What does the Alchemist Card do?

I keep pulling the Alchemist from my decks (with monsters present!) and Nemelex Xobeh keeps getting disappointed.

The Alchemist card converts gold to HP/MP. Lacking the former, or not lacking any of the latter would make the card ineffectual.

So it only works when you aren't healed? Eh. I wonder if the legendary card should be reworked to add 1 point per 100 GP consumed if drawn at maximum.

The "Nemelex is disappointed" message basically means "that card didn't do anything so you don't get any piety for it". If you're not on full health, then it'll convert some gold into hp (and might also convert some more gold into mp, depending on power level), and you then should gain piety for using the card.

The wiki is woefully out of date, and fairly often, the information contained within is wrong. I suggest you always, always double-check the information on http://crawl.akrasiac.org/learndb.html against the wiki when you look something up. Granted, the information isn't displayed in as familiar a fashion as the wiki is, in some cases you don't have as much information, and there's a lot of... Uh... Less than useful sections... But the information within is all correct and up to date. I'd suggest using Ctrl+F to search for the info you desire, or if you know the specific article you're looking for, add #articlename to the end of the address. Another useful resource is http://crawl.develz.org/info/ . Use this to search for monter stats. It'll also pull up the information from Henzell's LearnDB page if you type in the exact name of the article.
