Orc priests

I've encounter many terrible monsters on D:1 like giant frogs and halberd gnolls. But is it possible to orc priest to spawn on D:1 if one's turncount is below 700 or 1000 or whatever it is to trigger ood timer? Never seen one to this day but that wouldn't be fair in any way. Please tell me it is not POSSIBLE.

Re: Orc priests

I once met an orc wizard as my first enemy so I'm guessing the chance exists.
Trog was very happy with me that day.

if one's turncount is below 700 or 1000 or whatever it is to trigger ood timer?

i'm pretty sure the "ood timer" doesn't work that way

Re: Orc priests

Well the chance that orc priest can appear on D:1 should be removed. If there is any.
for crate: i have absolutely no knowledge when ood spawn starts to be likely to trigger. Just wanted to know if it is possible for that kinda of a one-shotter to appear on the first level regardless of the turncount.

I dunno, maybe. To put things in perspective, though, I'd wager that weapon of electrocution or distortion spawn on D1 being picked up by the first kobold / (hob)goblin is more common, and I would definitely feel that those situations are more unfair and more annoying than an orc priest would be.

You are warned when something has a possibly branded weapon, seems good to me.

Re: Orc priests

My understanding is the "ood timer" "triggers" on turn 0. Chance just goes up as more time passes.

edit: well there is another thing that it does, which is generate super-out-of-depth monsters, and I have no idea how that one works. But orc priest is not in that group.

Re: Orc priests

it warns you about branded weapons *now*, i remember a character of mine ending something like this:

a goblin comes into view. it is wielding a glowing dagger.

*it's probably just a cursed dagger right?*

the goblin hits you!
you feel drained!
you die...

on my 0xp fresh character.

Oh yeah, I don't think it is a problem, I'd just say that those situations are way more common and arguably worse than (or about as bad as) some of the other spawns being complained about.

  Code:
43 sanka the Stinger (level 2, 0/11 HPs)

I hate centaurs much more than orc priests, because 1. they are faster than you 2. they shoot every turn while orc priests tend not to overuse smite.

In this game I used autoexplore, which seems to be stupid on D1 if you want to win.

Re: Orc priests

Just asked if someone knew if it is possible them to spawn. When playing a low HP race that is kind of an issue.
I already know not to engage against monsters with glowing weapons on D:1 but i never seeked advice for that. Pretty sure those things kill many unwary players.
Maybe I'm just worrying too much.. :) and by the way the morgues you guys sent here.. both of you had over 1000 turns spent on D:1

Yeah but the thing is: If you heal up let's say 3 times on D:1 and use auto-explore you get a turncount like that (dependent on how AE chooses to approach the level). Thus, if a player heals up after every fight and wants to explore every level he can easily encounter an orc band on D:1...

I saw a horde of Orcs on D:1 before. It may have been a vault.

Tedronai: I do know that and never asked advice for that situation. Just read my first post.
Early out-of-depth monsters are terrifying, yes. But what can you do if you see an orc priest as a, let's say XL1 spriggan wizard? On D:1. If it smites (and it most likely will), it's an instadeath.

What you can do as a spriggan, is as soon as you see the priest, turn and run away. Your natural stealth very likely allows you to go unnoticed, and your natural speed lets you get away before he can act, most of the time. If you were holding down a movement key and he gets a 'free' shot at you, it was not crawl's fault...

Orc priests are bad news when you have less than 17hp - but I wouldn't call them an instadeath.

Re: Orc priests

Anyway it's rare enough to not really matter, especially considering little investment you've got in your character in dungeon one. (unless you find golden dragon armor with ogre or similar kind of goodies, but you know what they say easy come easy go.)
