Of course this is doable, but we shouldn't forget the OP issue : he cannot win !
A VpEn can win with a -2, -2 cursed dagger an an amulet of inaccuracy, sure. People even win MuCK... But I think we shouldn't induce him that way

As you can see it took 27 turns to kill an orb of fire (with +5, +6 bardiche of antimagic + might + 26 Polearms + 25 Fighting).
So I would prefer to see fsim results (both for offense and defense), I suspect a single OoF is expected to win the fight vs +5 spear of freezing despite all those 271 HP.

I will just say I'd hope to get a better weapon than either by the time I was facing doing ZOT. I think the weapon I had on hand at the time ( the one you saw me equipped with) was a +5 +2 spear of protection which I am guessing is even worse than the freezing spear. And the +0, +6 Demon Trident was definitely better but I'd left it on another floor, so wasn't about to interrupt what I was doing at the moment (clearing Lair) to get it. All this to say a belated thanks for the advice. Until you mentioned it, I did not realize it was better than the spear because I assumed it was just like the other [race] weapons, only beneficial if you belonged to that race. (I believe I was a MiFi there too.) And I think it is probably true that Freeze isn't enough to justify a low stat weapon based on what I have read, but keep in mind that I have barely touched the spoilers for the game so I will probably run into many future problems identifying "best" weapons vs "mediocre" weapons.

Hopefully playing on trunk will help a little with that because at least there the numbers are a bit clearer.

It might take a while but it worked 4 out of 4 times (did nothing but activating berskerk and holding down tab):

Yes, this racial weapon confusion is understandable. You can check weapon stats in the game itself, just press "i" and then corresponding weapon letter: you will see that demon trident has good base damage and rather low attack delay.
When playing Trog I don't decide in advance if I would use a shield or not. It all depends on weapons and shields. If I obtain a good one-handed weapon early (or great shield like Shield of Resistance), I go with shield, otherwise I use two handed weapons. I think it would be better to use that halberd of anti-magic so don't neglect to switch to two-handed weapons if you don't have a good one-hander.
Basically I use fsim to decide when I should drop my shield but it can be considered spoiler indeed.

Yes, that my phrase was incorrect. Of course the best player would eventually win with the weapon. I meant that if every good player has only 1 chance (like SDC), I am not sure they would win. I don't think we should ask bart/elliptic/78291/etc. ;)
Also note that I am not a big fan of berserking in Zot, you can see why (I posted log of my latest game above where 2 more OoFs entered LoS while I was fighting a single OoF). And with Trog you don't have infinite source of hasting (I didn't have the wand in my last game).

Racial weapons were recently removed from trunk (demon weapons still exist but don't give a racial bonus), partly because the in-game descriptions implied a significant bonus -- when in fact the bonus was so small as to not really matter and just confused people into thinking they shouldn't/couldn't use the weapon unless they were the same race.

If you want to avoid spoilers/messing around with fsim, it is usually enough to just compare the base stats against your skill level. If you're close to mindelay on the harder-hitting weapon, it's probably worth switching. Brand and enchantment can make a difference, but mostly it is that simple.

I repeated tests without berserk with slightly better stats (273 HP and EV 24). Won with 43 HP once and 143 HP once. Much better than I expected so it should be doable.

Did you try reading its description? It has twice the base damage of a spear, and a good enchantment on top.

I totally wasn't expecting my entire army to be slaughtered but then again what isn't unexpected about entering unknown areas? Too hard? For me for sure. I probably should not have even entertained the notion of entering the vaults and just control-Qed my guy while I was still "ahead". Why didn't I retreat up the stairs when I ended up armyless? I didn't see any point in going on. Killed as many as I could before dying as I knew I would. Life sucks.

Well, getting to Vaults:5 is quite an achievement, especially considering that a few weeks ago you were "unable to proceed past the early game" :D

Two minor observations:
- You had 4 speed potions. When fighting a brutal enemy (like a titan), quaff one (next time).
- Why did you neglect the Swamp? It is much-much easier than Vaults:5.

Pure ignorance. I only knew that Swamp was difficult from reputation and that Vaults were nebulously difficult (ie: didn't realize how much harder they were). RE: Consumables, trying to be more aware of my options but it is tough to remember everything in the thick of it. If I had been thinking clearly I would have finished that titan off before I got pushed away by the bone dragon for instance. But I thought maybe if I could just duck around the pillar I could find a way to escape. No such luck :)

Note that the bottom floor (level 5) of any of those branches is significantly harder than levels 1-4. Vaults:5 is comparable to Zot difficulty (victory is close).

