Gastronok died over deep water

I also forgot to check whether his hat was enchanted or artifact, but I wanna know if there's any way to retrieve it.

Right now it is specifically special-cased not to.

  Code:
    // Letting mostly-melee characters spam apport after every Shoals
    // fight seems like it has too much grinding potential.  We could
    // weaken this for high power.
    if (grd(where) == DNGN_DEEP_WATER || grd(where) == DNGN_LAVA)
    {
        mpr("The density of the terrain blocks your spell.");
        return SPRET_ABORT;
    }

Only because it used to. :-(
I think deep water should have a required, not-random, power level minimum.

Re: Gastronok died over deep water

Letting people only sometimes get items that are in deep water would lead to pretty silly crap. Stashing in water is good, and letting people perform an elaborate dance of fly and apport for slightly safer item storage would be bad.

I am not sure it would affect game that much. Everyone still can use waypoints to Lair 2 stash or just drop items in a corner or even don't pick them up in the first place (I tried all these approaches and am not using the most optimal one).

are you serious
do you seriously think that the game should be designed around people who suffer ocd and would stash items in water instead of lair:2

None the less, it is bad design to allow players to gain tiny benefits with a lot of effort. You shouldn't have to compromise between having fun and playing the game as effectively as possible.

this! this is so much true!!! i wish so many game designers would understand this...
I sometimes play dominions turn based strategy - and to play it competitevly you sometimes need to spend HOURs to really set up one turn...

I've never played that Multiplayer believe it or not... I just found the god creating and solo game entertainment enough. I don't think I'd even want to try Multi knowing how much goes into good strategies there.

On topic: I don't think it is asking too much to have better aportation options rather than worse. It might be used poorly but who cares? As has been said elsewhere, more fun is better.

Re: Gastronok died over deep water

Sorry to hear about you losing your chance at the Ponderous Hat, OP! That really sucks, and it has happened to me once or twice. On the other hand, you're sure to find an even better hat later on in the game, probably via Acquirement Scroll if you ask for Armo(u)r. So, don't sweat it, keep your eyes forward, focus on the finish line, and love what you do have instead of hating what you don't. Good Luck Commander!

Re: Gastronok died over deep water

It's too bad Ice Form floats instead of swims.

I think it should be possible to find a viable form from the Wand of Polymorph while standing over shallow water, but I know that isn't the case at the moment.
