You have very sharp fingernails.
You are partially covered in colourless scales (AC +1).
Your flesh is cold resistant.
You are very good at protecting items from cold.
A weak demonic guardian rushes to your aid.
A frigid envelope surrounds you and freezes all who hurt you.

This character is about as far as I usually get before hubris leads to YASD, but this time I got a decent set of mutations so I'm trying to be extra careful. I haven't found any useful items yet, but I got a bunch of books and no idea what spells to pick. I also wonder what skills I should train and at what point I should stop training skills like Maces & Flails or Conjurations.

Im also rather clueless when it comes to gods. I chose Nemlex because I was hoping for an early Deck of Wonders, which didn't work out despite sacrificing a bunch of rations. Should I go with another God for future DsVMs?

Re: DSVM of Nemlex Beginner Help

For the immediate future, I'd go with Bolt of Cold over Bolt of Magma, because it's flat-out better. Monsters immune to both cold and poison are uncommon enough that you can bury them under Nemelex summons. If you had immediate access to Bolt of Fire, that would be a different story, of course. Anyway, pick up Throw Frost (or Throw Flame, if you want to hold out for Bolt of Fire and use Magma in the interim) so you can actually train up your skill enough to cast that valuable high-level nuke. Lightning Bolt is also an option, and possibly one you can cast immediately, but it's a little harder to use than the others because it bounces.

Lethal Infusion doesn't work on a flaming weapon such as your whip. Neither does Poison Weapon, which is actually one of the better temporary brands, by the way. The temporary brand spells only work on vanilla weapons.

Sublimation of Blood and Fulsome Distillation are good spells, but odds are you won't need them for quite some time so there's really no rush for committing the spell slots. If you pick up Fulsome Distillation immediately, use it on one of every type of corpse you see so you can get free identification of some of the nastier potions. That trick really depends on whether you've identified most of them already, though, otherwise you're just using it to stockpile mutation potions.

Once you've got your big nuke online, you'll want to start training evocations. A ring of levitation is most ideal because it never runs out of charges, but you can also fire off rubbish wands and miscellaneous items whenever there's xp in the pool. Once you've built up evocations a bit, your Nemelex summons will be less likely to be hostile and you'll get better effects from the other cards. Getting your big nuke is your first priority, though.

Nemelex is a fairly complicated goddess to follow, and a lot of her perks are redundant with what you, as a caster, can already do. She's still quite powerful, but picking up Vehumet, Sif Muna, or Kiku would probably result in a simpler and more certain game. For a venom mage, Vehumet guarantees early access to Poison Arrow and Poisonous Cloud, which are powerful enough to carry you to Zot on their own if you don't find anything by luck. Sif Muna gives random spells, but provides the highest chance of staple defensive spells like Blink or Repel Missiles. Kiku gives a series of guaranteed necromancy books, which tend to be at least normally against most monsters that are immune to poison. You still have to watch out for early demons with Kiku, though.

Re: DSVM of Nemlex Beginner Help

Thank you for the helpful reply!

Building up a big nuke in particular is something that didn't even cross my mind, as I never got a VM to the point in the game where Mephitic Cloud + Sting didn't cut it anymore. It seems that I'm getting closer to that point, so I'll start working on that nuke. Throw Frost/ Bolt of Cold sounds like the way to go for now, but should I take it as general rule that cold > fire for Venom Mages unless I get Bolt of Fire early ? Also, are temporary brands (besides fire for hydras) worth learning at all once you pick up a decent branded weapon?

Nemlex seems a bit redundant indeed for a caster, now that I think of it. As I said I chose her because I was hoping for an early XP boost from a Deck of Wonders, but that's not really helping in the long term. Vehumet definitely looks like a solid choice for VMs, so I'll give that a try once this character dies.

Thanks again for the help!

Mind you, you'll still want to use Sting and Throw Frost/Flame where it works to do that. The bolt of (element) spells are what you break out when there's a whole herd of elephants or death yaks thundering in at once, or when you're looking at an orc knight rather than just a warrior. You won't want to use them for everything, because they cost a lot of food to cast until you've built up Spellcasting skill quite a lot.

Doc Brown wrote:Throw Frost/ Bolt of Cold sounds like the way to go for now, but should I take it as general rule that cold > fire for Venom Mages unless I get Bolt of Fire early ?

I don't think it's an easy call, and mostly I recommended going with ice magic because Bolt of Magma simply isn't very good. Bolt of Cold and Bolt of Fire deal roughly the same damage, but Cold has 7 range and Fire has 6. They both deal with roughly the same situations and can hit multiple monsters if you get several approaching in a line. Magma has range 4, which is much shorter than the other two so it is much less likely to be useful for hitting multiple monsters, and it also requires an investment in earth magic as well as conjurations and fire magic to get spell power. Splitting your xp three ways isn't very good when you could split it two ways instead for roughly the same effect.

