Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

I know it's a very good ring (regen, +15HP) but I also have:
  Code:
B - the ring of the Mage (left hand) {Wiz MR++ Int+3}
E - the ring "Chom" (right hand) {rF+ Str+3 Int+4}

which I am currently wearing. The Str and Int help a lot with casting, especially while wearing swamp dragon armour. Also I have Powered by Death which helps with regen and Ds aren't lacking in HP. Does the multiplicative effect of PBD apply to the extra regen as well as my base regen? If it does I could have insane regen with a couple of corpses...

I think I've been cursed with too good luck :lol:

Feel free to peruse the dump:

Re: Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

No, keep wearing those rings and switch to vitality only for regeneration when safe.
rF+ and MR++ are more important for your characters since you don't have another source of rF+ and your MR is pretty low.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Is MR+++ really too low? I managed Elf with MR+++.

BTW the wiki has how PBD works wrong, it says it multiplies your regen rate but I've now found out that it actually adds 100*(number of corpses) to your regen. #badwiki :oops:

I'd wear ring of vitality over rF+, Str+3 and Int+4.

Why not? It wasn't hard with this char and I found the Ring of the Mage and the +6 swamp dragon armour with SInv there so I'd say it was worth it.

Maybe if you're trying to maximise your high score you might avoid it because there's no rune and it's a waste of time or something (?), but I'm still fairly new to the game and I don't really care about highscores so much as just blasting some pansy elves :twisted:

well elf is really really dangerous and the loots are often unnecessary for winning

Re: Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

It's actually the other way around. If you want to maximize your high score, you ignore Elf and sometimes even Orcish Mines because they don't have runes.

elf never seems hard when you are winning because elves have no hp, but it is a good place to go if you want to die quickly, and blademasters are basically the same as orb guardians so if you are strong enough to clear it then you obviously don't need the loot to win

But the game keeps telling me I'm stupid when I take it off :lol:

I think maybe I'll switch when I can cast LCS a bit more reliably without it. I still have OoD for fire resistant enemies but it's a bit situational.

In depths/vaults:5 - without anything else giving you rF+? I mean I know this guy is a caster, but taking a couple of fireballs to the face hurts a surprising lot.

I would argue a character with these defensive (almost 200 HP, 37 AC, 22 EV) would have zero problems facing monsters using fire elemental attacks. But even if it did, how long does it really take to swap that ring on?
If you're arguing that pip of rF is necessary to survival, why are you not concerned with a pip of rC or rN? I really don't think the stages of the game you have mentioned have some sort of overwhelming amount of fire elemental attacks. +15 HP & Regen are going to be better in every single fight fire damage is not present.

Re: Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

Yeah there is a lot of elemental damage flying around and I do think rF is somewhat more important than rC and rN. Nonetheless, +15 HP and regen is great in every battle, while rF+ is helpful only maybe 1/4 of encounters at this point. Everything that rF can help protect you against are things that require LOF, while +15 HP and regen helps you against all situations in which you are damaged. So overall I'd wear that. If I open a door to a bunch of fire dudes or something, it is just one aut to switch.

Close the door first. Then it doesn't matter how many auts it is.

Well naturally, yes, close door first. Then if I want to fight them, switch. If the fire dudes can open doors it does matter how many auts it is.

It is safer to explore with rF+ than with +15 HP, you can always switch to the vitality when hurt unless we are talking about early dungeon where you can be one-shot. Hopefully my comment makes more sense this time :)

Re: Elf, I disagree with "don't do Elf", but definitely keep in mind that Elf:3 in particular can be incredibly dangerous, and can get out of control quickly. Make sure you have a clear plan for dealing with elves without giving them turns in LOS, and be ready for situations that rival Vaults:5. There are circumstances where I do Elf, but it's definitely not necessary in most cases.

If you are aiming for, for instance, a racial highscore, it's often beneficial to go to Elf at a low XP level, since the XP and items you gain there may help you to go through the remainder of the game faster. A character like SpEn dosen't really need the items or experience, so you don't benefit from doing Elf. Also, you can't really do the vault as quickly as a melee character or FE, since the tougher elves have high MR, and you can't set up a tunnel to kill enemies in as effectively, since you probably will have weak melee skill at that time (and even if not, it will be hard to bring the elves to where you want, because you will literally be too stealthy).

