Is it too late to switch things up?

I recently got my first win with a GrBe. So naturally, I start trying out a bunch of other combinations, and make mincemeat of them all, usually well before finishing Mines. It's great because I'm learning, but the frustration settles in and I roll up another GrBe. Once again, things are rolling smoothly. So here I am right after clearing out Orc, checking out my stash, and realize I have the makings to really change up the gameplay. I'm basically wondering where the line in the sand is to go against a particular build. Here's my full morgue:

A decent set of EW scrolls, I'm too invested in maces/flails to use it on anything else, not really sure why I haven't yet. Crushing or Antimagic?

What I consider to be a ton of EA scrolls, I'm basically holding out for GDA, but wondering if I might as well blow 'em on the FDA I've already got.

But look at that stack of books!! If I could get Earth magic and/or Necromancy online, that would add a ton of utility to an already strong build. Am I looking at a potential 15 runer? If this is something I want to pursue, when is a good time to ditch Trog? Which God should I switch to? Are there enough skill points in this particular game to get some good spells online?

Holding out for GDA is bad for a few reasons. Assuming you can cancel out the rC-, FDA is very good (otherwise recommend finding any branded plate and enchanting that).

I don't recommend ever abandoning Trog, partly because he is insanely powerful, and partly because his wrath is one of the most dangerous things in the game.

I would remove that FDA immediately and would wear some plain +0 plate armour instead. rC- can kill the character.

Edit. Stop training M&F, dire flail is at min delay and you need defense more even without those rings of slaying.

Why are you wearing the +0 MR cloak when you have a +2 preservation cloak in your stash? For many characters this might be a choice but you already have on some +MR equipment and any time you run into a situation that requires more MR you can just ab.

And you have 4 identify scrolls and an unindentified randart ring. While unlikely, it could be better than what you have on.

Also wear +0 helmet over +1 hat, the former can give extra AC depending on Armour skill.
+4 leather armour with rC++, stealth++ and damage +5 is a fun option, especially with your high Dodging.

I was wearing the MR cloak because I had just cleared Orc and was stacking MR, switching that out now.

I do have quite a few rings of rC, I was planning on carrying them around and throwing them on when appropriate, but if Plate is better, maybe that's where I should be sinking the EA scrolls.

M&F is going to 20 because I have quite a few nice great maces to choose from.

That Randart ring turned out being the ring "Voad" {rF+ Str+3 Acc+3 Sinv} hmmm, maybe I don't need that FDA

Is it possible at this point? I already feel like I'm spreading myself by dropping points into stealth, though it's paid off thus far.

Any general advice would be appreciated, I feel like I should have posted this in YASD as a CiP but really my intention was to find out how possible it is to switch builds mid game. I think I'm past that point.

In practise, the worst I've gotten was 4 berserking stone giants and two other lesser monsters. I'm pretty sure I don't have to point out how dangerous 4 berserking stone giants are.

You continue getting skill exp after you hit level cap, but it is still a bad idea to leave Trog, as others have pointed out. Well, it is a bad idea assuming that you are mostly going for a win on this character. The reasons for why that is a bad decision don't have much to do with how late in the game you are, though. Trog wrath is very rough, for one thing, but also, your character needs more dodging and fighting and armor. Taking a break from raising those skills, which are critical for your character now and in the immediate future, in order to try to eventually get some spells up and running on a 9-int gargoyle with no prior experience in magic-related stuff, precisely during the period when Trog can paradrop angry fast iron trolls and giants on you, makes it a very bad idea.

I'd definitely turn off stealth training. Technically it is best to train one skill at a time, but if you don't want to fiddle much with the skill screen it is probably fine in your case if you just leave fighting, armor, and dodging all on. Later on, you can get more evocations too if you want, once those other skills are closer to ~20.

As for the general question about "switching builds"... I use the word "build" myself too, in reference to Crawl, but really just as a short-hand to refer to "all the crap my character has." You don't really "switch builds" in Crawl, you just start training something different and try to use that in addition to your other stuff. If, when, and how to branch out into something new cannot be answered very meaningfully outside of specific cases, it really depends on the situation.

I can say, though, that in general you definitely want to be very good at a few useful things (at least one of them directly related to killing enemies) before you start becoming okay at other things. So, barring some very weird and exceptional luck with item drops, etc., your chosen background gives you a starting point and a more or less clear initial direction that you follow until your initial offensive and defensive abilities are adequate, at which point you can opt either to continue along similar lines or diversify. Other vague advice: Be aware of opportunity costs and even when you diversify, stay focused and clear on your goals—prioritize, and attain the things you want sequentially starting at highest priority. Never train for something you "might get later" (because you might *not* get it later). Also, it is very rarely worth it to train a skill if the only meaningful benefit of it is a long way off. (Of course, if you are getting other benefits along the way, it is totally fine if there is also some long term goal or plan in mind.)

I appreciate all the advice, guys! I've stayed the course and given up on giving Trog up, and am pretty much right to the point where my first win was. Cleaned shop in Vaults, Shoals and Snake, popped into Hell to grab the horn for access to the trove, had some very close calls in Zot1, where I learned how damn handy my evokable items can be. I'm now just running my stash to Hell, and am working on balancing my resistances.

I've only ever gotten this far once. Any advice on how to proceed, what equipment to swap out would be awesome. Especially regarding jewelery, is 60AC worth losing a decent damage bonus? Also worth mentioning, I've got other great maces I could dump my scrolls into with draining, distortion and electricity, if any of those are better than flaming.

Do you have an antimagic great mace? That would be worth putting any number of scrolls into. Holy wrath would be useful too (and is often found from ettins etc), but less important.

Slaying and Robustness would be my default rings, but carry {rF rC} and rN. Wear rN in crypt, and maybe Elf.

I'd do Elf and Slime next, in any order (Slime only if you have another body armour - getting to rC for azure jellies would help a lot). You might as well use your enchant armour scrolls on the gauntlets, though I suppose you have enough that you might try on gold armour/hide? Or you might find a CPA.

I have both antimagic and Holy wrath great maces that could be upgraded close to the point the flaming one is. I do have some Ice Dragon armor I could enchant, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for some GDA or CPA. Also, if there's anything I'm forgetting to ctrl+f for.

Antimagic is the best brand for Zot:5 since it helps significantly with the largest threats, OoF and ancient lichs.

Forgot about electric golems. I thought about including draconians but since it's sometimes better to hit them with a cold branded weapon if you have one, I'm not sure which would be the "optimal" strategy. I guess the same could be said with holy brand + antimagic on ancient lich. Probably optimal is to hit them 1-2 times with anti-magic then switch to the damaging brand and hit them 4 or so times. If they're not dead yet, repeat.

It depends on weapon I think. With short blades it is safer to hit them by anti-magic brand, with executioner's axe they die in 2-3 hits to holy.

I'd say Anti-magic > holy wrath against ancient lich, at least for a nice big weapon. Not sure how those brands compare on qbs or whatever.

Except for the areas in which anti-magic is nearly useless (Lair, Hall of Blades, Swamp, Spider, and Slime), it ranges from good to extremely good. In Zot it is extremely good. I also found it to be better than holy wrath for Pan and the Hells for more than one berserker I've run who had access to both.

Anti-magic works with any weapon, it is based on damage. Dealing 10 damage twice is the same as dealing 20 damage once.

I prefer antimagic over holy for a.liches, suppressing their casting is a much bigger deal than the (quite significant) damage enhancement imo.
