Not sure if I did something wrong or just bad luck. Are flaming weapons bad against certain creatures? Thanks for your past and future help.

The gecko had the "inner flame" status when you killed it, which causes the monster to explode upon death. Most likely this is because you read a scroll of immolation, which gives the status to all monsters within LOS.

Got it, I was reading scrolls to identify them. I need to be sure there is no one in LOS. Does immolation wear off?

Yes (it takes a while though, so it won't wear off during the time of a normal fight).

It's not as long a timeout as it used to be, and I could be wrong, but I think the scroll timeout is shorter than the spell (at least, that's been my observation on use, as opposed to code-diving).

The only reason to read-/quaff-ID in the presence of enemies is if you're quite certain you can't survive or escape the fight without a panic button like curing, heal wounds, blink, teleport, etc.

When used intentionally, ?immolation can be great fun against pack animals (e.g. green rats) if you have a launcher or throwing weapon that can kill one of them while you're still out of the blast radius.

Breaching V:5 has never given me the giggles before!

In particular, you should only read-ID scrolls on a level that you have fully cleared, because
1) teleportation can land you in the middle of unexplored territory, surrounded by dangerous monsters
2) noise can wake up monsters, which is not as high risk but still annoying

If I still have magic mapping unidentified, I read-id scrolls after clearing a level and going downstairs. If the scroll is teleport, I just go back up the stairs. If MM is identified but not noise or tele, I read-id on a cleared level. If MM, noise and teleport are all identified, I read-id wherever.
