How is one to deal with sickly sirens?

MDFi in a Sewer vault that has featured two malarious mermaids (disposed of) and now one sickly siren. She's sitting in deep water, mesmerizing me. All missiles have been thrown, blink and tele scrolls have failed...what am I supposed to do, just keep hitting 5 until I starve to death? Is there some trick?

WHOA just answered own question. Started drinking unidentified potions, one was a lev, she drew me towards her over deep water and I cut her down with one blow.

Moral of the story: if a woman has you ensorcelled, drinking will save you.

I hate that sewer vault. If you're not a caster, you might be completely hosed. And death by starvation while mesmerized is a particularly tedious way to go.

Assuming you don't have a lucky item like your potion of levitation, your only vague hope is that when the mesmerization breaks (which will happen occasionally on its own), you'll have the time to retreat one tile, and she'll follow you one tile before re-establishing her lockdown. If you can kill her in one hit, you can catch her before she retreats again.

There is an exit portal just before her room, though. If you've been spoiled, you can check your inventory to see if you can deal with her before you wake her up. If you can't, you can bail out and you're only out a few scrolls and potions.

I noticed the mesmerization stopping a couple of times but when I tried pressing 5 patiently in order to catch the opportunity the mesmerization appeared to be getting re-established immediately, i.e. I had no chance to take any action. Boy was that ever aggravating.

Funny thing was I had 5 lev potions.

Mesmerization can be resisted with high MR. And you can read a scroll of noise or fog to break the effect.

You always get four potions of levitation before you encounter the siren.

I checked in wizard mode twice… Once before posting before, and once just now to verify that I wasn't imagining things. No potions in the first treasure room. Wizard magic mapping didn't reveal any rooms I missed, and there were none generated elsewhere, either.

Does wizard mode block some normal guaranteed item spawns in some circumstances? I would have thought that would be the opposite of the intent, but it happened twice.

Explanation: the "M" in the top right corner of a room you'll visit before getting to the siren is always a stack of four potions of levitation. If they didn't appear (wizmode or not), it's a bug.

Those four automatic lev pots make the siren no longer an appalling crime but rather a gentle amusement.

I really like the flavour of the sewer levels with diseased merthings.
