I'd like to abandon Trog and pick up Makhleb for better in-combat healing and the ability to start working towards learning utility spells like Repel Missiles and Haste. However, I've heard that Trog's wrath is very dangerous. Is my character strong enough to survive Trog's wrath?

15 runes, I haven't won an extended game yet.

And that's fine, I'm looking for some dragon armor (preferably gold or pearl, fire or ice otherwise) to replace it. I figured the extra 5 ac over my old armour would be more valuable when this character isn't running from fights anyway. (my current total AC is deceptive: 10 of it disappears the moment I'm dealt fire damage =/ ) Back when this character had boots of running it would have been a different story, but I lost those when my hoof mutation maxed out.

FDA sounds really good to me if you can enchant it, should make your evasion less miserable, too. At least when you train up some Dodging.
I don't know much about postend but I would probably not abandon Trog in regular game. He's good and his powers are good and useful.

Do you have access to an amulet of warding? You don't have to wear it constantly, but being able to put it on when hostile BOA are summoned will greatly increase your chances of surviving.

I infact do have one! That's a good idea. My current guardian amulet is hardly vital seeing as I'm wielding an antimagic weapon all the time.

Not planning on doing the extended game in the first place would also increase my chances of survival. =)

EDIT: By the way, I heard something about wrath effects being tied to exp gains to avoid people just waiting out the wrath. Is that something that has actually been changed in trunk?

yes, in trunk you can't rest away wrath.
I like keeping trog for all 15 runes on my berserkers and that axe would make me even more certain to do so. It's a bit harder with no wand of haste but not that bad.

What would you want to have instead of Trog? You can't worship The Shining One, so I'm not sure what god could be worth Trog's wrath. (Trog gives magic resistance, regeneration and allies all of which are useful late game)

Yeah, a switch to Makhleb just to get utility spells is a bad move. You've got good mutations, an insanely good exec axe, and a great god. Keep doing what you've been doing, IMO.

I'm not really the biggest fan of Trog. =/ I find that as the game goes later and later berserking becomes more and more risky as it ends up wearing off in longer fights, even when trog is extending it, and Trog's hand becomes simply for the Magic Resistance as the hp regen seems so weak. The summons are all that's really attractive to me once he's given me a weapon worth keeping (and boy did he this game).

Anyway:

Trog's Wrath - survived. He is now mollified. The summoned swarms of berserking monsters were scary at first, but they were actually quite easy, especially with the warding amulet. The only really close call was when Trog paralyzed me with a single yaktaur in sight, and the yaktaur happened to have silver bolts. That HURT.

Glad you survived the wrath. You should try a 15 runer with Trog all the way some time, though, it is a lot of fun.

I disagree with the others in this thread:

If you want to do extended with a melee oriented built Mahkleb is a great choice! Cleaving plus his "vampire" abbility is insane and easily outperforms trog's abbilities in extended, were regen just doesn't cut mustard and berserking is imho far too risky and often unneccessary the rest mahkleb offers is just very nice fluff really also V5 should be a piece o'pie ;) Aside from that ditching trog will give you the option of actually learning a few spells. A friend of mine makes a habit of ziggurating with axe toting Dsfi's of mahkleb and has cleared many.

That armor does seem very risky however and i would personally prefer a plate of any rc+,rf+,rn+ or mr+ over it, if dragon armor is not available for you atm.

Also regen and MR+ never stop being useful, particularly for the four Hells. Makhleb is great too of course, but especially after wrath rework, leaving gods is much riskier.

But sure if you are going for 15 runes just do whatever you want, I guess.

Basically, I don't play him very often but when I cleared zig sprint with mahkleb, which admittedly might not be a huge achievement, I don't think i ever summoned a demon once. For me his main draw for melee builds especially those with axes is healing on kills, big groups of enemies just become so much easier, while you focus on the dangerous ones you get healed by the lesser threats that surround them.

Generally you should avoid taking on too much stuff at once. In Ziggurats and Zig Sprint you can't do that so much, but outside of them it is not too hard to limit how much stuff you fight at once. Except for Zig Sprint I would never base weapon choice off of Makhleb's heal on kills, nor vice versa. Also once Zig Sprint gears up, Summon Lesser/Greater Demon gets majorly devalued because even strong summons hold up for like one turn when surrounded, particularly when so much stuff casts abjuration against you.

Well it's titanically stupid to call makhleb's summons and even destruction "nice fluff" in general when all you base this (again stupid beyond measure) claim on is using makhleb in a sprint based on the post-extended part of the game that actually doesn't have anything to do with the game itself (real extended does still keep elements of normal crawl in it which is why it doesn't hold up there either).
Yes if you throw a caco against a fifty-eight greater demons it won't do much, thanks for your contribution.

If ya'll say so, in my experience killing 1 or 2 greater demon(s) or mummy(s) should be something I'm able to do with a melee build without too much help, greater servant/destruction additionally costs a not inconsiderate amount of investment in invo, something op will not have done previously since he was a Trogite and imho could be put to better use somewhere else.
Ofcourse you try to avoid fightning big groups at once, i often use scroll of fog to effectively split up big groups of enemies, if you do get into trouble in pan/tomb or the hells i find summoning a caco or two is rarely gonna get you out of it, tho i can see its use in beating the lords that guard the runes since you can easily summon a few in advance, but this is by no means neccessary. Also don't get me wrong you don't have to be playing axes to make Mahkleb awesome it just makes a good thing even better!

Greater servant of Mahkleb is probably pretty awesome in the midgame but op is talking about extended, and for extended summon greater servant/destruction for me at least would certainly not be my main reason to go Mahkleb, other gods offer similair abbilities, only Mahkleb and Tso give you free "vampirism", it's just a very nice extra topping on a delicious cake :)

I've had two hasted sun demons deal non-trivial damage to cerebov and I'm pretty sure cerebov qualifies as extended.

I don't like summons vs Cerebov specifically, I believe it increases chance to trigger Fire Storm (I can be wrong here but it is my experience with TSO). With 39-78 HP sun demons are really fragile despite their Hellfire immunity, I am not sure who would deal more damage - hasted Sun Demon (normal speed 12, melee damage 30) or berserking Iron Troll (normal speed 7, melee damage 35,25,25).

To be clear, my advice was (and would again be), "don't bother abandoning Trog." But if you do abandon Trog and go with Makhleb, then get like 10 invocations or whatever and use his abilities. Experience is glutted and cheap in late game and even more so in "extended."

I don't see why you advise keeping Trog for extended. Yes, it is possible to get 15 runes with Trog and it is far from the more difficult combinations for extended. However going with Trog is just inferior to switching to Makhleb. Healing on kills is the best support you can wish for in extended. On top of that leaving Trog enables you to use spells. Apportation and Control Teleport alone are a huge plus for any character who wants to tackle extended.

Besides I think Trog's wrath is overrated. If you're afraid of a few berserking stone giants / iron trolls you're probably not ready for extended anyways (for a former Trog character that is).

Trog's wrath includes paralysis but who cares about being paralyzed while in the middle of a fight anyway.
