More advice for a newbie?

Hello Dungeon Crawl folks,

I just recently found this game about a week and a half ago. I used to play Nethack as a kid and finally beat it later on in my life. Later I tried to play ADOM and hated it because I couldn't figure it out, but so far I've been enjoying Crawl. I'm currently playing the trunk version.

Much of my recent play has been trying to unlearn Nethack habits in order to actually be decent at this game, much of which includes "keep stashes," "use-IDing is usually your friend," and "run the hell away when things are going to turn south." Cause things tend to turn south a HELL of a lot more often in this game.

So far, I've done best with a Minotaur Beserker and a Spriggan Venom Mage.

With the Be, I also tried Kobold and Troll, but I never seemed to get very far. With the Minotaur, however, not only did I have lots of corpses, but I had enough umph behind me that soon enough I stopped really having to worry about whether or not I could take out things. The last one I played is currently my high scoring character. Here's the morgue file.

She got through Lair, and the only thing that really threatened her life was Rupert, who almost took her out. I was pretty confident with her overall, though, but Orc turned to be a differnet matter. She ended up meeting a nasty end on Orc:3; I had gone down to Orc:4 and was faced with a veritable HORDE of dangerous looking ogres. I did Brother of Arms a couple times, but my ally died so fast I decided to run the hell away. And then on Orc:3, I ran into some orc sorcerers who summoned a couple demons (a 2 and a 3). I knew I should have run the hell away, but I didn't, and they were going to kill me (One of them had torment and I was NOT immune at all; so I was down to about 20HP). So I tele'd - right into a bunch of orcs. You can guess how that ended.

The SpVM went well for a while. Mephtic Cloud was most definitely my friend. With a couple of them, I began to get lot better at recognizing when was a good time to run away. And of course, Spriggans are AWESOME at running away.

One of my promising looking Sprigs got beat up by Jozef before I realized I couldn't really do anything to him yet.

The other one just recently met her end. Here's the morgue file.

I went through Lair, but it was getting so ridiculously difficult by the time I got to Lair:7 that I decided maybe I'd be better off going somewhere else before trying Lair:8. I had found a couple spellbooks, one of Maledictions which I didn't feel was particularly useful for me. Vehumet finally gave me one, and it had a couple spells like Lightning Bolt and Bolt of Cold, but I felt like I just didn't have much power behind me. If I could confuse my enemies, I did okay, because I could cast Sting as much as I wanted hunger-wise. But if I couldn't, it was so touch-and-go that once things started resisting the confuse portion of Mephtic Cloud, I was really starting to struggle.

I haven't gotten any characters past this point, and I've only gotten about 3 or 4 out of the 50+ I've played now to this area. I've tried some other combinations, but these two are the most luck I've had so far. Are there any things sticking out in particular that I could do to get better?

I also had a couple newbie questions:

From poking around on the forums, I saw a couple terms: scumming and victory dancing. What is that?

Re: More advice for a newbie?

Scumming is where you make a backup of your game to reload if you die. It's scummy.

You can also start scum by restarting new games if initial circumstances don't suit you.

Victory dancing is where you do the same action over and over again to pump your experience pool into a skill. So you kill an Ogre and to celebrate cast a spell a dozen times to pump spellcasting. Victory dance!

You seem to know what you are doing, at any rate. The last floor of a dungeon branch is typically much harder than the rest of it (You can push over Orc 3 and then get annihilated on 4) so don't be afraid to leave final floors for until you are very prepared. Orc is also harder than some of the other earlier branches despite appearing earlier, so you usually want to leave it until after you've done some Lair and Hive. Hive appears later (early early teen floors in Dungeon) but is a pushover if you have poison resistance and nets you a lot of food if that is an issue.
IT'S A SAD THING THAT YOUR ADVENTURES HAVE ENDED HERE!!

Aha! I can see where victory dancing would most certainly be helpful then.

Gotcha. I had heard of save-scumming, but not just plain scumming.

Re: More advice for a newbie?

One thing that sticks out with your spriggan is the complete lack of fighting skill. Fighting gives hp, so you want to train that a bit on every char. Put your new knowledge of victory dancing to use on some rats when you have spare xp.

Oh, really? I didn't know that.

So, to do that, I'd just go ahead and slash some rats?

Eek, just lost another SpVM to a HUGE clump of orcs. Damn priests. @w@

Re: More advice for a newbie?

Here's a bunch of minor things, but your characters look to be decent shape overall.

I also wouldn't be so quick to turn short blades off. Keep it on until you hit minimum delay.

You can train any physical combat skill, including fighting, to level 1 by attacking plants.

You were very focused towards poison, which is natural considering your background, but it didn't leave you with much against anything poison-resistant. But I suppose some of that is just bad luck with books I guess.

Rupert is nasty. I'd avoid him until your character can handle elf or vaults.

Don't use teleport scrolls to escape in orc. Orc always has a layout of densely-populated pockets, often with only one path to proceed. Meaning you'll almost always end up in some other pocket, and it will probably be full of enemies.

I also wouldn't be so quick to turn short blades off. Keep it on until you hit minimum delay.

At least they seem to be in decent shape!

Gotcha. Can I find a list of the minimum delay anywhere convenient?

Yeah, I felt like I wasn't getting very much to blast the poison-resistant with. That one from Vehumet gave me a little, but it still wasn't that awesome. Although, I feel like part of it is my playstyle, too. I feel like when I DO get other spellbooks, I have no idea whether or not I should take any spells from them. Part of it is because the spells do tend to not be very castable (from Bad to Useless often), but then again I guess victory dancing could help a lot. So I guess it's really just me not knowing what I can branch into.

