You're gonna die soon

So I see this mentioned on the boards a few times - is this actually a thing? I.e. if you pick up a ridiculous golden dragon armour on d4 you'll die to horrible dice rolls soon after, or similarly if you pick up a -10 cursed great mace, you'll have an easy time of it?

Or is it the usual people reading patterns in randomness - get a bit of good luck, the a bit of bad luck and think it's designed...

I think it's one of them "jokes".

If there is something to it, it's probably overconfidence that gets people killed.

Unrelated, but I remember reading that IVAN roguelike actually scales enemies to strength of your equipment. That game prides itself in being unfair, though.

I presumed it was a joke, but then kept reading people saying it and started to wonder...

Believe it or not, you are actually less likely to die when you find good items! Since, after all, good items make your character stronger.

Most characters die. Almost all of them. Therefore if you predict that "character XY will die soon", you are almost always right.

  Code:
Book of Maledictions

This spellbook teaches Enchanters how to weaken and confound their enemies before finishing them off. The frontispiece contains a depiction of an evil eye, an ancient cursed symbol; this has occasioned numerous tales of adventurers who met bad ends after carrying this book into the dungeon. Though, as skeptics point out, pretty much everybody who enters the dungeon meets a bad end.

generally a good find on d1 means sigmund on d2, true story. and grinder on d3. oh, and ijyb will probably spawn with a wand of draining if it was really good.

Re: You're gonna die soon

I do think there's something to the good-items-mean-death-by-hubris theorem. If you find enough good equipment, it's easy to start feeling invincible, and if you do, sooner or later you'll run into something challenging and, due to feeling invincible, not take action to handle it soon enough.

Feeling invincible kills about 60% of my characters. Inattentiveness kills another 35%.

Welcome to the Lair of Beasts!

Found a faintly humming robe.

Fannar shouts! Erica shouts! Gastronok's eye-stalks swivel in your direction.

Finding your prefered god's altar on D:1 or D:2 pretty much ensures you will die on D:3 as well, unless its Trog. Trog is just an easy lay and leaves his altars right at the entrance whenever he can.

Re: You're gonna die soon

Nonsense, those GDAs just were not ridiculous enough.

  Code:
 r - the +10 gold dragon armour of Agnosticism (worn) {rElec rPois rF+ rC+ Dam+6}
(You found it on level 4 of the Dungeon)

It affects your damage-dealing abilities (+6).
   It protects you from fire.
   It protects you from cold.
   It insulates you from electricity.
   It protects you from poison.
