need advice for mid-to-late-game DEFE

I have a DEFE and I am about to enter Depths level 5. I've done Crypt down through about level 3 when I stopped because it was seeming too risky. I've done Vault 1-4, Elf Halls 1&2, and Hall of Blades. I have the runes of Spider and Shoals. Other options I have for entering are Hell, Slime Pits (I don't have resist corrosion or mutation though), Tomb, Abyss, Pandemonium, and a Ziggurat. It's probably too late to make big changes in my stats and skills at this point but if you see any big deficiencies to warn me about fixing (if possible), could anyone let me know, as well as advice on what order to do the rest and if I should drop any of the spells I have and learn others (if they are available)? Thank you!

SPELLS:

I don't have haste, controlled blink, or controlled teleport -- no spellbooks with them. Thinking this will really screw me on these upcoming levels.

I do have: Fire Storm, Lehudib's Crystal Spear, Iskenderun's Battlesphere, Ignite Poison, Delayed Fireball, Deflect Missiles, Bolt of Fire, Poison Arrow, Poisonous Cloud, Flight, Orb of Destruction, and Swiftness.

I would get more Fighting (much more) and probably some melee weapon (demon anything with a good brand sounds nice). Shame you wasted your scrolls on that mace.

Edit: also you can press # in-game and look in your... think it was morgues subfolder in Crawl folder for a file called YourCharacterName-SomeNumbers.txt (if you had many similarly named characters, sort them by date) and paste the contents of that file in code tags.

Why not an enhancer staff?.. Yeah, staff of fire would be great. You could try ctrl+f for "staff". Anyway, an enhancer staff it one of the most desirable things for a mage, imo. And they are quite common or you can acquire one. I usually wield-ID all staffs just in case.

The answer to both of those suggestions is that I (maybe misguidedly) was trying to get my AC up, so I went for the mace of protection. I do have an enhancer staff -- think the advantage would make up for the loss of AC?

27 AC is a good amount of AC and enhancers are good. You can also whack stuff with it, that will deal a lot of fire damage (train a bit of Staves if you want to whack stuff faster, but no more that 12, and maybe a little bit of Evocations, especially if you have items like lamp of fire, fan of gales, phial of floods).
Kind of weird you have only 21 EV with 16 Dex and 18 Dodging, though. I guess with only 6 Str even MDA is taking its toll.

Edit: read your dump. I think I'd wear MR ring over the Hunger- one, also use that enchant armour scroll on helmet or boots.
Another edit: you also probably will never need most of the rings you carry.

If you were banished by a spell, yes. If you were hit by a distortion weapon, or unwielded one, or miscasted a Translocation spell, no.

I think that will increase chances for generating a gate leaving the abyss, but it will also make it much more dangerous... If you are doing okay on Abyss 1 I would just keep moving until you find the exit gate

Well, it's over. I managed to find a portal out of the abyss but it put me right back where I went in and a lorocyproca that wouldn't die killed me. Now that I think of it I had a teleport scroll, goddamn it.

Yeah, when you get banished into the abyss, finding a gate out always puts you right back into the same place as you left, often with the same monster who banished you still standing there, waiting for round two.

AC is nice on (anybody), but with a DEFE, you should only need it as an absolute last line of emergency defense. Monsters shouldn't be getting into melee range with you, simply put. In this respect, a staff of fire/power/whatever is infinitely more useful to you than a weapon of protection.

AC is great and meleeing with a DEFE is not out of question, but a mace of protection is a really poor use for your weapon slot after really early floors, maybe. Also staff of power is not a very useful item most of the time, IMO.

AC really helps even for monsters that do not need to get into melee range with you to do damage. I agree that on this character, having 27 AC is already a very solid amount and a weapon that can actually be used offensively, to good effect, would be better, including staff of fire. However I'd probably take that mace of protection over a staff of power in this situation, to be honest; though I'd probably take just a plain scimitar over either. Staff of Fire would have been ideal though, yeah.

You could wear both, provided the ring of fire doesn't put you into rC-, which would be dangerous to have on, even just sometimes, due to deep elf's low HP.

However, a big part of the point of the staff would be to hit things with it, you can do great fire damage with it without expending MP, and (not that it matters that much, but) Deep Elves actually have good aptitudes in staves. They are also pretty good in long blades if you want a way to diversify the types of damage you can do, and long blades have great low-investment options that are widely available by mid-game.

(The problem you sometimes hit with long blades is if you are starting with one as your melee option on a gladiator or whatever, because upgrades are somewhat rarer than M&F; however, if you are branching out into them later on, that's not a problem at all.)

I think if you have a staff of fire, you don't need anything else(and Iron Shot or maybe a lajatang(?) for resistant stuff) . It also increases your fire spells damage a lot. I also believe that if you play a FE, especially DE, you should use all available enhancers(up to 3) as it will allow you to maximize you spell damage early on and one-shot stuff before it even can do anything. It also allows you to stop training your magic as soon as spells are castable and to move on to training your defences, while your spells are still quite deadly.