Believe it or not, Sleep has no EV penalty for the player:

1)
  Code:
bool player::cannot_move() const
{
    return paralysed() || petrified();
}

2)
  Code:
// Total EV for player using the revised 0.6 evasion model.
int player_evasion(ev_ignore_type evit)
{
    const int size_factor = _player_evasion_size_factor();
    // Repulsion fields and size are all that matters when paralysed or
    // at 0 dex.
    if ((you.cannot_move() || you.stat_zero[STAT_DEX] || you.form == TRAN_TREE)
        && !(evit & EV_IGNORE_HELPLESS))
    {
        const int paralysed_base_ev = 2 + size_factor / 2;
        const int repulsion_ev = _player_para_evasion_bonuses(evit);
        return max(1, paralysed_base_ev + repulsion_ev);
    }

    ...snip...
}

Stupid reasons. Dropped all my scrolls and pots by stairs. Didn't want them to burn or shatter and figured nothing is a match for me on Elf 1 and 2 which is all I wanted to explore not 3. I had decent res and made sure to only 1v1 peeps. Came across him and popped Heroism figuring these will be fast. Nope, I didn't even dent him for some reason like he had 60 EV or something while My whole bar was yellow from poison. Can't do much about 12 EV when you wear crystal plate or any plate armour as a melee.

Actually if you're wearing plate/cpa (and your strength is good enough? I think?) after your dodging skill hits a 'magic breakpoint' you start having EV added as fast as if you were in leather, so it's a great end game investment. (I don't know how to calculate the magic breakpoint, but it's 10-15ish in my experience)
Also, Aizul has 8/18 defenses - IIRC he's comparable to a deep elf blademaster in terms of toughness to kill.

I shouldn't even be surprised at this point

Also:
-If you paralyze/petrify/petrifying/sleep a monster, in melee it loses all AC:
--But at range, no change!
--But if it has phase shift active (blink frogs, The enchantress, Vashnia), even though player phase shift doesn't stop working during para/petrify, it's stopped for melee as well!
-You have a 5 EV penalty in melee during any 'delay' besides autoexplore/autotravel/run, including 'leaving' phase of taking stairs, eating and swapping equipment (also 10 against invisible enemy and 3 while constricted)
-You can speak while asleep (I'm not sure there's any application for this but there's an amusing comment about 'allowing sleeptalking') and asleep confused monsters wander as though confused (the game calls it 'sleepwalking' on examination)
-Monsters get a 2.5x damage multiplier 'stab' against you if you're asleep, and this is the only way to die to a real bat's melee as a deep dwarf

Since this has derailed massively, I'd argue that Elf3, if you can take bossElves one-on-one is pretty, if not 100%, manageable. You just need to dig a proper corridor - two criss-crossing lines that break LoS except for one square. Then lure Elves through shouting and the such and destroy them one on one. I've not died to Elf3 since I saw someone do this.

I just wanted to say that HP is the best resistance in the game (rDeath in fact), so having more of it is always a good thing. I can't think of any ring I'd rather wear over Vitality.

If it were me I'd remove the rF ring and use it on a swap with Wiz/MR.

Vitality is amazing on any character but -perhaps- high level Trolls. And maybe DDs since they get nothing from the regen part. Idk. I'd wear it anyway. It's awesome.

I remember a game playing MuFi of Oka and having a ring of regen and the Ring of Vitality... Then dying to that fiery girl with her hell knights around D:20. Still had rF- by that point... :P

I agree that ring of vitality isn't necessarily the best ring, but it is up there. I think I'd usually prefer it even to +5 protection or evasion, but I could see some characters preferring the damage mitigation to +HP and regen. And a high slaying bonus is always hard to pass up, of course.

15HP > 8 AC or 8 EV.

Nice slaying is more arguable since killing things faster is the best way of not taking damage, but short of like 0/9 slaying ring while using a dwhip I think I'd go vitality still.

Re: Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

Vitality is the most overrated item in the game IMHO.
For 200 HP character it adds 7.5% HP. It's less than difference between rF+++ and rF++.
If you lose 30 damage per hit, you need 7 attacks to die so the ring is equivalent of -2 damage per attack, it is +4 ring of protection. Ring of evasion is even more superior, because if your +6 EV allows to avoid even one of these 7 attacks, you have just saved 30 HP.

Re: Should I wear Ring of Vitality?

If it takes four or more attacks to kill you, then ring of robustness will prevent more damage than ring of vitality gains you hp (4 attacks vs 8 more AC is 16 less damage on average). The regen means vitality adds another 2 hp every 5 turns, but if you are getting attacked even a single time per ten turns then robustness saves as much HP as the regen gains you (1 attack vs 8 more AC is 4 less damage on average)

So in most situations where it takes more than four attacks to kill you, robustness is better than vitality for survivability. The exceptions are attacks that do not use your AC value in a typical way, or elemental attacks when you have a resistance, or attacks that deal 0 damage an appreciable amount of the time even before robustness's AC (since you cannot deal negative damage in crawl). I would suggest the last situation is meaningless since you are not going to die in either case.

Comparing Shaolin vs Vitality is not as straightforward, but I would suggest that again it is better in a majority of situations.

Of course if you find ring of vitality early on, it is exceptionally good, especially for low-hp races. But since it is an artefact this is a very rare situation.

For the character in the OP I would wear the wiz ring and either vitality or the str/int ring.
