Ghouls and wretched stars

Seriously, how do you deal with them ?

It's like Abyss is the most dangerous place for Ghouls just because of those stars...

I almost died twice because of facing simultaneously two of them, and they drained my Int from 8 to 0 or less in 2-3 turns (I couldn't block LoS)...

Did you try rmut? Maybe that would help.

I didn't, because :
- I didn't find any rMut
- iirc, rMut doesn't prevent from wretched stars mutations

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

Why are ghouls special in this case? This can happen to any character, no?

Ghouls and mummies are undead. Instead of mutating, they suffer rapid stat loss (and rot, I think).

Rmut does protect from wretched star mutations. I'm not sure if it would help when you're a ghoul though

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

Ring of sustain abilities is a good alternative in the case of Ghouls since HP rot is pretty much irrelevant for them.

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

It seems wrong to me that wretched stars have the same effect on undead as any other malmutate source. To a non-undead, they're obviously much less damaging to your character than a real mutator, but to undead they seems like they're 3 times worse.

I think they should either just do a little damage to undead, or let undead just be immune to their effect completely.

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

With SustAB you'll be more or less immune and they will do absolutely nothing. I had a Chei ghoul in Abyss last time even. In 5000 turns I had received only 1 point of stat drain.

I haven't tested the viability of rMut.

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

rMut definitely helps with Malmutate sources, including stars. (I used it on my 15-rune GhWr in Abyss).

Re: Ghouls and wretched stars

For what it's worth I've done ghabyss plenty, several times with ~5 int, and wretched stars were not that problematic; I'd haste and punch them, or maybe just skip haste if I had some restab or similar things. A neqoxec made me brainless a couple times since I didn't care about them, which was sort of inconvenient but I just killed the neqoxec, quaffed restab, and waited it off.
