I intend on using Firestorm as my endgame WMD.

What would you train and why? I know that I will probably get 10 different conflicting answers so I'm going to go with the best explanation or agreement. Also, what spells would you learn next? Haste is my next target but I also want to free up some spell levels for whatever Vehumet offers me next.

I'm currently training Long Blades, Spellcasting and Charms (so I can learn Haste).

Re: What would you train and why?

What I would probably train right now: Fighting. Reason: holy shit, 60 HP on a level 13 character that isn't even a cat.
What I wouldn't train for quite a long time: Spellcasting.

with that much HP, if a goblin sneezes near you, you die.
my posts are to be read in a mildly playful tone, with a deep, sexy voice.

If I understand the Fighting skill correctly, I only get 1.625 HP per skill level right now. You really think that it is worth it?

Yes. You are squishy, like bug. Is bad.

Once you get some Fighting, a bit of Stealth might not be a bad idea.

Re: What would you train and why?

I have no idea what Fighting actually does apart from that it improves your HP and melee capabilities. Your HP is quite bad, your magical offence will be OK for a while, your AC/EV are not offensive (though if you have any scrolls of enchant armour you should probably go and enchant those gloves and helmet, maybe cloak).

Though I admit I haven't played DE in ages, I'm out of touch wrt what their HP are supposed to be like at this point in the game. Still, at least 10 Fighting seems like a good idea.

I did wizard mode tests. 1 fighting results in 64 HP, 2 - 66, 3 - 68, 4-70, 5-72,6-74.

Re: What would you train and why?

well i'd get some fighting (and probably long blades) because that's a reasonably decent weapon you are wielding and i would like hitting things with it to be better, and as a bonus it gives me some hp ... but it should be well-known that I like hitting things with weapons a lot more than most players do.

If you have any enchant armour I'd use it on your gloves (and if you have more maybe on your helmet) since I would like to be more durable.

Assuming you have some amnesia (or books, for the spells you learned from books) you can free up lots of spell levels just fine by forgetting spells you already know, so you don't need to worry about that.. To be honest I like none of your spellset except for Flight, IMB, and battlesphere (well ok I don't like battlesphere but it is strong) and maybe Force Lance.

Wow, that's a big difference a little bit of Fighting can make.

Re: What would you train and why?

And even with poor aptitudes, you will get some levels in fighting and long blades very fast. I agree with crate and Sar, get some fighting, then some long blades. You got a good weapon—one with vampiric ego, no less, which helps keep you alive to boot. So I'd do that and get some more dodging because EV is your friend.

I agree with crate that there are a lot of spells on there that are redundant or that I wouldn't bother with, but if you are still figuring out what you like and haven't had much opportunity to try out a lot of these spells, it makes sense to experiment. Any that you find yourself not using, though, can be cleared out when you need to make room for a new spell. (Assuming you got a couple of ?amnesia and/or some books you don't need with the spell you want to forget—people often forget or don't know this, but you can destroy a book to forget a spell contained in said book. Hit r to read, select spell book, select spell you already have memorized, hit F, answer prompt with Y. The book dies but takes your memory of the spell with it.)

Yes, formula for fighting was changed recently. Before the change it gave about 2.2% per skill level, not good for DE with 63 HP indeed.

I started pumping fighting and I have 72 HP at level 4. Def worth it.

I'm going to avoid longblades. Call it noob arrogance but I can't imagine how putting that XP into something other than my main defensive and offensive tool is a good thing.

I had no idea that amnesia gave you the spell levels back. I assumed it was just used to free up a space to make room in your total spell memerization cap (which I've read is 20 spells). I will do this soon.

I wish. This run has been the most generous that I've encountered so far but I've only found 1 or 2 scrolls of enchant armor.

Yep, that's noob arrogance alright. I did the same thing for a long time, now I can't imagine playing any character without some melee ability. Remember, getting 10 in long blades isn't going to be a huge exp sink, but it will make you much more effective with that sword. Some melee skill, coupled with the fact that it's a vampiric sword, means you will be able to melee a lot of stuff you're wasting MP on (and making extra noise in the process) right now. If you're out of mana, you can kill stuff with your sword, to refill your HP and your MP(thanks to vehemut).

Anyway, I think you might want to rethink that. Nobody's saying you should suddenly pump all your xp into long blades, but a small investment there will pay off very well for you.

No, it is not arrogance, it is unawareness that sometimes you will have to fight at 0 MP to survive.

Re: What would you train and why?

you can kill every rat in the dungeon with fire storm. but the noise will wake up tons of monsters, that will come to see what is going on, and find a tasty deep elf without full mana. yummy.
10 levels in long blades is enough to raise 1 or 2 levels in conjuration. see if this is worth it.
also what Sandie said.

Melee attacks only cost the delay it takes to make the attack, unlike spells, which always require MP. Once you run out of MP in the middle of a pitched fight, what do you plan on doing? Simply running will only get you so far - especially if you're forced to burn a valuable escape option like ?tele to do so.

And, like Damiac said, there's a lot to be said for doing things quietly - especially for branch ends.

Considering the fact you're worshiping Vehumet, if you haven't found a spellbook with Haste/Deflect Missiles yet, I'd consider spending it on a spellbook. If you do, go for a staff - if nothing else, they almost always provide at least a useful resistance.

More like only 0.5 level in Conj, I guess.

Armour is a pretty good bet. Although If you don't have a wand of HW, those are really good and you might get one from wand acquirement. In my opinion book is a bad idea, especially in this case as you really don't need more spells than you already have (well haste would be great, but you have a book for that)...

On review of his char dump, he appears to have both Wizardry and Air, so he has both Deflect Missiles and Haste. Vehumet will give him all the killdudesing he'll ever need, so I doubt it'd be optimal to spend it on a spellbook. I reiterate my opinion that a staff would be wise - at worst, he gets something like Summoning, and at least that gives warding and rN.

Re: What would you train and why?

I forgot this thread title ends with "why". Please see table of skill points required to increase skill level, it can be used to judge how expensive high skill levels really become.
  Code:
    const int exp[28] = { 0, 50, 150, 300, 500, 750,         // 0-5
                          1050, 1400, 1800, 2250, 2800,      // 6-10
                          3450, 4200, 5050, 6000, 7050,      // 11-15
                          8200, 9450, 10800, 12300, 13950,   // 16-20
                          15750, 17700, 19800, 22050, 24450, // 21-25
                          27000, 29750 };

Re ?acq, I usually ask for armour, I'm usually satisfied and often enough wowed by what I get. I believe you have found all your slots, which means you're less likely to get a crap item that fills a missing slot. I'd go armour.

Is this total experience, or just going up one level?
(I mean, 50 is lvl 1, do you need 150 more or 100 more to reach lvl 2?)

Re: What would you train and why?

In general the good acquirements are weapon (this is the most likely to give you a good item, but having two good weapons is not much more useful than having one, so there's the drawback), wand (probably the best for a majority of characters), armour (less exciting than wand ... you generally hope for good aux armour from this since body armours tend to be bad for various reasons), and sometimes staff (particularly for characters where this will generate a rod), roughly in that order of goodness.

Re: What would you train and why?

If there are some expensive but immediately useful things in shops that you are actively saving up for right now, and you aren't really close to being able to buy them yet, then acquire gold is a great option.

Otherwise: acquire wand. Good shot for wand of heal wounds, haste, or teleportation, and wands like digging and disintegration are still very welcome if you haven't found them yet. Unless you have all those wands already in which case armor or lots of other things is fine.