Tried a HoNe out of curiosity. I couldn't get a single orc to convert. I guess you need the buff armor and the mighty fighting skills or they just aren't impressed... :(

Once again hosed by random chance and I guess stupidity though honestly I don't think I had a lot of options. Doing the vaults because very little was left to do other than it, was planning to go back up instead of doing v5 but didn't even get to fully explore v4 before some random Ogre Mage sent me to the abyss and I got tagged ("you're it!") almost immediately (after finding the first portal) by a hoard of @#!!!s. (I don't see any other way to describe them accurately.) After a long protracted run in btwn which I used up my wand of healing and my applicable potions they finally finished me off. Super super frustrating. I don't think I can play this any more. There is no justification for making myself feel stupid, due to wasting time on a game that is unwinnable.

I am sure the experts will have lots to say on what could have been done but clearly I am not nor will I ever be an expert with this game.

Personally I don't find Beogh easy, maybe try Trog? At least he is very helpful with avoiding banishment.

I was doing great with Beogh. My orcs ruled the realms (though I admit vaults are a tad too hard for them individually.) The thing is, if I was playing Trog I'd have been dead 4 branches earlier. Yeah I TRIED to use a potion of speed but somehow it got blanked and amongst the 20 or so lines of text that spammed from one turn I never did find out why.

And I am sure I WILL play again despite my frustration but its gonna be bit before I can psyche myself up to it again. It seems like there are just some things that happen to me that do not happen to others and that is very demoralizing.

So before saying anything else, let's just acknowledge that if you're not having fun you should absolutely find something more enjoyable to do with your time. On the other hand, I remember spending a lot of time in a very frustrating plateau with this game. It was a matter of summoning the patience and perseverance to figure out the lessons that the game was trying to teach me, and which I for whatever reason was just totally not picking up on. I found it rewarding in the end, so in the hope that you will too, and even though I consider myself far from an expert, here's my advice based on that latest morgue:

First off, getting Abyssed is a risk you can minimize but never entirely avoid. It's not "unlucky" to get banished this far into the game, in fact it's something you should expect to happen once or twice and be prepared for, and by XL 18 you shouldn't have a terrible time escaping the Abyss. Just try not to fight stuff and uncover as many tiles as possible to increase the chances of generating an exit.

Meeting an Executioner on Abyss:2 might count as unlucky, but I'm wondering why you went to Abyss 2 in the first place. Exits generate more often on deeper levels, but those levels are also more difficult. I've never heard of anyone recommending Abyss-diving as a less-dangerous means of escape for an underprepared character, as opposed to just wandering Abyss:1. (If that actually is a good strategy, I'd like someone to correct me!)

That said, Executioners are not to be trifled with: they move extremely fast, they hit extremely fast (9 times/turn I think), you should get extremely far away as extremely fast as possible. And on that note...

Consumables: Use them or die, do not hoard, an empty inventory is better than being dead. You had 7 ?tele. Seven of them. I know it feels risky to teleport into unexplored territory, and often it is -- except as a last resort. In my eyes this was a last resort situation from the moment the Executioner came into LOS. !speed would not have let you outrun an Executioner, but might have helped you kill it, and would definitely have helped outrun almost anything else you might have found at the other end of a teleport. (Do you know that !speed has the same effect as Haste, as in speeding up all your actions? I didn't for a very long time and totally undervalued those potions because I thought they only speeded movement.)

Train Dodging. AC is great and all for soaking up damage when you get hit, but it is better to not be hit at all. 10 levels of dodging would have cost very little XP compared to the last couple levels of Fighting you trained (yes, even with Lava Orc's -2 dodging apt vs +2 fighting).

Trips to Abyss are unlucky IMHO, you should be prepared for them of course (always carry enough food/teleports etc.) but with careful play it is possible to avoid them, especially with many allies around.
Dodging is not that good with Dex 13 (don't increase Str with LO), wizard mode shows that 10 Dodging would increase EV from 10 to 14, 15 Dodging would make it 18, still not very good, 20 Dodging would make 21 (all checked in PDA with current Armour skill and attributes).

Edit: with Str 28 and Dex 19 it would be 17, 21 and 26 correspondingly.

For comparison, what did this character gain by raising Fighting from level 20 to 22? Negligible boosts to HP/accuracy/damage, I expect. In general it seems like you get a more noticeable return from raising a low stat by 40% than raising an already high stat by 4% (or whatever, I haven't crunched the exact numbers). [Edit]Agreed that it's better to raise Dex than Str, but[/edit] I'd go for the extra EV anyway.

