love to be educated otherwise.

***

So I suppose, my battle plan would be:

  1. Be prepared: Have potions of cancellation (I have seven) and resitance (one) ready. Use up my potions of might, agility and even brilliance (for more reliable Haste).

(1a -- Have bolt wands (fire, cold, draining) ready to deal with Vault wardens not adjacent to me???)
  2. Go down buffed and hasted. With cTele active. (In the past I also had invoked a teleport immediately before going downstairs. Or is that a bad idea?) On the first time, read ?magic mapping.
  3. If there are no Vault wardens, stair dance. If there are Vault wardens that can be safely killed, kill them, then stair dance.
  4. If the stairs get sealed without a safe way to kill the wardens, teleport to one of the corners and extra-carefully melee your way up, hoping to get enough breathing space in between fights.

When would lamps of fire, fan of gales, sack of spiders see any use? Probably at (4), I assume? I suppose stone of tremors makes too much noise.

***

I'm wondering, though: If I instead disperse the ambush, and draw those folks to another fighting area, would that allow me to teleport back to the stairs later and go upstairs? I.e. rather than 3) and 4) above:

  • 3) Don't stair dance. Read ?fear, move or blink throught the ambush to a fighting area, thereby drawing most of the ambush with me.
  • 4) If HP gets critical, teleport back to the stairs.

???

***

About the character: The reason I have no other charms (Swiftness, Flying, rMissiles, spectral weapon) is simply that they I haven't found them. The only other available charm that would be useful is deflect missiles for which the XP investment seemed to high to me.

Yeah, attribute strategy is still a mystery to me. I raised Str (and once or twice Int) ignorantly in an attempt to get Haste castable. I still have no working mental model or even a decent intuition on what attributes are useful when.

I figured that +2AC would be more generally useful than rElec and rF+. Especially since I had rElec on a sling (that is: for retreat). And since I have been diligently swapping rings of protection from X whenever appropriate.

The latter is also the reason why I let my ring of teleport control stay cursed. It meant that I could swap between rF+, rC+, rPoison and evasion with just two keypresses. And since after a short while I have learned their inventory letters by heart, I was diligently doing that. Frankly, without that, I don't see myself swapping rings, since the interface issue is too annoying. Of course, I'm so scared of V5, that I would force myself to do it. But not for an entire game. This is the reason why I actually wish there were still scrolls of curse jewellery in the game.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

You probably want to get rid of the initial ambush because they'll get in the way later when you're making a tactical retreat from something that is actually dangerous. It's better to kill them quietly without waking anything up, but if you aren't going to be able to clear any space without waking things up you're better off dealing with them before the dangerous things arrive than to have your escape route blocked by a 3-deep line of fodder when an ancient lich and two titans are coming for you.

A solid Vaults 5 tactic to consider is to go get the Rune from Slime, Abyss, or Tomb instead. If you decide Vaults 5 is the best choice, you really need to be able to clear out key enemies even when they have meat shields, which is a capability you probably should have been training for all game.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

I don't usually like stair dancing, so I would prefer reading fear and moving to the side. I would try teleporting somewhere on the outer ring before teleporting to the stairs though. Even after dispersing/killing the ambush there's usually still lots of nasty stuff there. Remember that you can chain teleports, and that you should initiate teleport while your HP is still fairly high.

You should definitely learn DMsl on this char. It will last forever (when not getting attacked), so you can cast it out of combat and don't need great success. You can even go to a safe place and take off your armor to cast it. It will sometimes go down in combat, but you don't have to recast it right away, and with decent power it usually lasts very long. You usually have decent power if you can cast it because it's a level 6 spell.

I think there's an inscription that simplifies the ring interface in exactly the same way as keeping the ring cursed. I don't remember it, just check the manual.

I'm very willing to consider that. (I suppose if Vaults: 5 after the change a couple of versions ago has become difficult enough that the other runes are valid options, that's actually an improvement in gameplay.) I've never been to Tomb, though, so I'd face completely unfamiliar dangers. That would be okay, even if I die there, provided Tomb is generally an option for the last rune in a 3-rune game. I'd take it philosophically as a chance to learn. Slime -- I don't have rCorrosion. I'm not comfortable with the Abyss.

FWIW, here's a recent char dump. Now all I have left to do, is to go for the 3rd rune, be it V5, Tomb, Slime or Abyss.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Tomb is pretty hard, but fairly static, so it gets a lot easier with practice. It's a viable third rune if you have done it a bunch of times and have ways to mitigate the threats, especially with Kiku. I would recommend staying far away from it for now. Learn how to deal with Tomb with a much stronger character.

Also Tomb got some new monsters recently that mix up the fairly harmless guardian mummy spam. That doesn't make it any easier.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

I wonder if it's possible to use getting marked to your advantage - i.e. wait till the monsters start swarming you, then quaff cancellation to remove the mark, then teleport, and a lot of the monsters will have been drawn away to where you were when you got marked.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

With the HuFi in question, do you have a rCorr amulet? If yes, I definitely recommend Slime.

I would never go to the Tomb for the 3rd rune unless I'm undead. And the Abyss can be insanely dangerous, you might as well go to one of the Hells.

Tomb is a viable option for the 3rd rune for Kiku worshippers and Abyss for Ash worshippers (especially stealthy ones).

