Ziggaruts with melee character

I was wondering if it's possible to completely clear a ziggarut with a melee/evoker character. I'm currently trying this with a gargoyle in pearl dragon armour as I figured this would be a build with a chance. I've cleared 17 so far, but the difficulty is really ramping up. 17 contained elves and I had to use a couple of heal wounds to be safe. I'm currently ahead on reusables - picked up recharge scrolls more than I've used my wands of healing or haste, and I've gained more piety than I've used on cleansing flame or angel summoning. (I'm worshipping TSO and packing +9 great mace of holy wrath).

My gut feeling is that this is possible, but not with my character. I need a better evoke skill for my disc of storms, I think axes would be better than maces for the cleaving effect, and I don't think TSO is optimal - maybe zin would be better.

Any thoughts. Has anyone done this? I admit having firestorm and tornado would make this much easier

I recently saw a DrTm^Gozag clear a Zig in Dragon Form, it's definitely possible !

Anyway, Makhleb seems to be a strong option, because of his heal-on-kill ability. I also like Qazlal because with really high Invo, 2-3 shots of his Disaster Area can clear any level. Holy Wrath isn't optimal too, even if it can be useful on some hard levels (mummy, Panlords). Vamp is really great, elec or freezing are fine too

As you speak of evokables, I feel like rod of Clouds is a must, way better (imho) than disc of storm... ?Immolation counts as an evokable ? I once use it in an Elf level, it was a one-shot !

id say cloak of thieves can be a key item for a melee, just keep fog all the time then its much more managable

Yeah, Thief cloak is ridiculous. Before it, I remember Implo saying that scrolls of fog are crucial for melee zigging, and cloak provides you with pretty much infinite scrolls of fog.

Interesting comments. Guess I seriously underuse fog... Think I might give this zig up, I seriously doubt this character could handle 10 pan lords simultaneously..

you just want TSO/makhleb and a huge stack of fog, tornado is also nice if you can cast it, basically on mummy or pan lord floors you just hide in a corner and fog repeatedly while killing enemies until everything dies.

The answer to my question is yes. I didn't give the zig up and I emptied it. Came close to dying a few times, but interesting that I finished it with a less than ideal character and less than ideal strategy. Zig 26 was elves and was the one that came closest to killing me. I ended up spamming cleansing flame a lot, until piety dropped to 5 stars. Also used a couple of holy word scrolls and a lot of wand of healing. Zig 27 was fine despite the 10 or so ancient liches. I managed to separate off quite a bit of stuff and took a couple of ancient liches singly. Again ended up spamming cleansing flame a bit when I had 4 ancient liches in range. I didn't get a single pan lord floor or mummy floor, is that odd?

If with melee you don't mean spell less than I have tons of examples (buffs, no tornado/fstorm/...).

Due to fog being so good in zigs I personally like also Dithmenos.

In first zig I had 4 mummy floors, including floor 25 and 27!!! Wtf! Shadow form ruled them all (with might and haste).
Portal Projectile is the second secret weapon (too bad that doesn't trigger shadow mimic, so in case of clear path to target is better to don't have it).

I originally meant without spells, but clearing with a hybrid is also very cool. I have a feeling spamming high level spells like firestorm is probably the easiest way to clear a zig, especially with a fairly robust character with plenty of hp. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not much good with casters myself..

I guess a better question would be, what's the most difficult way to clear a zig? Anyone done it with a hill Orc of beogh for instance?

And doing it with a MiBe of trog, hats off to you sir that's insane. Guess that's only doable with axes. (I've wondered whether it's possible to take a vampiric and holy wrath executioners axe in and swap between them)

Another question would be what tricks make zigs a lot easier?

Generally speaking (I guess those things are pretty obvious):
- Everything that reduces number of monsters in LOS: fog scrolls, robe of the night, cloak of the thief, darkness spell, Dithmenos smoke, nightstalker mutation, tomb card, and so on... And try to alert few monsters at a time.
- AOE: spells (not only conjurations, silence and animate dead are other good examples), invo (Quatzlal, Chei...), evo, scrolls (holy word, immolation, torment...)
- Effects on kill (Makhleb, Vehumet, TSO)

Other tricks mostly depend on the floors.

Recently tried melee zig+zin with quiet a lot of success:

1.) If it looks like you might die (around 100hp for me), use sanctuary and stasis and spam wield/unwwield the distortion weapon. Seems like there is a ~25% chance of banishment upon unwield. So at 10 turns you have about a 95% chance of getting banished. You will be glowing quiet a lot though :)

2.) Imprison is really nice for creating artificial walls but it usually doesn't last as long as the tomb card.

3.) Recite will disable a ton of enemies but unfortunately you have to wait quiet long for your breath to be restored.

4.) Vitalisation is also really nice- protects you from most of the death curses of mummies.

Trips to the abyss are needed from time to time to restore piety.

Hadn't thought of using zin, sounds very doable but a bit painful with recurrent abyss trips...

Last time I did it was with a GrFi of Makhleb. Though I did have a broad axe of holy wrath and 27 Evo (Lamps of fire aww yeee).

I have cleared zig with an exec axe wielding MiMo of TSO (my only 15 run to date). Needed other things like Haste wands for stuff like Pan lords to kill them before they dropped too much stuff on me.
