Significance of stealth--

So I found a nice demon trident after completing orc:

   It has been specially enchanted to freeze those struck by it, causing extra
   injury to most foes and up to double damage against particularly susceptible
   opponents. It can also slow down cold-blooded creatures.


Is this a flat modifier after stealth training and dexterity? It appears to drop my stealth score by 80 down to very unstealthy. Is it worthwhile to try to train that away? Or should I just switch weapons when exploring?

Why do you want stealth, anyway? More importantly, stealth has no effect that I know of why simply autoexploring -- only if there are monsters in LOS or chasing you off LOS.

Yes, but not only that -- they have a N in STEALTH chance to notice you each (player) turn. See learndb 'stealth' for the details.

This is a good enough weapon that you almost certainly want to be using it. That it lowers stealth is a fairly minor price to pay. Unequipping this weapon to travel poses risks, in that it guarantees that you'll lose 5 AUT every time you encounter a monster and need to equip your weapon, and given your low stealth rating you were unlikely to avoid notice from most monsters anyway. If you decide to train stealth at some point it might become worthwhile to run around without this weapon equipped, but that doesn't seem like the best approach.

To answer my own question, stealth increases by 15 for every rank in stealth, so it would require around 6 stealth to overcome this penalty.

My reason for wanting stealth on this character is I like having the option to run away from enemies without waking them up. Or I can approach close enough to hit them with a spell before they can wake up.

I guess you're right that I would always lose 5 AUT if I ran around with another weapon equipped. I didn't really consider that before and I'm not sure how big of a deal it is.

You can easily win the game even without ever training stealth and without being able to walk away, so the significance of Stealth-- for a great weapon is completely nonexistent unless you are a stabber.

Here's the way I'd put it:

On many characters who aren't wearing very heavy armor, investing in some stealth is helpful. However, there are extremely few characters for whom stealth rating is going to take priority over a good weapon, and vulsuck the Spear-Bearer isn't one of them.

(Interestingly, all stabbers want stealth *skill*, but some of them don't really give a damn about stealth rating. This is because stealth skill boosts stabbing ability and damage (along with the weapon skill), and depending on what's available you can be an extremely effective stabber without being particularly stealthy, thanks to needles and hexes and evocables.)

My FeBe died early if I didn't train Stealth. I guess it is possible to run from Orc Wizards/Priests and Centaurs but what do you do with Killer Bees, avoid open terrain?

Duvessa and mikee are both better players than I am, but for what it's worth, I do think it's sometimes a good idea to train stealth on a character that isn't aiming for stabbing. It's cheap on almost all races, and even a modest amount can significantly increase the amount of leeway you get in dangerous situations. Most characters never end up in the Abyss, but a little stealth helps a lot in there in particular.

That said, I would rarely train Stealth before I have a decent offense and defense going, and I probably wouldn't train more than about 10 levels on a character that isn't planning to stab.

I agree with Lasty. Over the course of a game you can get quite a bit of benefit from a modest stealth investment on a character in light armor. Stealth is not high priority if you aren't relying mostly on stabbing and shouldn't be an experience dump except maybe (eventually) on FeBe. It also isn't so good that you should avoid heavy armor solely because of the stealth penalty; however, on dudes who aren't wearing very heavy armor anyway, I've found that it is helpful. I haven't ever regretted getting ~8 levels in stealth on non-stabbers in light armor, but I have sometimes regretted not getting stealth on such characters (e.g., shaft traps, bad teleports, rough enemy placement right by the stairs on a new level, and so on).

I did follow duvessa's advice until I was cast into the abyss, at which point I turned on stealth until it got to 9. This may not have been optimal, but it did make my stay there a bit less terrifying.

Seriously, the difference between abyss with low stealth and abyss with moderate to high stealth is huge. You can often avoid even being noticed by dangerous monsters.