(Not related to HuFi of Zin, of course.)

No rCorr in this game, unfortunately. But thank you, I'll keep that in mind for the future.

So I buffed myself and went down. Here's a "screenshot":

I could start to stair dance, but my gut feeling is rather to read ?fear and push through to the right and up and fight in the corridor there, as that quadrant has at least doors to inhibit the noise. Does that sound reasonable?

If my HP gets critical: Should I try to teleport ... I don't know, the lower left corner? Or immediately to the stairs, provided the welcome party has followed me?

There is no warden, so I definitely recommend stairdancing. With 32 AC and 38 EV, the guards are not dangerous, even if 8 of them surround you. Pulling them up and fighting upstairs is good because you do less noise down there.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Personally I would just stairdance, and maybe if possible try to pull that flayed ghost up with you for the first run (If the W next to the stairs is the flayed ghost). Stairdancing isn't really noisy, and you've always got the option to use the fear scroll in the future. You've got good defenses, so I don't think you're gonna really get hurt going up and down the stairs. Also, don't forget Zin's powers, recite can be useful here (Yeah, it's loud as shouting, but then, all these vault guards are going to shout anyway).

If the flayed ghost isn't the one next to the stairs, it sort of makes stairdancing a lot less attractive. Recite is probably worth a shot if that is the case.

Looking at the welcoming party, I think you should be able to secure the middle pretty easily with this character, after that it's just being cautious, you're plenty powerful.

Also, don't forget you have sanctuary. I think you could actually use it to wait out the stairs being locked if you had to. Don't be an idiot like me and die with full Zin piety when it comes with a 'don't die' button.

I got the rune! Thank you all, very much! Even if I should die in Zot now, I feel like I made a major breakthrough. I haven't been able to get the third rune for ages.

damiac wrote: Also, don't forget Zin's powers, recite can be useful here (Yeah, it's loud as shouting, but then, all these vault guards are going to shout anyway).

Thanks for reminding me! Yes, the guards already shouted when I came down. I invoked recite. Unfortunately on the next turn some nasties walked in (forgot what exactly, I do remember one Titan, though). So I simply walked past the guards to the left and down into the corridor on the lower left side. From there I wanted to teleport to the upper right corner, the one with the doors. Unfortunately this teleport turned into a random one. Do you need at least two free spaces in either direction on the target location to be safe? Anyways, the resulting location (near the stairs), though undesirable, wasn't immediately devastating. So I evoked teleport again, but before I could swap rings for cTele, the teleport kicked in. But I was lucky. I landed close to where I wanted, anyways.

From the upper right corner/the corridor left to it, I could get enough breathing space in between fights to finally clear the upper quadrant. Anyways, even if not, I suppose I could have teleported back to the stairs. Consumables definitely helped a lot in making fights short and thus easy on my HP bar.

There was one moment of danger. Annoyingly, in the already moderately "safe" quadrant and in a situation that seemed harmless and routine at first. (Shadow dragon and something else, not killing fast enough, being very low on health, retreating, but encountering a vault warden and a yaktaur, coming close to dying.) And yes, I forgot to invoke sanctuary ... :( Instead I quaffed !Healing. I was lucky, though.

Wasn't it changed so you have to evoke the cTele ring before you read teleportation?

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Yes, Ctele rings have to be evoked and don't give perm Ctele anymore. But since he asked about how much space you need for targetting, I am assuming he got a targetting choice and it just placed him on an invalid spot.

For a controlled teleport to always* work, I believe you need 2 spaces in all directions (square los). ie:

  Code:
xxxxx
xxxxx
xxoxx
xxxxx
xxxxx

If you select o, then you could land anywhere with an x (or, if lucky, right on o). However it's very likely you'll be within 1, and only rarely do you get into the outer range of X's. So I generally consider any 3x3 area as safe to Cteleport into. Honestly I'm a bit unsure of if it really does have a chance to place you 2 tiles away, because I can't recall the last time it's actually happened to me.

*You may still random teleport if a monster is on the tile you would have been placed on, and you can't see where monsters are (you're not teleporting within your LOS, are you?), so all controlled teleports can fail sometimes.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

Yes, so either it was a monster or a wall tile within the 4x5 area I was 'porting to. Just bad luck. And yes, you have to evoke cTele. But the second teleport kicked in before I could to that. I don't know if the Tele status has a minimum before it results in a teleport. Or maybe a random teleport from wearing the ring kicked in at that precise moment. Two times bad luck, I guess. But since I was very lucky in were I landed, I have no complaints against the RNG.

The chance of successfully teleporting into a 3x3 empty room is (selecting the center as target) is 73/81 which is about 90%.

Re: Strategies for Surviving Vaults 5

I had actually remembered it was roughly 10%, but from my personal playing experience, it feels more like 1-2%, so I didn't want to post it :) thanks for the confirmation! I probably just don't notice when I'm 2 away since it usually doesn't cause a problem, assuming there were some open tiles in the 2-away squareLOS.

I works so well, and I use it so much (also vs. TRJ) that I once explicitly requested that it be removed or reworked as being too powerful. It was considered to be not that big a deal, and everyone got a bingo square that day.

What is so powerful in it? You make a ton of noise, and wake up half the level. At best it is a double-edged strategy, at worst it is a suicide.