Good plan. I'd rather not try to fight Rupert again any time soon...

All righty. I tried using it because I didn't see any other way to get away from the demons, but if it was most likely not going to get me out of there, it was a bad idea heh. Can torment kill you directly, or does it just halve your current HP? (without resistances, that is)

Re: More advice for a newbie?

You can find out more about reducing the attack delay here: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots

As for spells, Throw Frost/Flame are both good to learn once you get Vehumet's first book. Mystic Blast is good to learn from the second book. You do not always want to learn/use the highest level spells available to you. Ideally, you want your main attack spell to be at 0 hunger (you can achieve this by getting your spellcasting skill up).

Oh, and you don't need Poison up to 13. Once it hits 3-4, it is fine to turn off. Mephitic Cloud will still work just fine.

Cool. How do I calculate it off of the weapon speed it mentions?

That makes sense. I don't tend to use the higher ones unless I'm in trouble; would the throw frost/flame ones be for when I'm fighting weaker monsters with poison resistance?

And I'm guessing I still want to learn the higher spells, too.

Oh, really? Whyfor? I was thinking I needed things like Venom Bolt to cast well, too.

EDIT: Oof, tried all this advice and just died again with my poor SpVMs. But I liked how it played a lot better when trying to train up Fighting.

Found a +1/+2 sabre on D:1 and proceeded to hack things up. Rather than using magic all the time (which I was before) I usually only resorted to it when I wanted to confuse something (maybe also poison it) and THEN hack it up, or if it was really strong and I wanted to confuse/poison/blast it.

I felt like I was definitely fairing a lot better overall, so whoot! I managed to kill some stuff that I had run from before, especially once fighting started getting higher. My dodge also got up to 11 or so; I wasn't sure if I should turn it off or not, but I figured leaving it on was prolly the better option for me.

I made it to the Lair stairs, and there was another centaur warrior there. It got me down to 5 HP pretty fast, and I probably should have bailed, but I wanted to go to the Lair... so I drank a potion of healing (no heal wounds found, sadly) and confused it. It soon broke out as I was trying to kill it and the 7 other things around it, and while I cast Mephtic Cloud on it again, it killed me before it re-confused.

I should just stop trying to fight those bastards (at least until I'm a higher level)

So two questions:

1) should I be using Poison Weapon?
2) was a clay golem on D:10 (or so...I think that was right) an OOD? I ran the hell away after looking that bastard up, cause I had never seen one before and I didn't have a wand of disintegration.

Re: More advice for a newbie?

You can get an idea of weapon speed with @, or go to http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Weapon_Speed.

The reason for turning off poison magic is because as the game goes on you start running into more demons and undead, whom poison is useless against (though some poison spells still do some direct damage). And that exp is best spent on other skills, such as conjurations, which will still help most poison skills.

And definitely leave dodge on for a spriggan. A chance of outright taking no damage from most attacks is always good, IMO.

As for poison weapon, it's up to you, but I'd lean slightly towards skipping. The duration on brand spells is short until you raise your skills, and it doesn't do anything for an already branded weapon. It is an mp efficient way to poison enemies repeatedly, or many different enemies, though.

Or just if you want a bigger front-loaded punch. As a spriggan, it is extra-important to keep your main combat spell hungerless, so you'll want to regularly upgrade your main combat spell every time you get the next level of spell at hungerless.

Silverwane wrote:And I'm guessing I still want to learn the higher spells, too.

If you're following Vehumet as a venom mage, your eventual target is probably Poison Arrow from her third gift book. It's quite good, although unless you find a lucky staff of energy it will be quite some time before you can cast it frequently.

Silverwane wrote:Oh, really? Whyfor? I was thinking I needed things like Venom Bolt to cast well, too.

As you progress through the game, the percentage of monsters that are immune to poison gradually goes up. Almost every monster in the post-endgame is immune to poison, so you won't get much benefit from skill levels spent in poison magic. Poison Arrow is good enough to carry you all the way through a normal 3-Rune game, though, so for your first ascension I wouldn't bother worrying about turning off poison.

The good high-level poison spells are Poison Arrow and Poisonous Cloud. When you have them available you should learn how they work, because they kill lots of things very effectively but they are not without drawbacks.

Silverwane wrote:I made it to the Lair stairs, and there was another centaur warrior there.

Centaur warriors are much nastier than regular centaurs. They're something to avoid for a very long time. Note that Lair isn't as easy for venom mages as it is for most other casters, so you might decide to go to Orc first instead. Orcs tend to be highly vulnerable to poison, while Lair has a few big bruisers that are irritatingly immune, like hydrae.

Silverwane wrote:1) should I be using Poison Weapon?

If you plan to use your weapon, then probably yes. That temporary brand is very powerful, particularly early on. You can stack multiple levels of poison on your target much more cost-effectively in mp and hunger if you can cast this single spell and connect multiple times. It only works on weapons that aren't already flaming or freezing or whatever, though, so once you've upgraded to such a weapon Poison Weapon is suddenly useless.

It generated as part of a little 'vault', which is a pre-generated room that is sometimes slotted into level generation. It was probably guarding an altar to Chei, plus possibly a minor treasure. It generates at a level where it's functionally unbeatable the first time you see it, but it's slow enough that it's easy to escape.

It's the most beautiful thing in the world when Poison Arrow becomes hungerless, however.