Doc Brown wrote:Also, are temporary brands (besides fire for hydras) worth learning at all once you pick up a decent branded weapon?

They are non-functional once you have a branded weapon. You can use them for training for a different spell if you want, but particularly on a primary caster you're not going to benefit from hauling around a spare vanilla weapon just in case. Better to spend that inventory slot on a potion of speed or something.

That build is called 'Poison Arrow Gatling Gun'. Poison Arrow is in Vehumet's third book gift, and unlike most poison spells it deals quite a lot of physical damage too. And it poisons things that are poison resistant.

Re: DSVM of Nemlex Beginner Help

Not having played a lot of spellcasters before I find this information incredibly helpful. All these schools of magic had me completely overwhelmed, despite the wiki and learndb.
I went with the cold spells and was able to clear the Lair for the first time without ever getting close to trouble. I'm not sure where to head next, as I don't have poison resistance and the Orcish Mines scare me. I guess I'll carefully explore the next few Dungeon Levels and hope to come across a means of poison res.

Re: DSVM of Nemlex Beginner Help

Fulsome Distillation is THE spell for you, since potions weight the decks toward Wonders, especially once you are fighting Ugly Things. Potions of mutations cost much more than 1 g (9-10 potions of mutations will glow in weird colors when sacrificed) so you can actually get some piety from it, too. You may want to keep some potions of mutations for the roulette, though.

This may have changed since the last iteration of Trunk that I played Nemelex in, though.

Awesome, I could use a Deck of Wonders. I wasn't even thinking of sacrificing potions.

Edit:
Succumbed to Frederick's Orb of Energy on Swamp:2, but I'm really happy with that run, as I got a score of over 110k, 95k more than my second best so far.

One thing I noticed was that I ran out of places to go shortly before I died. I had cleared the Lair, Hive, Mines and 1-2 of the Shoals and Swamp. Diving deeper into the Dungeon didn't seem like a viable option after D:19-ish, and the Uniques in the side branches were too tough for me as well. I didn't enter the Slime branch and the Elven Halls, but they seem a bit tough for a L15 character. Is the Slime branch where I should have headed next?

The #1 reason of death for my characters who get past the temple are invisible monsters. Frederick killed me while he was invisible, and so did quite a few orcs before him. I'm usually too far away from the stairs once I get attacked by an invisible creature, and unless I blink away there seems to be no escape. What am I doing wrong (besides not finding any means to see invisible)?

Is it better to sacrifice items to nemelex one at a time, or in piles?

I don't know what the answer is, but the answer *should* be (according to Crawl design philosophy) that "it doesn't matter". Tedious inventory management for non-obvious gain is an explicit no-no in Crawl design.

You should clear the Vaults till they get hard; probably found further down the Dungeon proper.
The Crypts and Hall of Blades are also found within the Vaults, but be careful.
Slime Pits is mostly a post-game place (like Hell, the Tomb, and Pandemonium), where you go when you've cleared the last level of Zot, but haven't taken the Orb of Zot.

Slime pits is easy enough, but you need acid resistance. I had amulet of corrosion and cloak of preservation, and you can easily do slimes, enemies won't do much damage.

It's the acid blobs and the post-kill treasure raid that are the problems, ultimately.

Doesn't matter.

1% chance that a card you draw will be from the Deck of Oddities -- the Xom card being one of the cards there.

I had a funny experience with that card actually. I was drawing from my summonings deck when I suddenly summoned an army of (friendly) demons. I thought it was a new effect of a Pentagram card I had never seen before. I read through the messages and it turned out to be Xom being friendly.

For this message the author Arcares has received thanks:

Re: DSVM of Nemlex Beginner Help

I'm now back where my L15 DSVM died, but this time I'm a L19 SpVM. I hope noone minds if I keep my questions in the same thread.

- Is my build fine so far? I gained a bunch of levels thanks to two Legendary Decks of Wonders and burned all the XP getting my translocations skill from 2 to 10, Controlled Blink looks really tempting.

- I got Str 19 and Dex 7 from a Shuffle card. My EV dropped by about 10 points, should I be concerned? Should I consider learning some melee skills at this point?

- I haven't found any books containing any of the nukes that were mentioned in this thread, but Nemelex keeps showering me in Ornate/Legendary Decks of Summoning, which I use against anything mildly threathening. Will they carry me to the endgame or do I need to come up with an alternative way of killing things?

- Also, are any of the Nemelex abilities besides Draw One worth using?