Let me take these points 1 by 1.
1. I don't feel actually stupid. (Though after a rage out my brain does lose some capacity temporarily. But thanks for saying that.)
2. I am probably going to play again, just because I am more stubborn than smart. Family trait. Stupid horse though.
3. Keeping mind that I am not spoilered up (I haven't read every peice of lore there is to know on the abyss) I don't know what you mean by what was I doing on Abyss 2? I was sent there by the portal I found running away from the OTHER zillion or so badasses chasing me. Yep 1 was just as scary.
4. Honestly I figured a teleport scroll would take too much time to bother with when I was far from the monsters and ducking around a corner made sense at the time. As it turns out are LOs not so good with the scrolls when they are being chased. (Heat makes them unavailable.)
5. Executioners are damned fast. :( I would have loved to figure out a solution before I found this out. (All I knew was that sounds like a badass to get a way from so I did my (at the time best) and did not attempt to fight it on purpose.
6. the Skills breakdown was mostly me forgetting to turn it back on once I got the other skills where I wanted them, and forgetting to turn off fighting. Though to be honest your discussion of how the Fsim breaks down %s and such based on x and y skills went pretty much over my head and that is way too much math for a fun game. (IE not my style to know all that stuff. Surely there is a better way to know when skill breaks should happen? Or perhaps the Auto Skill selector could be slightly less stupid and stop raising a skill past optimal (at least as an option)?
7. Consumables in general are controversial. The tension between hoarding and overusing them (so that you don't have them when you need them most) is tough to discern even after tons of play throughs and deaths. I suspect it will take years (decades?eons?) before I thoroughly grok when is the best time to use xyz consumable. This level of spading is far from necessary. It's just something that happens on this forum, for the people who really love numbers.

Consumables in general are controversial. This mostly takes care of itself as you learn to take less damage and prevent dangerous situations - you will tend to have a sizable surplus of most consumables.

Elliptic recommends diving to abyss:5, I dive to abyss:3 and sometimes deeper, other players stay on abyss:1. There's no absolute consensus as far as I know.

I guess I should point out that in several past runs I did exactly the same thing more than once per run and escaped just fine. Only one time did I find an exit before a jump portal. None of the other times I escaped was I so sorely harassed and chased by the minions of the Abyss. The frustrating thing was that not only did trying to take the speed potion "bounce" (for lack of a better description) but the summon orcs ability of Beogh also failed without a message (that I could find through the morass of spam).

Which brings up a point which I think needs to be addressed in general in crawl. The output is a torrent of barely formatted information in a hard to read subwindow and if you Ctrl=p (which I often do when confused by stuff) it hardly improves. It would be nice if there were more break returns between entries/posts so it is easier to parse and also maybe more color coding for texts that are important so that they aren't all the hard to read red text on black. I realize that this sort of thing is very much window dressing for most players but for me it may mean the difference between failure and success.

I find it weird that elliptic (who is a developer also as far as I know) recommends to go deeper in Abyss for easier return. If you are banished while in Abyss 1, you are sent to Abyss 2 so the later is supposed to be worse.
I have limited experience with Abyss 5 (has been twice there) but based on that experience I will never go deeper than Abyss 3, at least voluntarily.

If Abyss 2 is not harder than Abyss 1 and a banisher banishes player from Abyss 1 to Abyss 2, then we should report a bug. Banishment in Abyss 1 is supposed to be bad as usual, not a tool to escape dangerous monsters AND increase chance to find a exit.

In my (quite limited) experience, abyss 2 has always seemed easier than abyss 1. In abyss 1, I get lots of demons, many of them faster than me. In abyss 2, I seem to get a lot of lair branch stuff (yaks, merfolk, stuff like that). But this is just my experience from the 3 or 4 times I've gone to abyss 2, so not really statistically relevant

They're the fastest dangerous monster in the game, IIRC, and they can haste themselves on top of that. If you have decent AC (30+), they aren't all that scary offensively, but you also had a weapon that was pretty bad against them: against rElec enemies, that scimitar effectively had no brand, and was effectively about as good as a +0/+0 great sword. Having another option for that fight would have helped a lot. In any case, running into Executioners in the Abyss is bad luck, since they really impair your ability to keep moving, and that's what you want to be doing.

Using autoskilling didn't lead you all that far astray, it looks like, and you certainly never need to use FSIM. The thing you do need to know is that higher skill levels cost significantly more than lower skill levels, so once a skill starts getting to high levels it's time to start considering whether more levels of another skill might help more. In this case, you easily could have gotten some EV for a small XP investment, and even upping your EV to 15 or so would have been a significant boost to your defenses.

Overall, what I'd emphasize is that most characters (definitely any wearing armour with encumbrance 15 or less) will want a mix of Armour and Dodging skill, and that these skills tend to be higher priority than high levels of Fighting skill.

About the Abyss in general, different players have strongly different feelings about how fun/well designed it is, and what it contributes to the game. If the Abyss is a deal-breaker for you, you may want to spoiler-up on that topic specifically to learn how to avoid being sent there. For what it's worth, I'm not always the most cautious player about avoiding the Abyss, and I still get sent there in less than 20% of my games where I encounter monsters that could banish me. I don't have the numbers on me, but it might be a lot less.

You can do a lot with your RC file: alter message color, set which messages cause a "more" break (which forces you to notice the event, because the game stops until you acknowledge it with space/Enter), change the thresholds for HP/MP warnings, etc. You can also streamline the game by changing default pickup settings to ignore items you never want, or pickup items you do, or eat chunks automatically when you get hungry while autotravelling, etc. I have a bunch of modifications to mine (mostly cribbed from others who have posted in previous threads) and I feel like they have improved my playing AND my ability to follow along. If you want to spectate me I can show you some of the settings in practice, I play on CAO (http://crawl.akrasiac.org:8080/#lobby) as tedric. Or you can just copy/paste my RC file (under the spoiler) and see what works for you.

About the ---more--- settings. In just about every roguelike that Ive played where that was the standard, it has annoyed the heck out of me. It isn't so much that it calls attention to itself but that it breaks the fluidity of the UI (hit a key, get a response.) I realize that sometimes the action gets heavy and a break is in order just to think through the potential options but the ---more--- break just has me hitting space bar sometimes far more than needed just to clear it. Especially when the things it is breaking for get really repetitive like your minions all taking a turn.

Thanks for the RC information. I will see what I can accomplish next time with some tinkering of that but I have to say I'd really like the things I requested be the default option or be easier to set in client rather than having to tweak an ini file.

Weird, yeah, I tried it on my own RC file and un-commenting "show_more = false" doesn't seem to block all --more-- messages. You might be able to do it if you comment out all of the defaults that are preset in sections below (add a # to the start of the line), but agreed, that's annoying and maybe buggy?

It worked in 0.13 but I tried it yesterday in 0.14 and it does not work indeed. I've tried looking into source code and it seems like we need to set "clear_messages=false" also. I cannot test it right now though.

Yeah from that code it certainly seems to be the case but in actuality that does not work. I still get ---more--- s in unexpected places. It may be this is hard coded the way it was in Vanilla Angband? (though there was an option in the = menu of that game to turn them off.)

Have read some of the thread; realy nice and helpful advices, being newbie too.

Found out that few points into the Stealth skill helps me early game and to avoid nasty encounters with unique monsters.
Also when you are in a bad situation dont rush, check again your inventory, spells, abilities (you may find that potion of might you forgot about that will save the day).

Currently playing a DdHu 16 with Sling as my main weapon skill and sb secondary. Found a treasure trove with a gda artifact and several weapon artifacts so I am in position to do better than I have before (also found: Boots of Running early on.) Ran out of ammo on Elven Halls 3 and decided to the better part of valor would be to flee and not come back. I was having real trouble with all the summons. my MR+++++ really helped tons to keep me alive but I still ended up draining multiple MP for my wands of Healing and Teleportation. I think EH 3 is just too hard at the moment but now I am not quite sure where I am going to go next (cleared Lair and Mines). Ended up going up to M2 to gather a huge assortment of stones since I ran out of fancy bullets. Spider, Swamp and Slime Pits are I think what is available in branches besides Depths and Vaults.

You are progressing greatly! :o :D Very glad to read your latest posts.

E:3 is incredibly awful and WILL kill you unless you're nigh unstoppable, use underhanded and very cautious tactics, or really know what you're doing... which usually boils down to making sure the other two conditions are actually met. So yeah, that was indeed the better part of valor.

Go for Spider and Swamp, ignoring the last level of them. Don't bother with the pits unless you have a full suit of artifact armor.

Sadly it seems unlikely I will progress further than I have so far. Between the killer lag on trunk and the ---more--- messages and my own impatience it is likely I am just going to run out of hp before I even know I am in danger. In addition as it turns out the three branches I am stuck with are spider (undoable right now due huge (more than 30 mobs) hordes of spiders near the stairs) Shoals (which is looking pretty hard past S1) and Slime(! not swamp). Consider removing that shield if you have problems fighting 30 mobs.

Worry not so much, had problems killing and getting attritioned a lot yes. And if every single step in that place is going to be a slag why bother?

I mean that is pretty great set of equipment (except for your weapon, which is awful, rings, which do nothing of note, and amulet, which does not work on DD). Well and your Str is kinda bad for that GDA but it's a +12 GDA so it's probably still worth using.
